Speaking of mega-millions...

Allow this Dallas fan to add 2 cents here -- the Cowboys don't have that much to give up, maybe WR Roy Williams, or former #1 pick 5-6 yrs back CB Terence Newman, who they're going to cut anyway b/c he's due lke $9M & no way Jerry pays up on that b/c he's regressed as bad or worse than Clements, hence the Dallas need at corner for Peterson = the same with the 9ers. And Dallas has OL problems just like SF, except with a much older underachieving OL, I can see them passing on a draft day trade, even though they've done more of them than any other team. Dallas is allegedly in love with USC OT Tyron Smith who had a great Combine & I can see them going for him vs. a CB, although they allegedly love Amakumara too, I'm just not buying it -- there's a big dropoff between PP & the next tier of CBs including Amaukamara, & Tyron Smith can play RT for the Cowboys right away although he was a LT at SC, Leonard Davis &/or Marc Colombo are rumored to be no better than backups or will be released soon b/c they're burned out, used up, so replacements are IMO required.

Dallas like SF needs another C/OG, so I can see some maneuvering in the 2nd - 4th rds. between Dallas & the 9ers to land Wisniewski if he lasts that long, his versatility could easily boost him into the late 1st as playoff teams like Chicago & the Steelers are rumored to be going after interior linemen & there aren't that many good ones this yr. The Bears dumped Tommie Harris but this draft is chockablock with NFL-ready DTs.
Again, I dont think $5.2m a season for a playmaking FS like Atogwe is overpaying him. If anything, thats less than what the Redskins would usually pay. For a team like SF who needs a playmaking FS, $5m a season for Atogwe would have been a steal especially when you add him to an already potential top ten defense.

Roy Williams is due a $9.5m option bonus for 2011 plus his base salary is $5.1m+. No way in hell would any team acquire him via trade. As for Newman, he has an $8m base salary for 2011 but its not guaranteed and could always take a paycut to stay with the team. I dont see either being traded to any team unless they restructure their contract. And while Newman has regressed as a CB, could a move to FS be possible ala Rod Woodson? And Clements has regressed too, is old and costs more than Newman. UGH.

Yeah, I have read on the Cowboys forum that a lot of you guys want Smith at 9 to play RT with Free to stay at LT. Your interior is worse than ours because not only is Kosier (ex-49er) an UFA but Gurode and Davis are older than who our starters are at C and RG. If the 49ers re-sign Baas (which im hoping they do), all they need to do is start Snyder at RG over Baas and my OL is set for 2011. I wouldnt mind drafting a future center and/or guard to replace them in a few seasons.

If Peterson and Prince are somehow gone by 7, I would try to trade down into the late teens twice to get an extra second, third, two seconds or two thirds which I would then use to get back in the twenties of the first round. Having two first rounders, I would draft Pouncey and if still available DE Allen Bailey. Or even Wisniewski if possible. Of course, I would need a future C and RG so if both play the same position, I would go after Pouncey.

I was really hoping Kalil (as was every other team) to hit the market and let Baas walk but oh well. The way its looking, my 49ers could be regressing badly in 2011 because they could lose their C on offense but defensively, could lose Franklin, Lawson, Spikes, Goldson and Clements if he's released. Add in Sopoaga, Brooks and Reggie Smith being UFA's in 2012 and we have some problems.

Oh well, im just hoping the CBA gets done by next Friday so free agency can take place before the draft.

Don't say no because the value isn't right, he's 8th on Kiper's and he's 6th on McShay's big board. Don't say no because he's a spread quarterback, it's not the death sentence everyone makes it out to be as Sam Bradford showed just last year. Jim Harbaugh recruited Gabbert pretty heavily out of high school so he obviously liked his tools then. Maybe Gabbert's accuracy didn't develop like Harbaugh wanted and he's soured on him or something but I think with a coach like Harbaugh, he thinks he can fix things in a quarterback and would not be shocked at all if he chose Gabbert.

I'd basically say our pick will be either Patrick Peterson, Prince Amukamara, Von Miller, Robert Quinn, or Blaine Gabbert at this point. It's hard to envision all four of the defenders being gone but Gabbert could go as high as number one.

Maybe either Marcell Dareus or Nick Fairley but I just think there are bigger needs. Not sure why there's talk on here about wasting a top 10 pick on a "space eater" like Dareus or Fairley. I mean we have Justin Smith on our team, not exactly a space eater. I'm sure the Patriots were plenty happy with their pick of a "space eater" like Richard Seymour in the top 10. Dareus and Fairley are each pass rush specialists in a 4-3 and would be expected to get pressure in the 3-4 as well. Fairley worries me in the transition to a 3-4 but Dareus, not so much.

