Doubt that, but they'd likely one or more of the Jets' picks.

The same when the Bears accused us of it. We had to switch our 3rd rounder and give up our 5th. With Crabtree being so much more high profile, perhaps the penalty would be a bit stiffer.

The Briggs incident cost the Bears nothing, they were able to resign there guy. No missed time and I believe he signed for the original deal the Bears were offering.
The Crabtree incident (if true) has kept us from signing the guy at all and will probably prevent the Niners from ever having his services. How are they adequately compensated for being kept from haviong a top 10 pick on their roster?

Lets hope for the fact that we are compensated in a big way.

I have also recognized Eric Berry over Taylor Mays since the beginning of this college season. I've been watching Berry but amused by Mays' skill set. Berry is showing me he is a better football player, and I see that when I think about what the 49ers need. I am not distracted by Mays' 'Freak Index' when I imagine each on the 9ers. Mays brings his hitting to the table, but Berry can hit very well too. I think Mays could be a better fit on a smaller faster team, like Falcons or Seahawks, where he can provide the hitting presence. We need turnovers, and deep coverage. I can't say I've seen enough, but I believe Berry's man to man skills are superior to Mays'. Mays plays center field a large majority of the time, he can cover a great amount of ground. The Ohio State game exploited him to an extent. For me it comes down to the matchups with slot receivers that Berry could handle, and provide valuable run support in that same situation. I think Berry is more a corner w/ a safety build (both in HS right?) and Mays is 'backer w/ great speed even more than in a safety body. I think it's a question of when Mays will move to OLB in the Pro's.

Whoooo! 9ers ranked 3rd in the NFL in defense givving up only 50-something yds/gm.
I don't think they've been that highly ranked defensively since 1998.
Credit where it's due to Singletary for putting the fire back in the bellies of these defensive players & to Nolan for bringing in the Pro Bowlers through FA (Clements) or the draft (Willis), that's why this defense is actually stopping some people for a change.
We'll find out Sunday if they're for real when they have to stop Adrian Peterson.

Indeed. He wasn't a bad GM, just a terrible man manager. Credit where it's due to the man for grabbing Willis.

Nolan definitely had an eye for defensive talent.

Source. Interesting article, worth a read. Good contrasts between sources talking about Crab's niceness and the possible things luring him away.
Couple of tidbits got me thinking:
Quote:
Crabtree's posse isn't the typical one filled with high school chums, siblings and a sampling of hangers-on. His circle consists of at least three men over the age of 40: former NFL superstar Deion Sanders, Texas state Sen. Royce West and Crabtree's cousin, bail bondsman David Wells.
Sanders' comments about Crabtree reportedly touched off tampering charges against the New York Jets, but we'll get to him later. Aside from Crabtree's father, Wells could possibly be the biggest influence in Crabtree's life. He trained the youngster from Dallas at a boxing gym with no air conditioning and surrounded him with powerful men by the time he hit high school.
Wells says he's made millions in the bail-bonds business, and doesn't need to ride his cousin's coattails for money or access. He's gotten past the ropes and seen the NFL high life as a bodyguard for former Dallas Cowboys players Michael Irvin and Adam "Pacman" Jones, and is widely known in the Cowboys organization. Wells says it takes a village to raise a young African-American man, and that he always wanted to make sure the young Crabtree had someone strong to lean on.
|
The article further mentions the nexus between Eugene Parker and Sanders from his Dallas days, when Parker got him his monster contract. That and the idea of a home-state team, plus Jerry Jones wallet...anyone beginning wonder who the second team that's (according to Primetime™) willing to offer the big bucks is? (Apologies if I'm stating the obvious/something that's been mentioned before)
The potential for intrigue in this saga almost makes up for the holdout. Almost.

They never hid their love of Crabs when he had his first big season at Tech. However, they weren't foolish enough to think they could get him. But, if I remember correctly, before they traded for Roy Williams, the thought was that they might trade most their draft to get up to get Crabtree.

That was the same story as the rumor of trading up for McFadden, Jerry may have a few guys he likes every year and he does love home grown talent especially ones who he thinks will be a big draw, but there wasn't anything to trading up in the draft. I can't remember the last guy Jerry traded his entire draft to get, he really doesn't fall in love with players the way alot of reports suggest.

I figured as much, but I never like to rule out anything with JJ.

I hope Kory Sheets gets called up to the active roster this week. I would rather see him get carries then Robinson.
Also Panthers are 0-3 :D. I love Jake Pick 6 Delhomme.

He's horrible! Too bad for the Panthers they won't be able to use their top 10 pick on a QBOTF....cause it's going to the Niners!

Nevermind no Sheets this week:

That sucks. We should release Roman and promote Sheets. Honestly, im worried that once a starting RB gets injured for the season, that team is going to pluck Sheets from us.
And Nolan being able to scout defensive talent definitely helped us and too bad he didnt draft Rolle instead of Smith in 2005. Maybe, that Favre/Lewis play never happens with Rolle back there instead of Roman.

Panthers being 0-3 is great for us. I'm hoping they go like 2-14 but no better than 6-10. :)
I wasnt happy about it at the time but I must admit that I was wrong because im excited and looking forward to that extra first rounder in 2010.
