Default Week 6 write up

Week 6 Thoughtses

Tennessee is a sunken, not sinking, sunken ship
This team looks night and day worse than it did last year and appears to be in major need of an overhaul, at least at the quarterback position. Kerry Collins and Vince Young combined for nineteen plays from scrimmage that resulted in the grand totals of -19 yards and 3 turnovers. Is it any wonder this team is yet to win a game? Kerry Collins is not the answer and although teams tend to stick with first round picks, especially ones paid so highly and so highly regarded it's becoming painfully obvious that he cannot play the quarterback position. Yeah he had a decent few games as a rookie and has had some nice plays in the preseason, but he just looks lost in the NFL and the Titans need someone at the position to start producing if they're to win games. Needless to say there is a myriad of issues on the defense and much of that is due to the loss of Albert Haynesworth who until the final few weeks of last season was a major leader in the MVP stakes and it appears he just might have been the MVP of the Titans unit, with respect to Johnson of course.

New Orleans Saints are the best team in the NFC
New Orleans are beginning to set themselves apart in the NFC and it's clear that at this stage at least they're legitimate contenders for the super bowl this year. They seemed to handle the understrength New York teams in all facets of the game and appear to be markedly improved over last year. The offense has topped forty points in three out of five games this year and it's clear that there aren't many defenses in the league who could stifle the offense which is being executed to perfection by the best quarterback in the NFL not named Brady or Manning.

Undefeated Team Watch
Denver: The broncos remind me of a team, that in the 2003/4 season made it to the playoffs, beat everyone and ended up losing a superbowl. They're playing tight knit football a year removed from massive internal strife across the board and on Monday night beat a very strong divisional opponent in dominant fashion. I don't think there's anyone questioning whether or not this team will have a winning season after their strong start, I think the question now is just how far can they go? Next opponent: BYE

Indianapolis: Not much to add this week, except that next week the Colts get to have a tune up game against the St Louis Rams which should help Anthony Gonzalez get back into form with Peyton Manning. When the Colts defense is better than terrible this team goes deep into the playoffs and this year it looks like the Colts just might be a lot stronger than any team other than New England when on song or maybe the Broncos if they play a perfect game, if the defense can stay healthy and Peyton can stay sharp they'll be in for a shot at the silverware yet again this season. Next game: St Louis

New Orleans:
See Above Next opponent: Miami

Minnesota:
The win was impressive, but it was also a little lucky in the way that there was a big completion and a missed field goal to secure a win. The Vikings have a very strong unit defensively and offensively but the play calling has to be better from Brad Childress and the defense needs to finish opponents when the team is in position to do so. The scoreline doesn't really show it, but this game shouldn't have been anywhere near as close as it was and it's testament to either just how good the Ravens are becoming offensively or just how bad the Vikings defense is, time will tell which is the case. Next Opponent: Pittsburgh

Homer Corner
Another week and another game almost thrown away by Jake Delhomme. Poor throws resulted in an extremely pissed off steve smith and almost a game losing turnover to Tanard Jackson on sunday marking yet another game overcome by everyone else on the Carolina unit. If the proof wasn't well and truely out there before it has to be painfully obvious now, Jake Delhomme is no longer competitive in the NFL. My question is why in the hell hasn't he been yaneked in favor of Matt Moore? Moore showed he can lead the team back in 2007 and although he was unspectacular in time since he's the only one of the two with a legitimate future in the NFL. Besides which, how much worse can it get, right now 50% of passes going where they should and two INTs for every TD isn't exactly lofty stats to beat.

Williams and Stewart form the best running back tandem in the NFL (or close to it) and the defense since acquiring Hollis Thomas has really stepped up in the past two weeks. Please Fox, for the sake of your job, find a solution...

Matt Schaub love
I watched a lot of Matt Schaub when he played sparingly in Atlanta and I was one of the few believers when he left for Houston that he could be a legitimate NFL starter. It seems the light has finally come on, which may be due to his health, his supporting cast, the offensive line, whatever, because right now he's among the best statistically in the NFL. In fact, he's leading the NFL in touchdowns, is second in yardage and boasts a QB rating over over 100. Schaub is the complete package, he can run and make all the throws but the good news for Texans fans is he's still just 28 years old and entering his third year in the Texans offense. Looks like Al Groh knows what he's doing in Virginia.

Other stuff
Andy Reid needs to call more run plays, and I think that's the most over repeated sentiment to do with the NFL year in and out.

Zach Miller is quietly becoming one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Every Oakland game I've watched he comes up big in various situations and finishes blocks when asked to participate in the run game. the most impressive aspect of his touchdown on the weekend wasn't the catch or the pass, it was vision which allowed him to find and exploit blockers on his way to a long touchdown.

I don't blame Shanahan for turning down the Washington Job and it looks like he might just agree with my feeling on Dan Snyder.

