I suppose there is always a chance but why invest such a high pick on a player you hope will never play a snap?

For a few reasons. One is far out there but it may become more the norm if these QB contracts keep getting out of control.
1. The 49ers are still running the read option while Kaep has been smart thus far the nature of the scheme dictates a higher risk of injury.
2. EJ is the closest thing in this draft to Kaep
3. (out there one) in two years we will see Kaep as a free agent I could see the 49ers using EJ as a cheap alternative to resigning Kaep in favor of keeping three other major starters.

I like Rambo a lot too, Rambo is more of a pure FS than Swearinger or Elam who are more FS/SS hybrids. Rambo doesn't bring the same type of intimidation however, which is ironic given his name.
As far as pure FS goes, after Vaccaro I would say Rambo is definitely in the discussion as the #2 pure FS. The other two guys that could give Rambo a run for his money are David Amerson if he is converted to FS and Phillip Thomas from Fresno State.

I just don't know what precedent there is for drafting your franchise QB's replacement after he has only started 7 regular season games for you.

I really just want the Duke and Rambo tandem. They compliment each other perfectly. And their names couldn't be better for the position.

There is none but there was also no precedent for these QB contracts that take up nearly a fifth of your total salary cap space. Also even if he is not the replacement you are a team with 15 draft picks and no holes. A cheap backup at QB who is similar to your starter is not the worst thing in the world.

I want them to take Matt Scott as a developmental guy and long term backup to Kap in the middle rounds. That makes more sense than a 2nd Rounder when this team is literally 'a player or two away.' Also, there isn't a Kap clone in this year's Draft, but mobile guys will be taken earlier than normal thanks to Kap, Wilson, Cam and others. Don't see them going QB any earlier than the 3rd this year under any circumstance.

Kaepernick will be extended in a year from now so all of this replacement talk is meaningless. Team finally has a true young franchise QB with a cannon for an arm. Kaepernick isnt going anywhere.

We have 14 total draft picks but I expect some trades to where the end total will be between 8-12 because there's no way 14 rookie make it past the final 53. Dont see us drafting a QB period. I think the team will sign a veteran later in the summer just in case but thats not even a guarantee.

Nobody is talking about "replacing" Kap, just a worthy backup option due to injury. With a team that is this deep at so many positions and that has so many Draft picks, it'd be wise to have depth at the most important position in the game.

How much do you think the extension will be worth cap wise.

I think it really depends on next year. If he has another good year he'll make bank. Maybe even more if he can be a key part of a SB (winning!) run next year.
I think a minimum of $11-12 million per year on average can be expected. Likely 12-15 with a possibility of shooting up too. You never know with QB's.

I know but I prefer a veteran backup as opposed to a rookie. Either way, I still dont see the team drafting a QB at all and I think that instead of having 14 rookies, we'll end up with between 8 and 12.

Pretty much what 87 says. Right now, his value is high which was apparent after the Bears game as you just knew that Smith was done as a 49er. I'm going to say between $10-15m depending on how he plays in 2013.

Screw that Manual does not have the strong arm as big a Kaep does nor is faster then him. If we replace Kaep its back to the drawing board and that will suck. I'm pretty sure he will have a great solid season next year and we'll want to resign him.

I like Zac Dysert and I could see Harbaugh bringing him in as a project, and maybe we can get a team to overpay for him eventually. That seems to be the trend anyways...

I watched three games and unless he got a clean shot on someone while they were being wrapped up by a teammate he would always side shuffle and try to wrap up a leg. I think more appropriate for him would be violent because when he wraps people up he twists and wrestles and makes a lot of quick twitch movements. Rambo and Thomas are both far more physical players.

I'd feel comfortable with Tolzein as the backup. We should get a third quarterback on the roster eventually though.
