Roman isnt worth keeping but Taylor is because at least Taylor will play on special teams and gain some actual gameday experience that he wont get on the practice squad.

The team tried to trade Roman and didnt get any offers for him so that should tell them that he's not worth anything and just cut their losses now instead of later. Why waste a roster spot on a veteran who'll be a backup when you can actually have a young player like Taylor instead who'll gain experience and knowledge by playing as opposed to just wasting away on the practice squad.

Roman, as crazy as this sounds, would be better out there, in a regular season game, than Taylor at this point. As much as we all hate on Roman, he is a better backup than Taylor, right now, and Roman can play both safety positions.

Dan, Brent is correct on this one, as much as we all hate Roman. If this was Madden, then it wouldn't make a difference, but a veteran who can wear the headset and be an injury-fill in is what Roman has over Taylor. Roman is an insurance policy due to Lewis having TWO concussions so far, Goldson and Reggie Smith have very little game experience, and Taylor bwing a rookie that needs more time to learn. Taylor definitely has more upside; he'll be fine on the practice squad for now and continue to develop.

Agree with the madFenian here, we're all remembering the Mark Roman of 2007-088 who stunk up game after game. He looked good vs. Dallas getting an INT, so he deserves a chance. But it's a last chance.

Can't ignore the glaring hole at safety in forthcoming drafts if Lewis can't own the SS job this season. It was ignored in the 08 draft & it came back to bite them that season, not surrendering the deep ball this yr. If they're still patching it up in 09, there's always Mays or Berry next April. It's too early to move Reggie Smith.

Watching the defensive starters failing once more get something resembling a pass rush vs the Dallas starters I thought that time is running short on Balmer or Manny stepping up & getting to the QB, can't put it all on Justin Smith or Haralson. If Boldin & Fitzgerald tear them up again in their opener b/c Warner has all day to throw like Romo did, time to consider a trade. Not that they have anything to offer for a pass rusher like say Julius Peppers, but the time to push the desperation button is then before the October trade deadline looms. Lack of an effective pass rush is the whole thru which their defense is bleeding to death, & the other 31 teams all know it.

I dont understand. You think that M. Lewis should be replaced but yet, we should still keep Roman??? I dont understand that at all. Lewis is the SS which is meant to be the player who's good at the LOS and in run support. The FS (Roman) is supposed to be the guy who's good in coverage and can make big plays. The problem isnt with Lewis, its with Roman at FS. What we need is a play-making FS to compliment Lewis.

As far as our non-existent pass rush goes, it remains to be seen if we'll be able to get to Warner in two weeks and it also has to do with the play-calling as opposed to the personnel on the field. After all, if Manusky is only sending the three DL to get after the QB while dropping the eight players in coverage, its not going to matter who we have on defense if their not going after the QB.

As for Peppers, he's playing under the franchise tender which is over $16m and I can safely say that us trading for him is not going to happen. Its okay though, im looking forward to next off-season because as of right now, both Ware and Merriman are playing under the final year of their rookie deals. I honestly dont see Ware going anywhere but I do think that there's a chance Merriman will be allowed to leave for free.

I also hate mid-season trades because they rarely if ever work out for that season. Mid season trades are basically just getting ready for the following season. Besides, who would be worth trading for anyway? I have confidence in Haralson and Lawson but its up to Manusky to use them as pass rushers instead of dropping them into coverage.

Either way, we'll find out in less than two weeks.

I dont think that M. Lewis should be replaced. That dude is better as he gets closer to the line.

I like Lewis, but i hope Reggie Smith replaces him soon. We could use more speed at the safety position. Goldson/Smith would be a nice safety combo for years.

I think we should at least think about replacing him via draft.

Huard released in favor of keeping Nate Davis as 3rd String QB

http://www.49ers.com/news-and-events...3-cdaf315267a0

I'm a fan of this move. There aren't many QBs on the market, but at 36, I bet there wasn't much trade value for Huard.

