Default 2009-2010 Titans Team Personel

I'm thinking since the majority of talk about the team is now getting shifted to which players should be retained, what areas should we be concerned about in the draft and what should happen with the coaching staff, maybe a new thread is in order to keep the 2009 Titans talk focused on the present instead of the future.

With that in mind, discuss gentlemen your ways to improve our beloved team

Great idea for a thread. I'll just spew a little more of my take....

QB: This needs to be Kerry Collins last year here. I think we can all agree on that. Vince Young is the key here. I don't think he's gotten a fair chance yet so far this season. I think he should start for the rest of the year. However, I do believe that in those starts he'll show he's not the answer either. While I'd like to believe we will get a fresh start here next season, I just have a hard time seeing Bud Adams signing off on giving up on Young.
HB: We're fine here. We have CJ and Ringer. Lendale can be let go. Ahmard is fine even though he hasn't been as good this year. I can see us using a later draft pick on a guy like Brandon James who is more of a return specialist.
WR: Kenny Britt and Nate Washington are the only locks in this group to make the roster next year. Gage has disappeared and there is no depth to speak of. It sure would be great if we still had a second rounder this year so we could try for a guy like Golden Tate or Damian Williams. Alas.....
TE: Jared Cook is the future here even though he hasn't shown much this season. Let's hope he doesn't turn out to be another Troupe. Craig Stevens is good for special teams and blocking. Alge Crumpler is done after this year and he shouldn't have even made it this year to be honest. Bo Scaife is a free agent and at this point his future as a Titan is a toss-up. I'm leaning towards us letting him walk though. I'd love to see us nab a guy like Greg Boone later in the draft.
OL: We're fine at tackle. Leroy Harris is our starting center next year. Jake Scott is safe. if we can re-sign Amano for cheap I can see us bringing him back. We'll need to address interior depth, though.
DE: Jevon Kearse and KVB are gone after this season. Neither one is applying enough pressure and they're both on the wrong side of 30. William Hayes has potential. We'll find out if he's starting material for next year as he should be starting the rest of the way this year. Dave Ball is a good backup and Jacob Ford is nothing more than a situational rusher. This will be a top priority this offseason. I'd like to see Jason Jones get moved here if we draft a DT high enough.
DT: Tony Brown might be done after this season. The guy gets way too many careless penalties and hasn't provided enough push up the middle. Jovan Haye is invisible out there, but I don't see them cutting him after one year for whatever reason. Sen'Derrick Marks should get more looks for the rest of this season to see what his future holds. Jason Jones is solid, but I've already touched on him. Kevin Vickerson might be done after this season as I can see him being easily replaced.
LB: Another top priority this offseason. Keith Bulluck is more than likely playing his last season as a Titan. He's lost a step. David Thornton has too, but I'm not sure if the Titans will deservedly cut him considering the turnover this defense is already facing. Tulloch could be re-signed for cheap. But should we? I'd like to see McRath and Keglar get more looks down the road for the rest of this season. Hopefully at least one of those two will be able to step in next season.
CB:Finnegan is fine, he just needs to stay healthy. Harper is done, and we held on to him a season too long. McCourty and Mouton haven't looked good so far, but they are rookies and they are working without much of a pass rush. I still don't really see them as starters though. I'd like to see a veteran signed to start opposite of Finny.
S: Hope and Griffin need mulligans after this season. They were pro bowlers last season and they are still young. I think they just need more consistent pass rush and corner play and coaching. Fuller is a good backup and a solid nickel back. Donnie Nickey has been around for forever and is mainly special teams.
K: Bironas is fine.
P: We're gonna have to bring in a new punter. Hentrich is done and Hodges blows.
KR: We need an upgrade here. Like I said earlier, I wouldn't mind us using a draft pick on a guy like Brandon James or Trindon Holiday. In fact I'd prefer it.
Coaching: The coordinators need to go. Offensive, defensive and special teams. The play-calling has been atrocious all the way around. It's also become predictable and has shown zero signs of adapting to adversity. It's clear the coaching staff needs some changes made. I'm just not sure Fisher will make them because of his loyalty. I'm not totally opposed to getting rid of Fisher either in the rare chance we can draft a new QB. In that case I'd probably actually prefer a new coach.

