Default Should the NFL have a Minor League?

Should the NFL have a minor leagues, a la MLB and NHL? I've been thinking, and I say yes. This league could either play on a weekday during the season, or, which I'd prefer, a 6-8 game season (with playoffs) during Spring. It'd be very similar to NFL Europe except it'd be primarily in America (maybe some team like the Bills will have theirs in Canada), and each team has one minor league affiliate and all players on that team are under that teams control. I know it's a longshot, but I think it would be a real good idea. It would practically extend the length of the football season, and help develop the younger but less talented players in the league or looking for work.

Thoughts?

I don't think it is a bad idea, but one minor league affiliate for each team is too much IMO. Maybe have two teams combine with one affiliate, that way you have less teams and have just players that have a good shot at making their pro team.

Bring back something like Europa for the development of players, but a minor league isn't the best idea. Football is so high impact and careers are so short we'll see a lot of talent wash out too early.

If they did do this (and it's not a bad idea), it should have 8 teams, 1 conference, and 7 weeks (each teams plays each other once). You could then have a 4 team playoff, or just the top two teams play for some random championship. The idea of having a 32 team league is totally unrealistic, both in terms of interest and talent.

I also think they would have to find some unique markets that would actually appreciate a league like that. Hmm...lemme think....

1) Las Vegas (AFC West)
2) Norfolk, VA (AFC South)
3) Birmingham, AL (NFC South
4) Albany, NY (NFC East)
5) Honolulu (NFC West)
6) Providence (AFC East)
7) Akron (AFC North)
8) Omaha (NFC North)

Yeah, that'd do it.

I'm submitting this to the NFL in 5..4..3..2..1..

That would be good, but I would use Portland or San Antonio as opposed to Honolulu to cut down on travel costs.

Now that is a plan. Something like each NFL team has something like 12 plays on their conference minor league team, making 48 player rosters.

Good idea aside from Omaha. They will get nothing and like it. God, I hate Omaha.
In reality though Omaha makes the most sense because football is huge there.

Yep, Europe proved so successful before. Those damn Euro's need to get their head out of the gutter and convert to real football. * waits for enlightened comment about how the rest of the world plays the other " football"*. Guess what, America is better and so is Football Norteamericano. :)

I love football but there's something about the whole world losing it's mind about the World Cup that makes it a must watch for me.

Its called College? You could send more talent up North, but with the rule differences I doubt it helps gauge talent much for an NFL level.

If they don't create a minor league of some sort they should really take more advantage of the CFL and try to set something up with them. There is some good talent in the CFL.

If every team submitted their practice squads for this type of thing, they'd practically have the entire rosters filled automatically. It's be great for players coming off injury to be able to get accustomed to the feel of the game again (ala players in the MLB coming off the DL playing in minor league games before coming up).

Rule differences make it tough. 3 downs, wide ass, longer field, 12 players, deep endzones, etc.

Meh, I'm not a fan really of the idea.

I think it should stick as the NFL. Players have a chance with Arena Football and NFL Europe to show off there skills if not on an NFL team.

I think this would be different. For one, NFL Europe wasn't based where the NFL's biggest fanbases are: the United States. Also, the Arena League and XFL were gimmicks, and I don't think many football fans really enjoyed it - especially over traditional football.

A NFL-affiliated minor league would be embraced by the fanbase, in my opinion. I mean, spectators go to training camps for teams, so why not actual games? It'd probably have the same level of attendance as pre-season games, but maybe slightly less. The NFL is the best marketer of the major sports, though.

That's what the practice squad is for. Each team is allowed 8 players for their practice squad which is more than enough. There's no need to have a minor league. How many practice squad players ever turn into something in the NFL? Not many. The majority never even make the active roster.

The NFL wouldn't make money from a league like that and it's not worth it to develop players because the few that might have a chance to make an NFL roster would already be on a practice squad.

Blame Canada for the Minor Leage failures in the US and Europe. You could actually do it in this case too...shii...
The CFL is still going because its not the minor leagues. Its Canada's pros.
