Default Could the Lions make a play for Julius Peppers? - MLive

http://blog.mlive.com/twominutedrill...a_play_fo.html

Quote:
If that happens, another team could sign Peppers, but only if it surrendered a pair of first-round draft choices. The Lions possess the Nos. 1 and 20 picks overall and could sign Peppers -- a sure thing -- and hand over its two picks to the Panthers for two not-so-sure things.
If we did something that dumb.... wow. #1 and #20 for Peppers? That'd be utterly ridiculous.

Man I hate MLive, it is the most absurd site that tries to pretend that they have inside knowledge.

I'm all for making a play for Peppers or Haynesworth. But not for something like that.

jason taylor was for a 2nd and a 6th the year after. peppers' value could be our 20th pick but we'd hold all the bargaining power. maybe our 2nd round pick could be up for grabs, but i still don't like any trade scenario. we're rebuilding. we're going to have a new coach, new quarterback, and we don't need to compound the amount of things that could go wrong by big spending on free agents. especially since i don't even know how good of a fit he'd be here. i'd steal javon kearse or sign haynesworth to a ridiculous contract before i'd sign peppers.

It'd only be a factor if we moved to a 3-4 as he says he wants to be part of one.

This is beyond stupid. You don't trade two franchise building blocks for an impending free agent defensive end who turned 29 years old today.

It would be much easier to just arrange a trade with Carolina, going so far as to include the 20th overall pick if you want, although I sure as heck wouldn't.

id give up the 20th pick. especially since Spikes and Hardy is not entering. But not the 1st overall. If we agree to run a hyprid type defense using Peppers like Baltimore uses suggs and Dallas uses Ware.

1a. Stafford
1b. trade (peppers)
2. either CB or and OG
3a. Brace
3b. CB OG (which ever we dont take at 2.

Give us a solid Dline for a 3-4 with Brace redding and White/fluellen/IAF (if he isnt a complete bust)

Two very good OLBs with Peppers and Avril.

The only issue is MLB and whether SIms fits in anywhere.

I don't want Peppers or pretty much any of the big name free agents.

No one is gonna be motivated to play for the Lions. They'd only be coming here for the money.

The Lions free agency focus ought to be finding an Offensive Guard, a Wide Receiver, and some solid backup LB's and DB's.

Nothing flashy.

#1 and #20 is an absurd demand. Peppers is one of the top 3 players at his position easily, but thats a hell of a lot to ask of a freshly 0-16 team.

I'd ship 'em #20 and our early 3rd and 5th for him. That'd be great for everyone involved, especially if the panthers are going to lose him regardless.

I would never make that deal. Peppers isn't gonna be motivated to play for a losing team. If he isn't happy in Carolina where they actually contend, he will be miserable here.

Not to mention that Peppers is close to 30 and he'll start declining before the Lions ever are ready to make a playoff run. If the Lions were just a few players away from the playoffs, then yeah, you consider it. But we need 5-6 new starters on defense to even have a prayer defensively.

Peppers is 29 years old. We cannot afford to sign him by giving up picks. That would be ridiculous.
We aren't going to be competitive for at least 3 years when Peppers will be considering retirement, what would be the point? All it would do is remove some really good young players from our roster who in 3 years might have become contributing starters, completely limiting our future growth.
It would solve nothing except maybe we win 2 or 3 more games for 2 seasons but still fail to make the playoffs, then just as Stafford is reaching his potential, Peppers retires and now we have to replace the 3 prospects we traded to get Peppers thus leaving us way short of being a contending team. We need to keep all our picks and pray that Mayhew is a decent drafter, that is how you rebuild a franchise, then in 3 years we use our cap money to sign good FA's to fill around our nucleus which has a real shot at making us a contending team. Signing expensive FA's before we have built a young nucleus will just led to a lot more of the same kind of losing we have become accustomed to.

Yes, but you wouldn't hate us bringing in Haynesworth, especially now that we got his former coach.

Tell me, why would Haynesworth come to Detroit? He is nearing the end of the line and likely looking for a situation that would possibly give him a ring. Are we going to get him a ring before he retires in a year or 2, I don't think so.
There is a reason why he might sign with Detroit, yes, MONEY. He's nearing retirement and if he doesn't care to try for a ring any longer but wants a big cheque to retire on. Will he put out for a loser like he did for Tennessee or is he likely to be looking for a soft job where he doesn't have to kill his body anymore than he has to. Is this the type of FA who is likely to play hard for Detroit? Again, I don't think so.
We won't look attractive to FA's who want to be on a winning team until we show the league that we are on the rise with a bright future. Maybe year 3 of our rebuilding process. At that point it is worthwhile to sign big name FA's but this year it would be a complete waste of money IMO.
I would actually hate the signing because it would be a strong indicator that Mayhew doesn't know how to build a winner and is looking for splash rather than doing it the right way to produce a SB contender.

The bottom line is that I don't think Haynesworth would come here so it's a moot point. Other than the fact we have Jim Schwartz, there is nothing to indicate he'd wanna come here.

I would figure he'd stay in Tennessee before he came here.

Unless Schwartz can motivate him. However, I tend to agree with you on this. Did anybody talk about Haynesworth being dominant before his contract years. He was dominant in 07 in a contract year and dominant in 08 in a franchise year. However, they did add some talent around him like VandenBosch,Kearse,Thornton,Harper,Griffin etc and then Albert could be recognized so who knows. But 2002-2006, no real mention of Albert being a dominant DT. Of course he gets a pass as a rookie in 02. He was always good but game changing tons of money worthy dominant only came about in contract years.

I agree, but if it turned out we did have a chance I think we would be crazy not to throw a lucrative deal his way to help our efforts.