Also funny that Atogwe got that much. Rams fans weren't too sad to see him leave, most said he had one really good year and was average the rest. Way too much money for an above average 30 year old safety for a rebuilding team like the Redskins.

edit: A little more on Gabbert.

ďIf Iím telling you heís a top-10 pick, Iím willing to put my butt on the line and say heís a top-one pick,Ē Mike Mayock said. ďI mean oneís part of 10. Bottom line to me, if Iím telling you a kidís a top-10 pick, I believe in Blaine Gabbert. And you know me, and you know my belief about franchise quarterbacks. They trump every other need. If you donít have those guys, you donít win in this league. You just donít.Ē

http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2011/...-top-one-pick/
The only QB I would draft at 7 would be Locker and thats after several other players would already be gone. And even then, its 50/50. I personally dont want to draft a QB at 7 period. The talent and upside of players at other positions are far more worthy of the 7th overall draft pick than any QB is.

Rather have Dareus over Fairley but wouldnt draft either over my top four (Peterson, Green, Prince and Miller) and would have Bowers over both. I just dont think drafting a 3-4 DE is worth a top ten draft pick but thats just me.

Why does everyone bash Atogwe? He was consistently good (something we dont have at safety), healthy and a playmaker. One good season? Are you kidding me? Funny how all fans of any team seem to bash a guy when he leaves no matter how he played. Atogwe reuniting with Haslett and being the veteran safety next to Landry is a good move for them. I'm not looking forward to seeing Mays and Smith as the starting safeties in 2011 but whatever.

And just because Mayock believes in Gabbert doesnt mean Harbaugh does and years later, things change. Just because Harbaugh recruited Gabbert out of HS doesnt mean he still feels the same way or will see what he saw years ago. One thing is for sure, if Peterson, Prince, Miller or Green are still available at 7 and we draft a QB, im going to be pissed.

Besides, Jenkins is too young and talented to give up on in my opinion. Hell, I would take him for Clements in a heartbeat. If DAL was smart, they would move Newman to FS, draft Peterson or Prince to start opposite Jenkins and all they would need is a SS. Their secondary is worse than ours because they have no SS or FS.

So yeah, im worried they trade up with CLE to get Peterson. I'm just hoping that if they trade up with CLE to get Peterson (or Prince) that the other is still on the board at 7.
I see your point now,but still I hope one of them will be there. Either way i feel we will be in good shape draft-wise. even though PP would be perfect. Prolly shouldnt put all our eggs in a basket.

Dan, why the **** would you trade up for Allen Bailey? If we wanted a physical speciman that has no burst off the line, we would have just kept your favorite player, Kentwan Balmer. LOL.

I think he's a better prospect than Balmer was and unlike Balmer, Bailey's work ethic is far superior. And remember, DE's in a 3-4 are far different than DE's in a 4-3. In a 3-4, the DE's are mainly meant to engulf and contain the OL. Anything more is a bonus. DE's in the 4-3 are meant to be pass rushers and then play against the run. Huge difference in value between 3-4 DE's and 4-3 DE's.

Just because I suggested it doesnt mean I would do it. Honestly, im hoping he falls to us in the second round so he can replace Sopoaga since he'll be an UFA in 2012. Would only trade back into the first round if I wanted a player who wouldnt make it to us in the second and was worth trading up for. I listed Bailey as a suggestion. Whether or not I would actually trade back into the first round to draft him is 50/50 at best. It would be one of those things that I wouldnt make a decision on until that actual time.

I'm still hoping for Peterson or Prince at 7 so trying to trade down wouldnt happen unless both are gone as well as Green and Miller and probably Bowers too. If it was up to me and was able to trade down into the teens, I would most likely try to get one of the other CB's, mainly Brandon Harris and then trade back into the first round for OG Mike Pouncey. That would be my ideal scenario.

Yep, I'm cool with both those. Well done.

After watching Michael Floyd rape Brandon Harris in the bowl game, I just can't stomach the thought of counting on him in the SF secondary. We need an impact DB and I just don't think Harris fits the bill.

On the 2011 draft pg. that scout said he's a jerk, & he echoes what others have said about Smith's personality.

Some even used the letter before the b-hole, seems to fit. Jimmy Smith could be a locker room cancer.

I wanted Smith later in the first if we trade down but after reading that he was arrested twice in the last year and has attitude problems, I dont really want him anymore.