Looks like Jeff might not be here next year with all of this stuff coming out. If he leaves, so be it,I really dont think its all his fault. He will get a job elsewhere but I dont want him back. Its time for someone else to give it a go and I hope its someone who is commited to the offense, because I for one am tired of the stone-age gameplan we run.

I just wish we'd trade some of our bums. I'd prefer draft picks, but I wouldn't mind somehow pulling Quinn.

Ugh...I hope this team has nothing to do with Quinn. He's looked pretty terrible thus far in his career. Even worse than VY. Dude couldn't hold onto the starting gig with the Browns (who are about as bad as we are), which is enough for me to know that we shouldn't trade for him.

If anything, I'd like to see us make a move for Chiefs' DT Glen Dorsey. He doesn't fit their 3-4 scheme at all. He's under-performed thus far; however, I think Washburn could coach him up (in fact, other than Munchak, Washburn's about the only Titans coach that I have faith in). We could play him in the middle and move Jason Jones to the outside.

Here's a short blurb from GoTitans.com about Fisher's future with the Titans...

http://www.gotitans.com/artman2/publ..._00_3013.shtml

Here's a snippet from Bud Adams:
When asked if replacing Coach Jeff Fisher was an option, Adams said: "If we end up losing every game or don't look better, I'd have to look at that pretty hard, you know what I mean? The way it is going, I don't know if we'll win any games, and that is unheard of in the National Football League."

So...basically, Adams won't replace Fisher mid-season (which I can somewhat understand). However, he also suggests that it would take us losing EVERY single game to replace the coaching staff. Are you kidding me?!?! What if we finish 2-14 or 3-13??? You're telling me that the coaches should hold onto their jobs because they weren't perfectly terrible (i.e. the 2008 Lions)?!?!

Quinn has been bad, but I think that has more to do with his surroundings in Cleveland and bad coaching than his talent level.

SUH SUH SUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Our whole front 7 needs revamping and we need a new style on offense. We play like we are in the 60's

I would take Quinn, considering I think he is more the product of a lack of support in Cleveland. I mean the best option he had out there was an ineffective WR in Brandon Edwards and a special teams star/mediocre WR in Josh Cribbs.

You know who came to my mind with this whole dilemma of this possibly being Jeff Fisher's last year? Tony Dungy. Yes, Tony Dungy who helped create the empire of our main rivals, the Colts. I think he would be an absolutely perfect replacement if we could convince him to come out of retirement and pay him the large sum he would want. I don't think Shanahan would be a good fit, and Cowher either. Dungy runs the Tampa-2, which we have used a lot, and can switch to from the 4-3 a lot easier then switching to a 3-4. Couldn't really think of any big college coaches I would think could make the jump to the pros, considering you would probably have to find one that runs a pro style offense.

In regards to the draft, I am still caught up in what we should do should we have the option of going with either McCoy/Suh or Berry. Berry is easily the BPA in the draft right now, but McCoy/Suh are the need picks and are also quite the impact player. They both will easily fit into our scheme and don't need to be made into nose tackles, while Berry will probably need to make a transition to cornerback. Yet there is a lot more flexibility with Berry. If he cannot produce at corner, you can flip him to safety (or if in the case that this actually isn't a fluke year for either Hope of Griffin you can move him there). If McCoy or Suh bust, there really isn't much to do other then move them to DE and see if they can stick. So many damn questions here.

Also, bringing up Glenn Dorsey is quite an interesting idea. Yet I think a 3rd rounder this year would do it (considering the Bears gave up a 2nd to get Gaines Adams just this past week).

