Nice. Do you think guys like Mustain and probably Corp for that matter thank god every day for Matt Cassel?

Strictly in terms of draft prospects, Mustain and maybe Corp would have been better served by transferring to a school where the HC viewed them as the savior of their program.
I don't think anyone believes there's a 3-4 win difference for USC if either Mustain, Corp, or Barkley starts. Actually the chances for success are likely greater with upperclassmen Corp and Mustain because of one's experience as a starter and Corp's greater time spent in Carroll's system.

But NFL scouts would have to be blind IMO not to recognize the talent both of them possess. It will hurt their draft status if neither ever starts for USC, but I wouldn't be surprised to see one or both of them picked by at least the 4th or 5th round whenever they come out.

USC/Pete Carroll is like that wealthy car collector who owns two dozen vintage sports cars but only drives a couple on a regular basis.

Doesn't mean that Maserati, Aston Martin, or Lotus still can't haul ass once you fill up the tank!!

I agree, in this case Barkley is probably the Maserati and the others more the Mustang GT types.

I probably would compare them more as higher and lower models of the same kind.

I find it very hard to believe any team would spend a 4th round pick on a quarterback who has never played college football.

Actually, after Matt Cassel, I don't think its that much of a stretch.

You yourself have seen GM's do stupid things because of their ego and the fact that its a copycat league. Without Devin Hester, would Ted Ginn have been picked at 9? Would Pat White really go in the second round if he had entered the year before, without the hype of the Miami Wildcat? And those are first round examples, why wouldn't a GM take a flier on a QB with name recognition from a program that has produced 5 NFL quarterbacks this decade with 3 of them starting.

Whether its smart or not is entirely up to debate, but in no way do I find it difficult to believe after seeing the past few drafts.

USC has done such a good job producing NFL type QBs as well. Even Leinart looks good when he is playing and he has been the most disappointing of the bunch.

That will certainly help the backups find opportunities in the NFL, in a way, they are better off not playing and possibly being exposed, if they can throw and test well at the combines/pro days they will have good stock. Both will eventually find homes and I would be surprised if they weren't both drafted to boot. Remember, New England Front Office guys now run half the teams in the league and they have shown consistently they will take unknown or unheralded players with picks.

Barkley looked good but McKnight was amazing today. I hope he can stay healthy and be a big part of this offense.

Slow start for McKnight but excellent finish. I've always been high on him.

Yeah, I know this is a Matt Barkley thread, who did look very un-freshman like in his USC debut, ( surprised he didn't find the endzone with the ball!!), but dang I love watching McKnight carry the rock.

Very little wasted movement when he jukes a defender; just a feint, slip, plant and go. Dude is too SMOOTH in the open field.

Barkley had the one TD to Ellison, it was a good safe game plan for him to pretty much throw high percentage stuff and hand off to a stable of RBs

Joe finally looked like he could live up to his billing as a Bush impersonator today.

Barkley was more efficient and capable than anyone could have asked. He's gonna be fine. Trojans will roll, they are stacked eerywhere.

Barkley and the USC offense looked good enough to crush my hope of OSU beating them this week. Barkley is gonna develop into a damn good QB.

The USC offense started real slow, but really picked it up. If Barkley can keep his composure on the road, the Trojans are going to rout the Buckeyes.
