Troy Smith and Jarrett Brown as well as one next draft more than likely.

Singletary is a dumb for cutting Nate Davis at this point in time.

Pls explain that 1. If he's been around for 2 pre seasons and hasn't grasped the offence how long do you want to give him? A strong arm does not maketh a QB.

If Smith fails the future for us is a high 1st round pick next year.

Not if Baalke/Sing like Troy Smith more. If that's the case than it would be stupid NOT to make the move.

I'm surprised that they released Davis this fast. He was just entering his second season with the team and quite honestly, didnt do any worse than Carr this pre-season. And while they may be high on Smith, you have to wonder how much (if any) of an improvement he's going to be over Davis considering the fact that the Ravens released him in favor of keeping Bulger who at this point in his career is arguably worse than Carr.

And Carpenter no longer applies since he's in MIA but like I said, I would have just used him on special teams and use Bowman on defense. I dont want Bowman playing special teams because it increases his chances of getting injured and thats one injury we cant afford to have.

Our quarterback situation is still uncertain. Cutting Nate Davis at this point in time was a dumb decision because of that reason mostly. He did show a good amount of potential and even looked better than a lot of backups around the NFL. Especially in places like Buffalo or even Denver (Brady Quinn I'm looking at you).

And I don't know why everyone is saying "he hasn't learned the offense". Perhaps he's not up to speed, but we have to remember the guy has a learning disability. Singletary criticized him for being lazy. That I don't condone, however we will probably never know the extent to how much he knew or didn't know. He knew enough to actually be played in a preseason game that is for sure. And I'll take a lazy man anyday that can make a play for me over someone who knows the playbook, but is pure trash. How does knowing the playbook help you if your instincts are terrible? It doesn't do anything for you. Nothing. Nate Davis should have been put in the doghouse, but he shouldn't have been cut for Troy Smith (who apparently put loads of time in during the offseason, yet that didn't save his job.) That is where Singletary ****** up.

If Alex Smith goes down, that leaves David Carr and now Troy Smith ahead. Both of those guys have never shown any promise in my opinion. Perhaps they're not as lazy, who knows. But their instincts are not as polished in my opinion as Nate Davis.

And Singletary a few days ago publicly endorsed his decision to keep Nate Davis and now he releases him. That tells me the head coach just can't make up his mind. If he was looking for a replacement, why not just release him when the final cuts were made?

And Troy Smith is not an upgrade. Go to the Ravens forums. They hated the guy and are glad he is toast. Baltimore felt so comfortable without his services they're going into the season with two quarterbacks. Troy Smith has never shown any promise at the NFL level. Why not just promote Jarrett Brown? Because Troy has started two games in his NFL career? Stupid.

And if Alex Smith fails, yes be prepared to start back from square one and wait three more years. Hopefully Davis is still in the mix at that point (assuming he makes the practices squad).

Agrees with Ness.

Also, if Smith fails and McNabb doesnt re-sign with WSH and becomes an UFA, I sign him to a two year deal because with the team we have now, waiting for yet another QB to develop would be a waste of the talent we already have on the team.

The words "polished" and "Nate Davis" do not belong in the same sentence.

I'm not a huge Troy Smith fan but I'm going to trust the GM and Head Coach on this call, as Davis was a high risk/high reward pick in the 5th Round last year. He had 1st Round physical talent but his learning disability was a huge question mark. He obviously showed behind the scenes that he wasn't putting the time in nor demonstrating the work ethic that is necessary for him to overcome his challenges to be a good starting QB in the NFL. They moved onto the next guy with upside that they believed could be coached.

I see Nate Davis becoming a Raider....somehow someway soon. If Al Davis got that tape of him throwing 60 yards, is over, even if they have something like 4 QBs on their roster already.

Side note: Just watched Joe Montana on ESPN First Take; nostalgia on overload right now. :)

Coach Sing says that he cut Davis because he wanted 3 "NFL-ready" QBs on the roster. He'd hoped Davis would be ready, but isn't. He is hopeful he clears waivers so they can place him on PS. He likes Davis and they drafted him as a 3-year project.

Nate Davis has instincts to play the game. There are players that study their ass off in the NFL (like Troy Smith) that are garbage, so what does that tell you? Like I said before, if I had to choose, I'm going to take a player that can make a play for me (no matter how lazy he is) over a guy that can't make a play period no matter how smart or hard he studies. Singletary gave up on Nate Davis way too soon in my opinion. I don't condone Nate's lazyness, but at the same time I don't think he deserved to be cut this soon. Perhaps Nate doesn't have as much as a learning problem as Singletary has a teaching problem. Mike Singletary and co don't always know what's best and when it comes to quarterbacks this organization definitely doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Sing didn't "give up" on him if he's planning to have him on the practice squad, where he can take more time to be developed. He sent a message to a player he believes has potential, but isn't putting in the work needed to go with his instincts. Sing went with the player on the 53 that has been putting the "mental reps" in, allowing a strong message to be sent. I believe Davis has more value to the team on the scout team anyways, using his athleticism, etc. to mimic other teams' players and help prepare the Niners active players for gameday.