Dorsey has been playing well for the Cheifs right now so I would be all for it. Unforunally it wont happen because he is one of their best players right now.

That Fisher has no faith in VY? He is an older coach and has faith in his veterans, and after the way Kerry performed last season, who could blame him. I can agree that they did become complacent, didn't target anyone in FA other then Nate Washington, even with the sizable cap room we have. We need to go out and improve our d-line, and someone like Kampman would be perfect, even though a long term deal would be absolutely wrong. Peppers would be even more perfect, but who am I kidding, he wouldn't come here.

For the rest of the college season I'm going to try and check out as much of Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Jake Locker and Jimmy Clausen as possible. I've already got EB on lock being a Vol fan. I might throw in Carlos Dunlap and Greg Hardy as much as I can, too.

What about the Packers' AJ Hawk? He just has been unable to reproduce the numbers he had his rookie season, and is slowly being phased out right now. Maybe trade Ball or Ford (one of the DE's that loses out the battle to start next year) for him?

EDIT: Also don't know how I can keep track of other potential players. At this moment Suh, McCoy and Berry have to be atop our draft board (in no specific order). I have to see me some Suh, cause reading all these reports of how special he is is something. "Best DT since Warren Sapp"? That's saying a lot.

And yes, still don't got QB as a concern just yet.

Heard Chris Mortenson talking about the Titans on ESPN radio last night...

For what it's worth, he basically said that -- even though Bud Adams has said he'll review Jeff Fisher's status at the end of the season -- there's VERY little chance that Fisher is replaced this offseason. First, because Adams has a good personal relationship with Fisher. Second, because Fisher has about $14 million left on his contract and it's unlikely that Adams would want to eat that salary AND pay a new coach.

So...basically...looks like Fisher will be around again next year.
Hopefully, though, we can get new Coordinators.

We have one. His name is Vince Young.

Ah, to still have hope, even though its fading away. Clean house with the coordinators though, go into the college ranks even like we did with Norm Chow.

All i have to say is VY never got a chance to play with Cj who takes so much stress off the passing game.. Give him a chance to play with this squad instead of basing him off of his rookie and 2nd year squads.

Although I don't get to see many titan games, I have to agree with the last post. Maybe he is not the long term answer, and I know he has had off field issues (although I doubt I have heard all of them). But at some point, you have to play him. Right??? What is the point of not playing him at this point? Do any of the die hard Titans fans really want to see Collins for the rest of the year?

I dont think VY ever got a fair shake. I agree that he never got to play with CJ, but I also don't think a ton of help has been brought in to assist him at wide out. I would not be scared of any of the Titans receivers if I was coming up with a game plan against the Titans. Just play VY for the rest of the season. If he shows you he can still play, then go draft the guy some playmakers. There are a few coming out this year that would help alot.

And on a side note-reading all of the "Whole sale" talk makes me sad. I am not saying it is due, but I don't want to think of a Titans defense without Bullock. He is one of my favorite players in all of NFL. He is such a stud, I would take him on my team any year.

And the sad point of this post is that the hope is fading while Young is on the bench. PLEASE PLAY VINCE YOUNG?

I want to see Young starting the rest of the way as well. I'm open to changing my mind about him I just don't have a whole lot of faith in him personally just because I've never been attached to him and I've always admittedly said we should have drafted Leinart ( Oops :D ). But anyways, trust me, I'm rooting for VY to succeed as much as the next guy, maybe even more, it's just I'd like to find out what he has the rest of this season so we don't end up passing on some potentially good draftees this next draft.

VY and his agent have said that they're willing to restructure his deal in order to stay in Tennessee. His cap hit is set to be something fierce, so this is a great gesture on VY's part.

Gotta admit, he is doing whatever he can to stay part of here. I love it cause I was adamant about drafting him, give him an honest chance, evn though next year is probably more realistic considering that the gameplan is going to be changed with new coordinators.
