so going "HAM" is good right?

Man it just seems to obvious we'll take him at this point and he obviously wants to be here.

lol going ''HAM'' means Hard As a M*****f***er

Sentence: Joe Johnson scored 45pts tonight he was going HAM out on the court

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I always liked Rennie Curran, hes quick and has a strong nose for the ball
his downfall is that hes on the short size

Atlanta Falcons eye Mizzou's Sean Weatherspoon

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/spo...E?OpenDocument

Quote:
Weatherspoon got plenty of work in Wednesday when the Atlanta Falcons came to Columbia for a private workout. The Falcons contingent included general manager Thomas Dimitroff, coach Mike Smith and defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder.

Which means Weatherspoon may be more than just the people's choice in Atlanta. In a recent poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's website, Weatherspoon was the landslide choice by readers as the Falcons' first-round pick in the draft April 22
Quote:
The Falcons did the same thing last year, coming to Columbia for private workouts with defensive lineman Ziggy Hood and safety William Moore. Weatherpoon, in fact, watched those workouts, so he knew what to expect Wednesday. The Falcons ended up taking Moore in the second round.

Weatherspoon said his workout with the Falcons lasted about 50 minutes and consisted of linebacker drills only.

"No 40-yard (dash), no short shuttle, no cone drills," Weatherspoon said. "It was all linebacker stuff ó what linebackers have to do. Like back-pedaling. Breaking at a 45 (degree angle). They see me as an outside linebacker in their system."

The Falcons already have a budding star from the Big 12 at middle linebacker in Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton, who just completed his second NFL season. "He's a good player for them," Weatherspoon said. "So I guess I could be a pretty good complement to him."

It's really a match made in heaven it seems at this point. I don't think there's any way we pass on Spoon unless the Giants or someone else scoops him up before us.

Would the Falcons fall so much in love with him that they would consider a trade up to select a head of the Giants?

Highly doubt it. Dimitroff makes serious use out of his picks and we are already down a 2nd rounder. Many believe we didn't make too many moves in free agency because we knew we'd rack in some compensation picks. TD strikes me as a guy who's willing to pull the trigger in the middle rounds, but I just don't see it happening in the first, especially for a 4-3 OLB. But, unless this is the biggest smoke screen of all time, it's pretty obvious that we are huge fans of Spoon and will more than likely take him if he's on the board.

Not a good move to trade up for an OLBer in the first. We'll just take Brandon Graham and there should be solid OLBer in the 3rd that can contribute right away.

What do you guys think of Spencer Adkins'es chances of contributing next year?

Im hoping Adkins becomes what Nicholas used to be, a go get em special teamer that stands out and makes some good plays, get in on maube some spot duty and get a chance. He has the physical tools and kinda like a Coy Wire type player hopefully with the motivation to do well.

Im a Falcons GM for a Mock Draft on another website. With my first, I got Spoon. Was thinking about going Wilson, but he was picked by the 9ers. I see that your guys' next pick is at 83, what other picks do you guys have besides you first and third rounders?

I believe we lost a 7th (Tye Hill) and should get a 3rd/4th, 4th/5th, and possibly a 7th in compensatory selections.

I still think Brandon Graham is the way to go at #1. Spoon looks to be a DROTY contender and the leader for our team for years to come, but our secondary is still iffy as ****. The only reason we feel somewhat better about it is because we signed the most penalized CB in the league last year and our CBs finished strong against the trio of Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, and Brian Brohm. The pass defense is still hurting badly and I dont understand how we are going to advance in the playoffs if QBs like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Tony Romo can pick apart the pass defense. Pass rushers are game changers and a line with Abraham, Jerry, Babineaux, and Graham (with the rotation of Thomas Johnson, Biermann, and Sidbury) sounds exactly the type of formula you need to advance deep into the playoffs.

Mike Peterson can't cover for ****. He's old and looked pretty slow last year and was beat a lot. Spoon can help the pass coverage with his athleticism.