I kind of figured Huard would get released because there was no way we were keeping four quarterbacks on the roster and after seeing Davis play against DAL, it was pretty much guaranteed that he would be our third stringer especially since I didnt even see him clear waivers in order for us to put him on the practice squad.

As for Lewis, I have been a fan of his since I followed the Eagles in 2004 and 2005. Lewis is a solid tackler, good in run support and makes few mistakes. His weakness is playing coverage but thats why we need a play making FS who's good in coverage because that way, Lewis can play closer to the LOS which is his strength. He has three years left on his contract and barring injury, I'll be shocked if he gets replaced in that time. Roman is the guy that needs to be replaces as soon as possible, not Lewis.

He will get replaced soon...either later this season if the younger guys make strides or in the off season through FA, Draft or younger player progression. His days as a Niner are obviously numbered, but he will most likely make the team over Taylor at this point.

The more and more I watch Nate Davis, the more scared I get that we're gonna pass on a QB in this upcoming draft =[

If Alex proves to be obsolete this season, they'll take a QB in the early rounds for sure.

I don't know. I think they're going to be using their picks on defense. We got needs at DE, NT, OLB, CB and possibly safety.

I believe Ware re-upped his contract recently & is now the 2nd-highest, maybe highest paid Cowboy. He was the one guy Dallas saw to they sewed up before heading into a contract yr. in the uncapped yr, unless the league does something before like an interim cap or whatever. A consequence of that big $ going to Ware was losing Canty, & it really hurt them to see Canty go to the Giants in their division.

If the Bolts have any sense they will re-upp Merriman this yr, maybe they want to see him him play on his remanufactured knee 1st

Merriman will either look horrible, become less effective after his surgery and get dropped, becoming a huge injury risk for long term contract considerations...

OR

He plays like a champ, and gets a big deal (or at least franchised) by S.D. next offseason.

I doubt the Niners have any chance to get him.

He has not be re-signed. I don't know where you heard that.

You say that like it's a bad thing. You dont have to be a high pick to be a successful QB.

I know but it definitely helps. I'm not too sold, although I love how Nate is playing.

I'm a fan of Nate but if a top prospect like Snead is available at our pick we have to take him.

Davis is playing with more poise and composure as a rookie than Smith has shown in four seasons.

I wouldnt be surprised if Davis becomes our franchise QB in a few years while Hill is our stopgap.

That would be pretty sick. I mean Davis was considered a top QB in last years draft before the terrible ending to his season and his learning disability being discovered. I love his touch on the passes and his ability to throw hard lazer point spirals on the move.

Smith had only one good season, the only recent season when they mentioned the words 49ers & playoffs in the same sentence. That was the yr. he developed chemistry with WR Antonio Bryant & actually sustained drives. Too bad Bryant was a head case & got busted for a DUI & driving > 100 MPH while drunk the night after they upset the Vikings & exited the 9ers roster. It explained to me anyway why Parcells booted Bryant from Dallas 2 yrs. before.

The rest of Smith's tenure as a 9er has been clouded by injury, more injuries, then thrown under the bus by HC Nolan as a whiner when the coaches were criticized for putting him back in the game too soon while recovering from his latest injury. JMO here, Smith was was just dealt a bad hand as the #1 pick of the 9ers, all those knocks on him having to make a great adjustment from coming from Meyer's Utah system were very real. They should've gone with local Cal superstar Rodgers who went 23 picks later, but you know what they say about 20-20 hindsight. The team is as stuck with Smith as he is with them.

I'm so sick of the Alexcuses. He sucks because he has horrible mechanics and footwork. This accounts for his terrible accuracy. And his long release and indecisiveness are huge problems at the NFL level. Did he have it tougher than most since other teams kept stealing our offensive coordinators? YES. Is that an acceptable excuse for his never growing as a QB and never developing the proper mechanics and footwork to succeed? NO.
