Default Bucs sign Kevin Carter

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Miami Dolphins defensive end Kevin Carter to a four-year, $23 million contract Monday. Carter, 33, has notched 97.5 career sacks, including 11.5 quarterback takedowns as a Dolphin. In other news, the Bucs lost out on the bidding for Dallas C Al Johnson, who signed with Arizona Monday.

That is definitely being overpaid, but as usual I am sure Allen knows what he is doing so he can cut him once his production levels off.

I agree that it is probably a bit of an overpayment for Carter, but the d-line was one of the glaring problems last year. Carter should help, in the short term, improve the d-line's play.

I completely agree. Carter is on the decline, he's no longer the end he once was but he should be an upgrade at tackle. I believe that depth is really important for a good defensive line, to sub in and keep the starters fresh late in the game. Right now we barely have starters let alone backups.

In the draft its unlikely we'll get an impact DT. The only 2 good ones are going to be picked below us and even if CJ is gone I wouldn't pass on Adams for either DT.

According to Pewter Report, the deal included NO signing bonus. If the Bucs want to cut him after one season, they will take no cap hit.

That's a relief, and makes me feel a lot better about the signing.

If that is true then that makes it an excellent signing. Bruce Allen working some more of his cap magic.

Thumbs up

Great job by Allen/Gru

Pewterreport.com

Sources have confirmed to PewterReport.com that Kevin Carter received NO signing bonus from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which makes the signing of Carter much more reasonable and acceptable.

While on the surface, it appears that Carter's deal rivals the deal that of former Bucs DE Dewayne White, it is far from it. White received a $10 million signing bonus and has $2 million of his base in 2007 guaranteed. He has a total of $19 million guaranteed over the first three years. Carter has less than $3 million in guaranteed money as part of his $5.2 million base salary this year. Should the Bucs want to release him at any time after this year, there would be ZERO cap hit.

White wasn't re-signed because he only produced 14 sacks in 5 years and he didn't earn the right to a big deal from the Bucs last year when he started the last eight games (getting only 2 of his 5 sacks as a starter).

With no signing bonus I love the addition of Carter.

We have plenty of cap room anyway, so guaranteed money isn't really a big problem. This just means we can still sign some guys and draft CJ while being sure that we stay out of cap trouble.
