They dont know if Bruce is coming back so that leaves Battle, Hill, Morgan and Ziggy. Most teams like to have 6 WRs on the active roster. I dont see the harm in bringing him in like they did with Johnson last year.

Would you prefer they stick with the players that aren't getting the job done? Who cares how much money is tied up in those guys. We have a ton of cap room (every year). Cap concerns are a distant past with this team. Hell, they're a distant past for most every team. Look at the Redskins. They had $8M in cap space and just signed DeAngelo Hall and Albert Haynesworth. Our front office knows how to navigate the cap real well too.

I don't believe that one season is enough to know if these guys can get the job done. The starting DEs in 2007 were Bryant Young and Marques Douglas. The 49ers signed Justin Smith and drafted Kentwan Balmer just last season. Ray McDonald saw his first significant time last season as well and is still extremely young. History has shown that these types of players take time to develop and what type of development is gained if the players are being constantly shuffled?

The Redskins may have signed Haynesworth/Hall but they release players and re-do other player contracts EVERY year.

I dont want to overpay Canty and would rather see us bring in Olshansky but if Manusky isnt mentioning him to anyone than obviously he's not worth going after.

Oh well, its going to be boring but that's okay. Better than overpaying players we dont need or want.

if the FO is really that set in getting some more DEs, i would much rather we spend a 6th rounder or something on a guy like Rulon Davis from Cal, then overpay some FA

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee says the 49ers are showing interest in Cowboys tight end Tony Curtis. Curtis could replace Bajema, who is drawing interest from the 49ers, Jets and Rams.

Barrows reports that we reached a deal with Spikes for 2 years:

3:26 p.m. Alex Marvez of Foxsports.com reports that the 49ers have agreed to terms with inside linebacker Takeo Spikes on a two-year contract. Spikes had an excellent season in 2008, finishing second on the team in tackles and pairing well with youngster Patrick Willis. Immediately after the season ended, Spikes spoke glowingly of Willis and the 49ers and said he wanted to return in 2009. The 49ers have not groomed any young players to play the "ted" linebacker spot Spikes played in 2008.

Scotty Mac was true to his word when he said they would be "taking care of their own guys" instead of making a huge splash in FA. I'm really glad they're not even considering overpaying Housh for 10+ Mil a year.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jones leave SF with a contract. Couldn't hurt, so long as he doesn't wear the cursed #81 jersey.

If Jones can be signed for reasonable money, then I'd be on board for this transaction as well. He can fill in for the role they wanted Bryant Johnson for last season. The WR core still needs another playmaker. Hopefully Crabs will fall!

Nate Washington was someone whom I thought the Niners would go after. Perhaps they might if something can't be worked out with Jones. It would be nice to add a proven deep threat (Washington) to the WRs.

I think if Jones is signed, that's all we'll see in FA for the WR position. I believe that they'll target a WR in the draft during the later rounds. I remember after last year's draft reading about how Morgan was targeted because Scot thinks quality WRs can always be found in later rounds.

Warner's agent has had in-depth conversations with San Francisco 49ers officials, a source told Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com.

Warner became a free agent Friday after he and the Cardinals failed to reach a deal on a new contract. The 37-year-old quarterback has made it clear that he wants to remain in Arizona for what probably would be the final two years of his career.

Bartelstein said he and the Cardinals continue to talk.

"Nothing's changed other than free agency has started," he said Friday evening. "It's an hour-by-hour situation is the best way I can put it."

Bartelstein said Warner deserves a salary to match his status after leading the unheralded Cardinals to the Super Bowl last season. The agent said that would be an average of the top five paid players at his position, about $14.5 million.

But Warner's age -- he will be 38 when next season starts -- could hold down any interest in him and lower the amount he will be paid.

If he can't strike a deal in Arizona, Warner could end up playing against the Cardinals twice annually. The 49ers play in the NFC West, as do the Cardinals.

The 49ers' woes at quarterback were thought to have been resolved when the team selected Alex Smith with the first overall pick in the 2005 draft. But because of ineffectiveness and injuries, including a shoulder injury that required surgery last year, Smith's future in San Francisco is shaky.

San Francisco would likely have to pay Warner more than the $10 million to $12 million per year its offering. If Warner accepted an offer from the 49ers, economics along with the team's spotty quarterback play, would dictate that he go to the Bay Area as the starter.

The 49ers have used eight different starting quarterbacks the past three seasons, and landing Warner, even at his age, would provide much-needed stability at the position.

VERY surprising news. It seems highly unlikely that he'd leave Arizona but I wouldn't be against it. He seems to only want a 2 year contract so that would still leave all other QB scenarios in place. Shaun Hill, Alex Smith, and a potential draft pick would all still be possibilities because of the limited term that Warner would provide.

Source says SF has a "legitimate shot" at Warner

I still think he is using SF as leverage but if we do have a shot do you go for it? If we do sign Warner, I would like to see SF make a big push for TJ as well. Might as well go for the big off season if we sign Warner.

Who should I pick in the group mock?

http://draftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30563

BTW I traded down to 20 just for fun, I don't actually want the 49ers to trade back any farther than 16th.