Sing might have saved Nate's career by giving him the wake up call early before he developed more bad habits.

How does the organization not get the benefit of the doubt with QBs? They've had very prolific QBs in Montana and Young. Furthermore, the GM, owner (that was actively involved with the team), and the HC that drafted Alex #1 overall are all no longer with the team. With the turnover that's happened since 2002, QBs can't be developed. The same personnel and definitely not the same offense have been established, making it all but impossible.

I understand how you read it but it's not a contradiction. The 49ers drafted Nate Davis as a 3-year project but that doesn't mean they expected him to NOT be able to play the position for 3 years. Sing hoped Davis would be ready to be an NFL backup by now, he is not. Hence the differentiation.

Because Jarret Brown wasn't at morning practice with the 49ers and Nate Davis just arrived at 49ers complex it appears as though...

49ers cut QB Jarrett Brown and sign QB Nate Davis to their PS.

Barrows confirms...

Quote:
Nate Davis clears waivers, headed to practice squad

Nate Davis cleared waivers today, and the 49ers already have added him to their practice squad. To make room, the 49ers released quarterback Jarrett Brown from the practice squad. We got a strong hint that Davis might clear waivers earlier today when Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks were content with their quarterback situation and would not put in a claim for Davis. The Seahawks have just two quarterbacks on the active roster and former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, who drafted Davis, has a role in the Seahawks front office.

Mike Singletary has been open in saying he was not happy with Davis' work ethic and that he wanted someone who would put more pressure on No. 2 quarterback David Carr. To that end, the team signed former Ravens quarterback Troy Smith on Monday.

I don't think that's the situation. For Davis to sign with another team they would have to add him to their 53 man roster, or convince him to move to another city to have the same opportunity he has in SF (PS).

Davis' main critique is his inability to pick up the nuances of the game and the pro system he is in. I don't think any team is willing to drop a QB who has learned their system for one who will struggle to accomplish the very same task.

Singletary is contradicting himself because he drafted Davis as a three year project meaning that he wouldnt be ready yet, but how can he be if he sees him as a three year project???

There is no difference. Either he sees him as a three year project like he said or he doesnt. Not only that but signing Carr to a two year deal months ago tells me that he already knew he wasnt ready. Of course, what I dont understand is that he signed Smith to a one year deal to be the third string QB which is what Davis was anyway. To me, this entire thing is just an attempt to wake up Davis but at the same time, if his learning disabilty is getting in the way, he shouldnt be an asshole about it and give him some time. After all, he's only entering his second season. Plus, im sure everyone knew about Nate's learning disability before drafting him so if thats what's holding him back or part of it, then they shouldnt have drafted him.

Quite honestly, I think this is just stupid because I dont see the point in signing Smith who was let go in favor of Bulger who at this time in his career is probably worse than Smith and Carr so what does that say about Smith???

But whatever, if Davis doesnt get signed by another team at some point this season, he'll be signed to the team with the rest of the PS players to compete in the off-season while Troy Smith will be an UFA. In short, everyone and everything will be exactly the same next off-season as it is now.

Not to talk much about the Ravens, dan, but Bulger was kept over Smith as he is more of an asset to Flacco. Their whole priority is Flacco. They don't need to groom Troy Smith to be their QB of the future, therefore he was expendable. Though Bulger's best days are behind him (due in large part by having shaky O-Line play in front of him), he was an accomplished QB in the league and will be able to help Flacco study film and learn little nuances of the game that Troy Smith hasn't even experienced yet.

The organization hasn't had the benefit of the doubt with quarterbacks because our last decent starter that was consistent left us eight years ago. I"m not talking about the old regime that brought along the likes of Young and Montana, obviously. And our current brass has proven nothing yet in that aspect.

As for Davis, I don't think he deserved to be cut in favor of Troy Smith. Singletary publicly endorsed keeping Nate Davis after the initial 53 man roster was finalized. Then when Troy Smith is realized he goes against what he said. But it doesn't really matter, he is signed to the practice squad for now at least, where hopefully his attitude about his career changes.

Most teams have their quarterback situation set by now. The season starts today.
