I would cut off a finger if it brought Beltran back, too.

Arbitration-eligible Torres and Ramirez traded to Mets for Angel Pagan:
http://espn.go.com/newyork/conversat...ork-mets-moves
Not sure about this trade at all. Pagan is a CF, has base-stealing speed (8th in NL last year with almost 40 steals) and has hit leadoff, which are all needs for the Giants, BUT he reportedly doesn't like to hit leadoff (where all his value is), hasn't hit that great for average (.275 for career), has struggled in the outfield defensively (10 errors last year) and has a low baseball IQ (routinely missing cut off men on throws).
I know the Giants might have not tendered Torres as he was a one-season wonder but Ramirez was pretty solid out of the pen. I just think that they didn't have a spot for either in their 2012 plans so I'm fine with them being moved; I just don't know if they got much value in return. In Pagan, they fill some of their gaping needs a little, but he'll have to have a renaissance year for this to be a relevant move.
The move allows them to save a few bucks (tendering one player at around $3.5M instead of 2 players at around $5M total) and open a roster spot in the crowded bullpen for one of the younger (and cheaper) arms and they bring in a CF with more speed and leadoff experience to possibly make an impact.
It's noteworthy that Beltran was moved to RF in NY to make room for this guy in CF but I don't see how bringing in this former Met will help get Beltran back (if that was part of their thinking).
Most likely, this appears to be a lo-level trade that may not have much of an impact. I'm just hoping they can work on Pagan's D and that he'll want to hit leadoff and accept his role stealing bases.

I'm just happy that we got younger. Only thing that bugs me is Sabes said he wanted to offer Ramirez a deal but had to include him in the trade to make budget. While I applaud them for bumping payroll up to $130 million that comment and things like this tidbit from Extra Baggs make me worried about the Larry Baer Era:
Quote:
In the past, former managing partner Bill Neukom described the payroll as a placeholder. Sabean had the leeway to come to ownership and ask for a bump if he could justify spending it on a significant player.
Sabean said that understanding is not the current mode. There will be no special disbursements.
“Pure and simple, we’ve got to build in some contingencies because of arbitration,” said Sabean, who is likely to tender contracts to 10 arbitration-eligible players – including Tim Lincecum. “So the $130 (million) is more iron-clad. It has to be.”

Llllllllet's get ready to rumble! The Giants are going more offense or bust this year. I like their moves, including the trade they made to get rid of Stewart, making room for young power and speed in Hector, Sanchez Belt, Pill, and Blanco to help revitalize their lineup. Looking forward to a great season!

Belt is free!!!!!!! I'm with you Madirishman, pleased that the Whiteside/Stewart era is over. Giants catcher spot won't be a black hole in the lineup when Posey is resting or playing first.
Is it Friday yet?

i went to the game on monday and the crowd was going nuts every time Posey was up to bat.
Then they erupted when Wilson started warming up.
They're definitely ready for the season.

I love how the Giants are underrated, not getting respect this year. Everyone wrote them off when they didn't make the playoffs after winning the series. Fact of the matter is, they still won 86 games and used the DL more than any other team in baseball. Nothing went their way, they COULDN'T HIT and STILL were in the mix until the last week of the season. They're built to win in the playoffs so they just have to get there and they have a solid chance. I smell a sleeper!

Happy Opening Day! Hope they can start '12 off right by doing something they didn't last year - beat Ian Kennedy. Show him who has the real "BEARD!"
Good read and preview of Giants and their chances this year. Enjoy!

I went to all 3 games and they were all very disappointing..
The starting pitchers didnt seem very sharp like they have been in previous years but I'm not all that worried, yet.
Also, the ticket prices here in Arizona are dirt cheap compared to the prices back in San Fran.

We know the pitching will turn around and the hitting/speed are noticeably improved from last year. It's a long season and they lost three games on the road against a very good team by the least amount of runs possible to take losses. Not ideal but not a nightmare. Have faith gentlemen.

Giants were 55-9 when they scored 4 or more runs last season. Scored at least 4 runs in all 3 games and get swept, go figure. At least we have Zito, pitching in COL's thin air, to stop the Giants first 0-4 start since the 1950s.

Furthering the bizarre beginning of the season, the Giants win in Colorado 7-0 behind Zito's complete game shutout.
Yes, I said Zito's complete game shutout.
Cue the apocalypse....early.

Glad to see Brent (with his 6-fingered fapping) & MI are still up to their old tricks on this thread.....
What did you guys think of the Manningham signing? I was always a big fan of Josh Morgan & I think they're going to miss him in the slot. Will they draft another bigtime WR, like Stpehn Hill, as high as the 1st?
And big congrats to Zito & the Giants -- he pwns the Rockies!!! Love to give the stiff middle finger to the Rockies & Coors family (whose beer sucks)

Remarkable. Tom Glavine is the only other lefty to throw a complete game shutout at Coors. Also pleased with the game Hector Sanchez turned in. Huge upgrade over the black holes we had behind Buster the past year and half.

Yep, not looking good for B-Dub. Glad the FO brought back Affeldt and Lopez. Romo has closer stuff and Casilla could get the job done too. It's more of a fan loss than a team loss but you love to have the Beard out there in the 9th, though his velocity was alarmingly down. Moving forward, I "fear the Beard's" future as a Giant. Hembree has looked very impressive in the wings and I figured he'd start pressing Wilson for the closing job in 2013. Without him playing this year, the novelty will wear off a little and I believe fans will be more in favor of Wilson not being part of the team in the future. Hope it's not Tommy John for him.
