Simeon Rice: Jon Gruden is 'a scumbag'
Posted: January 28, 2009
Sporting News staff reports
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Simeon Rice called Jon Gruden "a scumbag" in a Tuesday interview with Sirius NFL Radio.
Rice, a 34-year-old free agent, had a lot to say to "Movin' The Chains" radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan.
The following quotes are courtesy of ProFootballTalk.com editor and Sporting News contributor Mike Florio.
"You look at what he did when Chris [Simms] damn near died on the field; he wanted to release him right when he got injured. I get hurt, my shoulder's torn off the bone. This dude releases me. You know what I mean? I'm your guy. The list goes on. Keenan McCardell, that situation was a debacle. Keyshawn Johnson, another situation [that] was a debacle. Joey Galloway, which was his man, was in the dog house all year because he got injured, broke his ankle or whatever. Brad Johnson, that situation was bad. Brings Jeff Garcia in here, oh, he's going to change things. I helped recruit him [and he] released me, kept Jeff and then put him in the dog house. Gets rid of Brian Griese, brings him, starts a controversy. It was chaotic. I'm giving you facts.
"How I feel personally? I could tell you that, too. I think he's a scumbag. I think he's a scumbag personally. ... You know what he told me? 'Simeon you'll be here in the next five years.' I got injured [and] this man's never said one word to me. I won a Super Bowl for you. I got 13 sacks, 12, 15 every year for you. I balled. I got injured [and] you let me go like it was nothing."
Gruden, in an interview with ESPN on Wednesday, tried to take the high road. He did not mention Rice by name.
"I'm not the first coach to take potshots," ESPN quoted Gruden as saying. "Hey, some people were taking potshots at Tony Dungy when I got here. Jeff Garcia, Michael Clayton, I wish those guys the best. . . . Some people have taken shots and I understand that not everyone likes or agrees with what I do as a coach."

Well, what do you expect? Any QB not named Rich Gannon was going to be a failure in Gruden's eyes.

Consider the source. Simeon is a well known d-bag to many around the league.

Not so sure future employers of Gruden will be concerned. His resume is what they look at, and a Superbowl title speaks volumes (Dungy or Gruden assembled aside).

I seem to remember Simeon Rice dissing his former teammate Pat Tillman after Tillman died in Afghanistan. Yeah, Simeon, your credibility is worthless pal.

He may have a point about Gruden, but this is the pot calling the kettle black.

Simeon just comes off as a whiny ex player. "I won a Super Bowl for you." It's called a team. Gruden was the leader of that team.

Who else is? Simeon complains about when and how he was cut, yet no other team picked him up except Denver for all of about 2 weeks. Simeon thinks he is a lot better than he ever actually was.

Rice thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread, he's a douche bag. That being said, Gruden is just as big a douche bag.

Simeon's just making excuse to help with the pain of realizing he's old and washed up as a player.

Simeon actually tried to play pro basketball after being drafted #3 overall, I think, and when the Cards got pissed at him, he acted like a child. This is the same idiot that said Brain Urlacher was a scrub and didn't deserve to be a Pro-Bowl MLB and didn't deserve to be a MVDP. Rice is one of the biggest cry babies ever. When people would complain about him being a horrible scrub against the run he would always say, "look at my sack numbers, I don't have to play the run." I mean what kind of freak doiuche bag says those things, and plus, because he was such a scrub against the run he won't ever be mentioned in the same breath with any of the top DE's to play the game, and then he has the nerve to get mad at people when they don't recognize him as a top DE.

i guess not many of you can understand that simeon is saying that maybe gruden and the team owes him a little loyalty. lets say you have worked in an office and are an important part of that office. if you get in a car accident that prevents you from doing your job for some time would you be happy if you were fired the next week? not me. i can definitely see where simeon is coming from. i have never liked gruden much. the whole jake plummer thing was a joke too!

you actually cannot be fired if you miss time from work for a medical reason. (with proof obviously)

Most people don't have someone throw them to the ground as hard as they can in their line of work either.
Simeon was old, no longer effective as a rusher and was always on the sideline with a booboo. He should've been cut, its not classless it's business.