Yeah, it'd be nice to find out.

I'll just post this up in the mean time.

Searching for Brian Orakpo
Pudge on March 22, 2010 ó Leave a Comment

In the article discussing which players could fit at linebacker for this team back in February, I talked about the team looking at SAM linebackers that could be upgrades over Stephen Nicholas in coverage. But since I wrote that article, perhaps itís not coverage ability that really concerns the Falcons. Perhaps pass rush ability will take priority for the Falcons.

Iíve come to this conclusion thinking why the Falcons worked out Jerry Hughes. Perhaps itís due diligence and the Falcons are interested if Hughes can make the transition to defensive end in the pros. But the reports indicate the Falcons worked him out at linebacker, and I have no reason to doubt those reports.

So that got me thinking about whether Hughes would be a good fit here in Atlanta. If youíve read my scouting report on Hughes, I didnít think much of his chances of sticking in Atlanta as anything more than a situational pass rusher.

But Iím starting to change my stance. Because instead of the team looking for a linebacker that can be an upgrade over Nicholas in coverage, maybe they are trying to maximize their pass rush potential in order to find a player like Brian Orakpo. Orakpo split time at outside linebacker and defensive end for the Redskins this past year and proved very productive in that role (11 sacks). When the Falcons go to the nickel package, Nicholas is pulled off the field. Obviously if the Falcons replaced him with a player better in coverage, then that player could stay on the field. But the Falcons are going to have to pull someone off the field in nickel situations in the front seven to make room for the extra cornerback.

They donít want that player to be Curtis Lofton, otherwise it makes the team susceptible to the run. Because opponents will just force the Falcons into nickel situations and just run the ball out of three and four-wide sets. This happened quite a bit when Ed Hartwell was the middle linebacker. And Iím sure the Falcons want Mike Peterson (or his successor) also to be the other nickel linebacker.

So then the question comes how does the SAM linebacker get work in nickel situations? Rushing the passer. He can play end, spelling whoever is the starter at left end and play on passing downs. This is exactly what Orakpo did last year, playing as a stand-up linebacker on first and second downs and then putting his hand on the ground on third downs.

Does Hughes fit this mold? He definitely gets the job done as a situational pass rusher. But the concerns about Hughes is whether he is going to be an impact defender as a stand-up linebacker when playing the run and the occasional times he has to work in coverage. Orakpo didnít have much success in that realm, but obviously there is an acceptable amount of trade-off when you can get 11 sacks. Personally, I think South Carolinaís Eric Norwood is a better fit for the Falcons since heís much more developed as a run stopper and coverage guy having played in space at linebacker the past two years.

Last year, I wasnít that high on Clay Matthews because I thought he didnít fit too well in our scheme. The Falcons reportedly showed considerable interest in Matthews last year, and at the time it didnít make a ton of sense to me since I didnít expect him to get a lot of opportunities as a pass rusher in our scheme. He went on to have 10 sacks for the Packers last year.

But now Iím much more open to the Falcons drafting a ďtweenerĒ at linebacker that may traditionally be viewed as a better fit in the 3-4 than 4-3.

I like Hughes, but I think 19 is too early for him. I'd take Kindle at 19 though.

4-3 OLBer and WR is not what gave up most problems in 2009. Spoon is a great pick if he's there but there is not WR worthy of 19. The best option would be a pass rusher, weather it's a DE/OLBer tweener or a pure DE, doesn't matter.

The only offensive guys I want that could conceivably (but won't) fall to 19 are Dez Bryant and CJ Spiller.

3rd and a 5th. What I expected. Was hoping we might be able to sneak a 7th.

I'm on the Sergio Kindle train as of this moment, if it's true that he could be in an Orakpo-esque role.

Nice, 3rd and a 5th apparently.

Sergio Kindle is supremely athletic, but I'm not sure he's a character fit.

Lots of interesting options. I think there are only 3 or 4 positions (MLB, S, QB, FB) where I'd be totally shocked for us to use our 1st.