I really want Peterson at 7 or at least Prince. If both (and others) are gone by 7, I would try to trade down twice in order to get extra draft picks and then trade back into the first round.

I know Borat doesnt want Harris but I wouldnt mind him or Williams as a late first rounder as well as Pouncey to replace Rachal at RG.

Just hoping the CBA gets done this coming week so free agency can start already.

Aaron Williams is the third best corner imo behind PP and Prince. Id trade down and draft Williams and feel extremely comfortable with that.

Free Agency can't begin until the new CBA is in place.

We also can't execute any trades until the new CBA is in place.

Possible draft picks remain the same: Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Christian Ponder, Ryan Mallett, Ricky Stanzi, Andy Dalton, Jake Locker.

Relax man, deep breath.

Quick 3 round mock

R1- Patrick Peterson, CB
R2- Brooks Reed, 3-4 OLB
R3- Andy Dalton, QB

Top 7 picks

Carolina- Marcel Dareus
Denver- Daqaun Bowers
Buffalo- Cam Newton
Cincinatti- AJ Green
Arizona- Von Miller
Cleveland- Nick Fairley
SF- Patrick Peterson

One reason why i like Reed

http://rob-rang.blogs.cbssports.com/...82485/27752014

Quote:
Reed was timed at 1.54 seconds over the first ten yards, demonstrating a degree of explosiveness typically reserved for much smaller men. Reed's 1.54 seconds not only was the fastest of all defensive ends (North Carolina's Robert Quinn was second at 1.61), his split was also faster than some of the more highly touted athletes of the Combine, including Nevada OLB Dontay Moch, Tennessee-Chattanooga CB Buster Skine, Kentucky WR Randall Cobb, Georgia WR AJ Green, Troy WR Jerrel Jernigan, and Texas A&M OLB Von Miller.
Seems like an explosive athlete..

Thoughts on the mock?

Not bad. We get our franchise CB, a possible franchise QB and a pass rusher even though I dont think Reed will last until we draft in the second round.

Top 7 isnt bad and CAR/DEN can go either way. I do think that there's a chance Peterson could still go to DEN or even CAR if they lose Marshall. The only pick there that I see as close to a lock as you can get would be Miller to ARZ. I see them trading their 2nd rounder to PHI for Kolb but keeping their first rounder. I wouldnt mind Miller at 7 if Peterson is gone. Also think Miller could go to BUF as they could use an OLB in their 3-4. We kind of lucked out because DEN and CLE went back to the 4-3 defense so instead of four teams being ahead of us that un the 3-4, its only two teams.

Bengals would be stupid to pass on Green with T.O. not coming back and Chad possibly a goner too. If anything, eliminating the headaches and getting a young franchise WR like Green could make Palmer change his mind about retiring.

I think ARZ drafting Green is possible too. Think about it, Fitzgerald is an UFA in 2012 and cant be franchised, you have to wonder if ARZ would be better of trading Fitz for the best possible trade package, getting an extra first rounder in the process while drafting Green if he falls to them and then draft a franchise QB late first round.

One thing is for sure - should definitely be interesting to see what happens on draft day as always.

Our first three rounds could really go either depending who is on the board and our picks.Though I do sadly think its either Dalton or Stanzi in round 3.Unless all of our big guys are gone at 7 and we go after a QB then (I would rather not)Unless we trade down and go after Locker or maybe we can trade into round one like Denver did last year.I almost wish we wasn't picking top ten but it will all work out in the end I'm sure of it.With our new offense staff it should be alright from now!

Just read an article on PFT that says three teams are interested in Eagles QB Kevin Kolb. The source is Adam Schefter and while he doesnt actually mention the three teams, he does mention the NFC West excluding the Rams. Hopefully, its just one of those rumors flying around that never gets off the ground because I have no interest in Kolb whatsoever.

I do. I would have franchised Franklin for a second straight year and tried to draft the guy from Stanford in the 4th round. I forgot his damn name. Franchising Franklin would have at least given us another year to find a permanent replacement.

Do you think veteran Tommie Harris could play NT? He's only 28 and would come somewhat cheap. I'm not sure though if he can play NT.

In general, im worried about the defense overall. If the new CBA allows players to be UFA's after 4 years, we would have Franklin, Lawson, Spikes and Goldson as UFA's. Also, releasing Clements is a possibility and if that happens, we have FIVE starters that could be gone. Add in the fact that two other starters (Sopoaga and Reggie Smith) are UFA's in 2012 and our defense could become horrible overnight.

UGH. :(
