Chiefs are running Clancy's 4-3 Under (LONG)
Confirmed by Haley interview on kcchiefs.com "We lined up in an under front for the entire 36 minutes"
I looked up this defense and found a very interesting article by Pete Carroll on this scheme and I feel alot better about it then an actual 3-4. Here's Coach Carroll's assement of every players role in this defense:
"At Nose Tackle you have to find a player who likes to mix it up. We want a big guy in there who likes to get down and dirty. He is going to get doubled a lot on the run and pass and is going to get down blocked a lot. He has to be a tough player. This guy can be a short and stubby type of player."
Tank all the way
"The other defensive tackle the 3 technique player should be your premier interior pass rusher. He is going to get a lot of one on one blocks as it is hard to double team him because of where he lines up."
Dorsey ( 1 on 1s= :))
"The defensive end to the tight end side needs to be a defensive player that can play the run. He does not have to be a big time pass rusher. He has to play the C gap and stop the run."
Turk?? I think he can do it. Draft Kyle Moore or Mitch King in the middle rounds.
"The Mike linebacker is a traditional middle linebacker. He is instinctive and makes a lot of calls for the defense. He may be the guy with the most experience or the best feel for the game."
Zak for now sounds like a pretty good fit (better then 3-4 for certain)
"The Will linebacker can be a smaller player. He is generally protected in the defensive schemes and will not see as many blocks. All you want him to do most plays is flow and chase the football. We want our fastest linebacker at this position."
THIS is where i started to get excited DJ WILL be an absolute monster if he isn't taking on blocks.
"The Sam linebacker has to be a good containment player. He has to be big and strong enough to play on the edge of the tight end. He has to be able to run in pass coverage also."
Vrable. This guy goes after the QB on passing downs too. I can see Hali getting some snaps here as well.
"The defensive backs that are the best run defenders are our safeties. The Free Safety is another player who makes a lot of tackles for us. He has to have good instincts. He is what we call a natural player. You don’t have to coach this player too much. He has to have a feel for the everything and understand the big picture."
"The corners have to run fast if you plan on playing bump and run. If they don’t run fast then you can still play with them. But if your corners are not faster than the wide receivers you are facing don’t play bump and run. Your asking them to do something they can not do and they’ll get beat deep. It is a race when you play bump and run and if you can’t win the race don’t play bump and run."
"If you have a million reads for your secondary you are crazy. They don’t need that even at our level. All they need to know is their primary responsibility and then secondary. At the highest level in the NFL the pass game is as complex as you can imagine. However if a defender can play the post and the seam route then they can learn to play at that level. The thing that kills and breaks down a defense is a ball being thrown over the defender’s head for a touchdown."
It seems like Coach Carrol runs mostly man coverage out of this defense, but I see us mixing it up with alot of zone too for obvious reasons.

Ya, the Chiefs are looking good (and always have) for just about any 4-3 defense. They need a couple pass rushers out of this draft and a guy with good potential at the Mike.

<+ScottWright> Why not. Baldwin does need a sparring partner...

Q: How did you line up on defense on the front seven?
HALEY: “I knew that was coming.”
Q: I gave you 10 minutes.
HALEY: “We lined up the entire 36 minutes in an ‘under front.’”

Who thinks Aaron Curry can play the SLB position? Keep in mind this is the same position Chike Okeafor played for the Cardinals in this scheme. I think with his athleticism, work ethic, and the coaching of Gibbs and Clancy he can play any of the LB positions in this defense.

I still don't think it is set in stone what we are going to play on D as for Curry I'm on record saying he won't be the pick that said I feel he could play any LB spot be it the 4-3 or 3-4.

Seeing that this is our DC's scheme, it's a good fit for our personell while still having that 3-4 aspect for Pioli (it is very similar to a 3-4), and we ran it the entire first practice, I'd say it's a good bet we're going to be running this 4-3 Under.

2 words...Tyson Jackson. This guy is really strong and is a GREAT run stopper.

You have Brandon Flowers, future best cornerback in the NFL and Hall of Famer. No worries.

The thought of Thomas and Vrable starting without much behind them makes my stomach churn. We need Curry.

I'm going to argue this until I'm blue in the face. WHERE is Jacksons production in college? He has NONE. He'll be a solid starter but he will NEVER be the game changer we need.
One of the things that Pioli covets over almost anything else (if you can tell from his drafts) is VERSATILITY. Jackson will NEVER be a pass rusher. He will be a solid gap run stopper, period. Curry, on the other hand, can play every position in the 3-4 or 4-3 under. He's as versatile as it gets.

I didn't say any thing about Jackson in this thread but some Chiefs fans seem to think if we don't take Curry were doomed one player does not make or break a team.
The season is not lost if we don't get him I have a feeling if we don't draft him it will be the end of the world for some fans and it is not that big of a deal.
If we take Curry I'm fine with it great player but the hype this guy is getting from some Chiefs fans is insane.

We still need a weak side DE though or we're just going to have the same problems as last year.

I saw a great article right before the Super Bowl from the Cardinal's linebacker's coach explaining their 4-3 under defense that people assume is a 3-4. Now I can't find it. Think it was on ESPN.com. But that's what the Chiefs will be trying to run.
