That's a bit of an assumption as look what they paid Braylon. As Housh is still a FA, he's probably willing to play for the minimum, which will be pretty close to what Zeigler could be re-signed for; perhaps a little more as he has more years in the NFL accrued. Housh has at least been a productive WR in this league, whereas Zeigler has been struggling to make the 53 for years. I like Z and the coaches say he runs good routes, but Housh is a veteran who can likely add more value to the team while Morgan and Braylon are out.

That is assuming Housh is willing to have a heavily incentive-laced contract, like Edwards. He might be willing to accept something around $1mil with incentives for $3mil or so but he might just want 1 year/$2 straight-up. Zeigler will come with $1mil guaranteed.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Meh. Wouldn't be bad for a third or fourth option at the moment. Damn I'm really ticked that Morgan got hurt. Wasn't worth that final touchdown.

Hoosyourmoma is done. He was already slow as molasaes before and he looked like a relic last year. No burst off the line, just trying to bully CBs up the field. Pats worked him out and they passed and their usually in the market for a reject, former Pro Bowl WRs. No thanks.

Zeigler must still not be recovered from that ACL. Only viable explanation on why he wasn't brought in for a workout. Slim pickings for free agents WRs. I'd take Justin Gage, Chris Chambers or Kelly Washington over Housh. Hell, I'd even take some young rejects like Derrick Williams or Roydell Williams over him. At 34, I just dont see him bringing anything to the table.

Stafford may just get smashed in the face early and often. I'll go opposite of chicken little and say we may give up some yards, but keep the score manageable.

The key to this is making the Lions blitz to get pressure. If our line can contain their front four then things should be fine.

The Lions are a good team but wow they're being praised everywhere as a top 3 elite team. They've had some nice wins but most of them have been come from behind with their only real convincing win coming against Kansas City.

Really like the Swain signing. I like what I saw from him on special teams, and as a WR.

Looks like we don't have to debate this further as they've gone in another, better direction.

I bet he makes a case to stick around in the rotation when Braylon comes back.

Yeah well he's definitely not wearing number 16.

This sums up Swain's role pretty well, IMO...

Quote:
Is Swain being signed to replace Joshua Morgan?

No. Ted Ginn will replace Morgan on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. And Kyle Williams will replace Ginn as the No. 3 receiver. Then, after the bye week, Braylon Edwards is expected to return to action, and that bumps Ginn back to the No. 3 receiver. Nobody the 49ers could've signed was going to crack into the starting lineup. But Swain will suit up for Sunday's game. He'll be an emergency wideout. It's highly unlikely he'll see any snaps on offense. But he is expected to be one of the 46 players in uniform, so he'll play special teams. Swain recorded three special-teams tackles for the Packers in the Super Bowl. Certainly, Houshmandzadeh and Chambers would not be expected to run down the field and make tackles on kickoffs and punts.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/niner...90&feedID=5936

Add to that, Delanie Walker will probably get many more looks in the slot. His TD last weekend came in that role.

Crabtree really needs to step up here and take hold of that number one receiver spot he has. This is a great opportunity for him to start producing like the megastar we thought he would be.

He needs more support in the "Crabtree is a bust" thread.

It's sad. He's looked great the majority of his time. He needs to score more TDs so his perception can change.

It would be great if he was available to play during training camp and preseason so he could gel with his QB.

This is being overblown relentlessly. His chemisrty with Alex is fine. That's not the reason for his pedestrian stats. Its been a combination of conserative play-calling early on him missing snaps trying to get his foot back healthy. Some Sundays your reads will take you different places. Last Sunday, Alex's reads took him elsewhere. I don't think gel-ing with Alex has anything to do with it. Crabs is fine. He's playing hard, blocking extremely well and making plays when they present themselves in the passing game. I could care less what the perception of him is from other fans around the league who don't know the ends and outs of this team. If his foot stays healthy, Crabs will get his. Its still alot of football left to be played.

I don't think the 11-15 (dis)connection is being overblown. Someone in Barrows' chat yesterday pointed out that Alex has been pretty spot on with all his receivers with the exception of Crabtree. The catch rate to target rate backs it up:
(First number is # of receptions, second number is # of targets this season)
Davis 22/26= 84.6%
Crabtree: 11/22 =50%
Morgan: 15/20=75 %
Walker: 9/13=69.2%
The one thing I do like is Alex is attempting a lot of throws to Crabtree and with Morgan out Crab's target rate is going to go up. I think he is finally going to breakout after the bye week.

Crabs has also dropped a few balls, which that stat doesn't take into account. He catches those balls and that rate is probably closer to 85% and a non-issue. Dropped passes really has nothing to do with chemistry, per say. Like I said, the whole chemistry angle has been overblown. Crabs needs catch those passes, plain and simple. I believe once the offense is opened up more Crabs will see his opportunities increase. They've looked like they're on the same page. That should be the least of anybody's worries.

I don't think it is as much a chemistry as it is a Crabtree dropping the pass thing, either. A few have those this year have come on what looked like miscommunications, though, like late against the Bucs when Alex threw a corner and Crabtree ran a post.

Which is the "chemistry" that I feel is off. Not "man-to-man" but "on-the-field."

Agree. Their front four is scary and Megatron is biggest threat on the outside in the league but I saw cinks in their armor Monday Night. Their secondary is suspect and their offense doesn't really sustain drives. Their like the Eagles in that its big plays or busts. Their OTs look a little suspect and Stafford is widly erratic with his throws. Missing two of our top 3 WRs and injuries to the secondary have me sacared to death but I like our chances. I don't see an elite team. I see a swagged-out, confident team, making plays when they need to. But the fact they were down big to a medicore Vikes team let's me know they are defintely not there yet. It will be a great game to see how our players respond to a little success and to see if Harbs can keep their eye on the prize. If we win, Im punching our ticket to the playoffs for sure.

If they win it's another huge step for the team. Hold off on the playoff talk until it's all said and done. Don't want the team getting overconfident and blowing it again.

LOL, its okay for me to be over-confident as long as the team and the coaches aren't. And blow what again? When was the last time this team was 4-1? 5-1? If we march into Motown and beat a red-hot Lions team for a 3rd straight road win(which would make us 3-0 on the road this year) you bet your ass Im going to believe that this team is playoff bound. No way anyone could have forseen that kind of start. I thought we would come on in the second half of the year.....and I still believe we'll be even better after the bye. If we win against the Lions, at worst, Im thinking 10-6 which should be more than enough to win the west.

And its official, Morgan done for the year. Placed on IR. Also, Chase Beeler was released from the practice squad. They must have their eye on someone....

**EDIT** signs WR Kerry Taylor to the PS. Former ASU player and nephew of former Niner John Taylor. We seemed to have a certain affinity for these 6'0, 190-200 lb young WRs to groom....
