That's exactly what I thought when I read the article yesterday that he'd been released. LOL.

We're all stocked up at safety.

There are more teams interested in Maybin than Lawson. Figure that one out Dan.

That too. Decent athlete but just not a sound football player in any way. Kind of shocked all these teams are interested in him. That being said....

Quote:
Personnel report: After former Buffalo Bills first-round pick OLB Aaron Maybin cleared waivers, the 49ers were among the teams to inquire about signing him, his agent said. But Maybin decided he was not going to sign with the 49ers, opting to go in "another direction," his agent said. Maybin, the No. 11 overall pick of the 2009 draft, had no sacks for the Bills in two seasons.

Yeah, Maybin will go to the Jets I bet on a 1 yr deal. Peace.

If he was 20-35 lbs heavier and could rush the passer, I'd actually care.

That's really sad that Lawson can't even get more offers than Maybin.

Or maybe Lawson just isn't that good. Notice how no one wanted him and several teams are already contacting Maybin for his services mere hours after he was released.

This is a little misconstrued, as the timing is relevant.

Lawson was looking for a long-term deal for good money to start for a team. He didn't get that but still got a couple mil to start for a team and will have every opportunity to prove that he's worth more money and more years on his next contract.

Maybin will likely get less money than Lawson and is desperately trying to stick to a 53 man roster at this point for the upcoming season. He wasn't a salary cap casualty; he was so horrible that one of the worst teams in the league couldn't find a space nor a role for him on their team. He'll be happy to just stick on a good team's (like the Jets) roster as a backup.

Maybin is a "Tweener" OLB/SS with his weight and at the stage where he is a couple more looks from teams from being out of the league whereas Man-Law was an underachiever as a pass rusher and is still a starting-caliber OLB in the league, just likely in a 4/3 Defense instead of a 3/4.

I'm just saying that one is getting buzz from other teams, and the other wasn't. The entire time among free agency you never heard so and so going after Lawson. Not one team. Regardless if he was looking for a long term deal or not, he wasn't the big commodity he, or some fans, thought he would be. And eventually had to settle for a one year contract in Cincinnati.

Why can't people just admit the possibility that he's not a good player? It's not like it would be a total shocker. I swear it feels like Lawson is going to get the same excuses from some fans until the day he retires even if he has an unspectacular career.

Question is what are is your definition of "not a good player"? He has not lived up to his 1st round billing but he has proven that he is a productive player and can be a starter in this league.

Also reason Maybin is drawing interest is that he isn't asking for $3 million (like Lawson was) and he is still only 23.

I think Lawson is a good player but the reason why he is considered a disappointment after being drafted in the 1st Round is that he isn't a very good pass rusher, which was the primary need of the team that Drafted him. He is still a starting-caliber OLB in the league, just likely in a 4/3 Defense instead of a 3/4.

Excuse me. I'll say that he was a disappointment for what he was drafted for. In other words, a 1st round bust. I'm sure he could be a productive player in some regard, but not one that really stands out and not a megastar like everyone thought he would be. It's possible he revives his career with the Bengals, but I'd be really surprised.

Well if he plays in a 4-3 defense, he'll probably move to end. Perhaps there he'll finally find success as a pass rusher. I'm not sure what the Bengals run though.

By the way I downloaded the old 49ers-Giants game from 1988. It was interesting to see both Joe Montana and Steve Young play in the same game. I forgot how fast Steve Young really was. Not fast as Vick or Cunningham, but he was certainly fast and very elusive...and his accuracy was really nice. He fumbled three times though losing two of them, which I'm sure led to his benching. But as far as throwing the actual ball, he didn't really make that many mistakes and didn't throw into coverage or look that bad.

Of course Montana stole the show with a 3rd and 10 pass to Jerry Rice with seconds remaining in the game for a 78 yard touchdown. It was interesting, because Jerry Rice was having an awful, and I mean awful game that day and really couldn't catch a cold. The Giants defense was pretty decent with Pepper Johnson and Carl Banks leading the charge. Lawrence Taylor was out in this game, but so was Ronnie Lott for the 49ers.

Oh and for the 49ers secondary definitely suffered as they could not cover Lionel Manuel, the Giants receiver, for their lives. Charles Haley was a force off the edge and one of play was literally flying at Phil Simm's face and it looked like he decapitated him. Sim's checked his face for a second after he got up to make sure it was all there. Pretty funny. Got me kind of stoked for Brooks and Smith on that edge. Hopefully they make us proud this year.

All in all a great game. Funny to see a lot of the 1980's commercials too...all of them were like one epic mini movie.

Going by your thinking, im going to assume that you also think Crabtree is a bust too? How about Staley and Davis on the OL? Honestly, im curious to know who you think is a bust on our team right now?

As for the Maybin talk, two things pop to mind...

1. Jets cut Gholston and sign Maybin. Classic!!!

2. Fangio LOVES Monte Simmons whom, I believe, weighs less than Maybin.

Interesting you bring that up, Grant Cohn had nice things to say about on him in a certain OL/DL pass-rush drill at yesterday's practice....

Quote:
Two more players stood out in this drill –Will Tukuafu and Monte Simmons. Tukuafu gets a good push on whoever’s blocking him –more of a push than Ricky Jean-François.

Monte Simmons was ferocious in this drill. He’s the fastest outside linebacker around the edge, and he’s also the most violent. Jim Tomsula gave him a lot of reps and was pleased with his work, giving him atta boys and pats on the butt
.

Also some other interesting observations about some of our O-Line and pass-rush personel

In your case Dan, I don't think it's going to matter what I tell you. You seem to deflect all logical points because of your bias towards players that haven't amounted to anything significant. We've already been down this road before, and I really don't want to hear anymore of your excuses.

I could tell calling Manny Lawson a 1st round bust really got under your skin. God forbid this is actually a possibility.

I though this was interesting

Quote:
Bruce Miller and Colin Jones played both offense and defense today, sometimes one play after the other. Both guys had to constantly change between red and white jerseys, which was a comical sight. Miller played some fullback, tight end, defensive end, and outside linebacker, and he looked pretty good at each position. Jones played safety and wide receiver, but he dropped a few passes and caught none.

It is interesting but it's likely just because of people sitting out with injury and the team needing bodies without making roster moves. I remember all of the stories about Nate Davis playing WR, TE, and DB.
