Stephen Jones was just on with Norm and he said the Cowboys have 23 first round grades on their board.
Very interesting number.

My guess is there will be about 5 guys taken before us that are complete shocks for folks who have been paying attention to the draft process.

Rumor has it that the Cowboys are trying to trade up with the 49ers to grab Earl Thomas.. that should make a few of you wet.

On ESPN's mock draft some guy from ESPN Dallas just had the Cowboys select Morgan Burnett at #27... WTF?

I would like to get Earl, but giving up our 2nd and 3rd this year is too steep. If we could swap our 1st, give them our 3rd and our 2nd next year. I think I would go for that.

I've been hearing Dez Bryant everywhere, but I still dont buy it. I think we're targeting safety with the first pick. And if I had to put my money on one of them, it would be Nate Allen.
Nate is the clear cut 4th safety in the draft, I'd personally put him at 3, ahead of Mays. And as far as fits go, it's one of the best ones out there for us. Allen is right on that first round border, I dont think we'd shy away from taking him at 27, depending on how things fall. Latest mocks have him going in the first few picks of the 2nd round anyway.

If we're interested in moving up for Earl Thomas AND are able to keep our 1st rounder then I'd be happy with that, but it sounds impossible.
Giving up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd is just dumb. I guess I gotta read that link.

Me too.
Again, if we could do our 1st, 3rd and next years 2nd or 3rd, I would do that.

Put me on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd being too steep bandwagon. This team is in good enough shape that you don't need to give up so much to get a player. As much as I'd like Earl or Berry, the Cowboys are too far down to get them unless something crazy happens.

I love Earl Thomas as much as anyone, but I'd be pissed if we gave up a 2nd and 3rd, plus that seems like a 49er beat writer trying to come up with the best case scenario.
Earl Thomas has been available in early 20's in many mocks, no need to pull the trigger and go that high to take him. If he's there at #20 then I'm all for it, but this price is way too steep.

It would definitely have to be the right deal, but swapping firsts, either a 2nd or 3rd of this year and a second next year would be worth it to me! This guy is a top tier safety. If he came out next year, he would be considered where Eric Berry is this year.

Their is no player in this draft worth a 1/2/3 for us.
We don't have that kind of need anywhere -- even Safety.
What we do need are QUALITY backups and hi-probability future starters.
We can't repeat last year.

I completely disagree....
I think we NEED a playmaking safety in order for this team to push on towards the next level.
Sure, I would like a back up lineman who can be quality, but you can find that quality guy in the 4th or 5th. Happens all the time with other teams.
This is the year to get a top notch safety. If we don't move up and get Earl, fine. But take a guy who can make a freaking difference. There are always decent backup linemen each year you can supplement with, but this year there are numerous quality safeties, either early on or in the 2nd round. Find a way to get one of them.
If we settle for an Odrick or something with our first, I would be ok with that. As long as we get a guy in the 2nd that can help us out, a cover corner guy or something.
I would like to see an interior guy who can play several spots in the mid-late rounds. Maybe a guy with some upside, small school type guy.

Nate Allen isnt Earl Thomas, but he can do a lot of the same things, and he's a much better tackler. If the price to move was that steep, I'd certainly be just fine settling with Allen later in the draft. Thomas and Allen are the two best fits for us...so I'd be happy with either. :D Not to mention, one thing always brought up about Allen is his maturity and his leadership ability. I dont know if you want to trust a rookie to call/relay your defense, but if he steps in for Hamlin, he'd probably have no problem doing so.

So basically you want every O-lineman we've drafted the past 4-5 years. How has that worked out so far?

I'm with MOTH on this. I'd be more then happy to stay put and pick up Nate.

LL turned me onto this guy, so I watched some tape, read some reviews and I am starting to see why many people think he will fit our scheme great.
Earl has a higher ceiling to me, but Nate Allen would give us a playmaking safety, even if he only turns out to be a solid, no pro-bowl, kind of player for years to come.
Who do you have targeted for round 2????

Right now I'm hoping for...
Day One: Safety
Day Two: O-Line, O-Line, (Houston if he's there ; maybe Corner)
Day Three: CB, FB, KR/PR, DE (some kind of combo here)

Congrats you picked one player out of a group that included; Jacob Rogers,Stephen Peterman, James Martin, Rob Petitti, Pat McQuistan, E. J. Whitley and soon to be added Robert Brewster.
It's very easy to say you want a "guy who can play several spots in the mid-late rounds. Maybe a guy with some upside, small school type guy" and then not mention a name. How about do some research and tell us a guy you like in the mid-late round and why you like him. Rather then just arbitrarily say you want a guy in a certain round to do this, that or another.
