Default Do you want Bodden back?

One of the biggest decision Mayhew has to make is whether or not to keep Leigh Bodden. Yes he had a down year like all other Lions, but he's a decent corner. Not a shut down corner but a decent corner who like all decent players needs other players around him to show an impact. This team needs any talent we can get.

The question is should we keep or cut him.
My vote is to keep him

1) He has an 8.6 million dollar roster bonus due.
2) His cap number without the bonus is 3.6 million. So 12.2 million for 2009
3) His 2010 cap number is 3.8 million, 2011 4.6 million, 2012 3.7 million and 2013 would be 4.7 million, basically all in salaries with only 333K in signing bonus. So basically fairly low, relative to a free agent like Dunta Robinson we would pick up.
4) We defintiely can absorb what would be his 12.2 million cap number this offseason as not many big name free agents will be coming to Detroit. For instance getting rid of Daunte gives us 5 million on top of the 26 million room we already have.

Yes Boddens cap number will stink this year, but if deemed a decent player by Mayhew/Schwartz, he might be worth keeping around because after this year he is pretty good financially for us as opposed to a high priced free agent with a huge signing bonus.

I say keep him also, he is one of the better players you have. I may be a packers fan, but I dont want the Lions to go 0-16 again.
Here is the Lions to do list :
1) Get a good OC
2) Franchise QB for Calvin Johnson
3) Start Jordan Dizon
4) Draft a Dlineman.

he had over 70 tackles which i don't see a single other cornerback with over 30.

As much as I'd like to see Asomugha in blue, I doubt that will happen. Bodden is the best we have at the moment, and letting him go would create an even bigger hole in our weak secondary. With that being said, we definitely need to find a capable CB for the other side through draft or FA.

aso is the one guy who i wouldn't care what it took. i'd do the whole 2 draft picks to sign him ''mlive peppers deal''. but that would never happen.

How about this? Trade up with the Saints from pick #20 to pick #14 and give us Leigh Bodden in return.

That won't work I don't think. We will have already paid the 8.6 million roster bonus so that number will be on our cap no matter what then I do believe. The trade would have to be made in February and not on draft day and who knows who will be there at pick 14. Just adds another hole to our team for minimal gain of 6 spots.

Side Question!?! Why is it when people come to Detroit they lose the ability to stay healthy? They are the anti-Phoenix.(NBA)

I lean towards keeping him for one reason:

As i understand it, Bodden's base salary and the amount that counts against the cap after the upcoming season is pretty low. If we just bite the bullet and pay his 8.6 million dollar bonus now while we have the cap space to do so, then we'll be saving money on a starting caliber CB down the line.

Now if the Lions could somehow sign a starting caliber CB and then draft a CB in the first 3 rounds, I'd cut him. But I don't see how we could sign a starting caliber CB. No one wants to come here.

Yes you are correct in your reasoning. Boddens cap number will be between 3.5 to 4.5 million every year for 4 years after this 2009 season so relativley low. Not dirt cheap but not terrible and easily cuttable if he really stinks because its all salary and no signing bonus. Brining in a starting corner like Dunta to an 0-16 team, will most likely come with a giant signing bonus with an escalating salary. If Bodden and Dunta are deemed equal, Bodden is the smarter choice. And Nnamdi is out of the question. I don't know why he would come here besides truck load of money. He'd be worth it but I just don't see it happening.

Well I don't think that anyone loved Joran Diizon when he was picked but we got use to it.We could start him at LOLB

We can also take a look at the Colts CB, Nick Harper is it?

The Lions have made the mistake of cutting and trading too many good/solid players for the wrong reasons way too many times. Johnnie Morton? Jeff Hartings? Dre' Bly? Shaun Rogers? Etc . . .

Kelvin Hayden is the Colts guy. Or Greer from Buffalo wouldn't be a bad idea either. Along with a 2nd or more likely 3rd round corner. Just so Fisher does not play another down for us. And Kelly is already gone.

Yes we've cut too many good players. Bodden had a down year with no talent around him. But he can be a solid corner. At the very least a very solid number 2 corner if we can develop a drafted corner or sign a free agent. At 3.5 million a year in 2010 I can accept that. Take the 12.2 million hit and get some talent around him. Also get a safety who can help out in coverage because Bullocks, Pearson(special teams) and Dwight Smith(cut) can not. Hopefully Alexander can recover from that injury and develop.

Kelvin Hayden is the Indy CB. Harper is on the Titans?

You hit the nail on the head. The Lions do make that mistake too often. Especially in cases of Bly where we got basically nothing in return. Harrington possibly could have been successful if guys like Hartings and Morton had been retained.(lol)

Ah yes, Hayden is the Indy guy I was thinking of.

Lions need a CB with some Punt Return abilities too.

There are some CB's in rounds 2 and 3 that I like. If we don't cut Bodden, I'd definitely draft one in the middle rounds.

I think this is exactly why we need to find Rogers' replacement at DT as well. The Lions put no pressure on opposing QB's this year which directly impacts the secondary's ability to make plays. This is why I'd love to see Haynesworth in honalulu blue next season.

i've heard raji and pat williams comparisons several different places-mostly espn this week. i wouldn't mind building our own vikings williams wall starting with raji. the line needs that NT and another 1st and 2nd down DE. i just don't want a salary situation where cj, smith, sims are staring at free agency in a couple years and we have bad contracts or can't grab the right players in the future because we spent all our money now.

Wouldn't the roster bonus be pro-rated over the rest of his contract, like a signing bonus? I think the thing was written in such a way as we'd basically be signing him to a new contract or not, with this roster bonus.

For a team that won't be competitive for 3 years, why tie up all that money in him. Find a cheaper solution for a smaller time frame. We need to learn how solid franchises use their cap dollars wisely.
We will stink next year with or without him anyways and unless the HC thinks he can be a star in this league for the next 4 years why pay him star money?

Nope roster bonuses are not like signing bonus. One time deal. He has a very small signing bonus prorated over the rest of his contract. 333,000 a year. Actually its a pretty smart contract since we have so much cap space.

2009 is the only year we will be tying up all sorts of money in him. And since we won't be signing any big name free agents most likely, Bodden should be kept because this team needs all the talent we can get, this year and the next 3 years. The other 4 years he won't be paid like a superstar, he'll be paid by what he is a decent starter for 3.5-4.5 million a year with no big signing bonus and easily cuttable saving 3.5-4.5 million if he continues to play poorly. Its only smart to keep him.