Thomas Jones is likely the most unheralded productive running back in the NFL. He has gained over 1,000 yards the last four seasons and is likely to eclipse the 10,000 yard mark early next year. Not bad for a guy who teams seem to constantly try to replace.

Ray Rice has more receiving yards than Anquan Boldin.

I agree comepletly about Zach Miller. He is becoming a good TE that can block and catch. Once Russell or who ever our QB gets settled, I expect him to be able to get be in pro bowl disscusions.

The Titans defensive woes can't just be summed up as losing Albert. There are other factors which have coincided with this loss to create the crap D they are showcasing, which collectively impact a lot more IMO.

Firstly, Chuck Cecil is a rookie DC who looks to be in way over his head. Apparently the Titans were front runners for Greg Williams but didn't want to hire his son, which was a requirement on his end. Nice one guys!

Next, KVB, Kearse, Bulluck, Hope and Harper have all lost a step and are on their down slope.

And lastly, the recent injuries to the CB position, which has seen all 3 starting spots (considering NB as a starting spot on the Titans D) removed from the lineup at once, have multiplied the problems. Just about every D in the league is significant injuries for both starting corners and the prefered nickelback away from having major pass D issues.

I agree with what you're saying but you've got to acknowledge that KVB, Kearse and Bulluck are all hindered by not having that big space inside them being eaten by such a dominant player.

You've got a point that they've lost a step but more likely is it's a step they didn't ever really have without him there.

I want to know why the Buccaneers didn't sign Hollis Thomas. Even as a stop gap solution he would have done a good job preventing us from giving up nearly 300 rushing yards.

I'm happier we traded for Tank Tyler from The Chiefs, he's going to be good in our system with the guys around us. Next year we'll be solid at the position with Leonard, Tyler, Kemoeatu and Lewis as well.

Before his big game against Philly, I was wondering how much money Miller would get when he hits FA. It's always been obvious he's been a very talented player in a dreadful orginization. What I was really thinking is how much money do you think he's lost by not being able to show his full potential? He's still going to get paid and paid well, but probably not up to the amount he probably could if he was playing with a good team right now.

I'm not a Jets fan, but it's about time someone recognizes Thomas Jones. The guy is always productive regardless of where he goes or who he plays with or against.

He's been pretty good for 4-5 years now on some mediocre teams (are the Jets still considered good or just average now? :P) and while he's not dominate, he's still has been unheralded for his work which has consistently been above the league's average.

The Jets were considered good, but Sanchez after starting strong early has seriously faded. Without Jenkins, they're just average, possibly below average.

Ive been on the Zach Miller bandwagon for 2 years now. He'd be a great player on a competent team.

Ive also been a fan of Schaubs, and was disappointed in how his career was shaping out in Houston, but he's finally hitting on all cylinders. I initially thought that Atlanta made a huge mistake letting him go, but it looks like it worked out well for both teams since they landed Matt Ryan.

The universe seems to be resigned to seeing him go, I love him as a coach, but for some unbeknown reseason he just doesn't seem to want or be able to develop a young QB

Ray Rice's name should just be a link to that post any time it is used on SWDC. We need someone to get on that asap.

I know his devotion to rutgers isn't the only devotion to rutgers, but scotty's the kind of guy who just might drug and rape Leonard or Rice if he ever were to meet them, say at a bar, in real life. You just can't match that.

Yeah I've met some Rutgers players and I never did that. Good thing I never told Scotty where they were.

I saw Philip Rivers at a restaurant last Thursday. What would you have done in that situation. I wanted to say something but felt bad. He was with his wife and 4 kids.

I was one of the few people who liked Miller more than Greg Olsen before the draft that year. I think Miller would be so much better if he was on a better team.

Always wondered why Bama passed on a home state player with the size & the big arm like Rivers, hey, Texas passed on Drew Brees & he won a state championship right there in freaking Austin. Even with his freaky sidearm throwing motion Rivers was too obvious, oh well, some see forest, others see trees.

What was this thread about? Oh yes, more Wk. 6 observations....

The Jets have dropped 3 in row, Sanchez is throwing INTs right & left & even Rex Ryan's uberego is deflated. Is it stick a fork in the Jets time yet?

Yes and no, Sanchez little regression is understandable. After a few weeks, teams gather film, intel, talk between themselves a little bit and learn how to rattle and defeat players.

Sanchez just needs to relax, obviously there's a lot of support for him within the organisation and he'll click back into grove fairly soon, but for now it's common for rookies to struggle mid way through the year and usually toward the end of their second year. I always thought he was a 2-3 year project at the NFL level anyway, and it's obvious the Jets weren't all that close to the window just yet anyway.

imo, give him another few games, once the temp drops and the running game fires up he'll start turning in better games and the jets will start winning again.

They weren't in the same draft were they?
