True dat.
Luck is always a factor (and not an excuse).
The way the ball bounces, the posts, the lucky deflections, richochets, funny bounces, and calls by the refs are a legitimate factor in many outcomes.

Switzerland did an amazing (if not a bit lucky) job of keeping Spain out of the net. Spain looked really sharp, even though they lost. Crisp passing and lots of chances. However, it's gonna be a fight to advance now with Chile and Switzerland 2 points ahead.

The only thing that will salvage my day is if South Africa wins. Bravo to the Swiss though.

A favorite to win the Cup goes down in their first game of group play.
Yep, the WC/soccer sure isn't exciting...

I told everyone I know beforehand, don't expect the swiss to be pushovers. They aren't technically gifted, but they'll work their ass off plugging holes and Benaglio is a very underrated goalie. Spain just didn't play well today: Silva didn't do much right and Torres and Villa weren't very effecitve.

would you believe me if I said Spain's loss wasn't shocking to me? I haven't seen a lot of Spain, but from what I have seen when someone does get a counter attack on them they kind of struggle (US last year, Swiss today), and when a team packins in the D, Spain doesn't really have people willing to take longer shots. I think the set play off the corner in the 2nd half was the only shot outside the 20 Spain took.

Congrats to Swiss.
Wow, it would be a MAJOR choke job if Spain doesn't at least reach the semis imo.

I wouldn't say Spain didn't play well.
They actually played very well, with a few breakdowns in back. They just couldn't finish to save their lives. I don't think it would have been 1-0 Swiss if Torres had started, however. From what I've read, he appeared very rusty when he came on.
Also, I have to give a lot of credit to Benaglio, who played seemingly an amazing game. Way to keep your team in it, buddy.

Going into the game I felt as if Gelson Fernandes and Inler were the most overlooked midfielders in this tournament. None of the 'experts' on the TV even mentioned them. I loved Inler's play two years ago at the EC and he's really come into his own since. Great player and a true asset. Benaglio is also very underrated.
And about Spain's performance, it wasn't very good IMO. Sure, they dominated the Swiss on a technical level, but they were completely ineffective whenever the neared the goal. Torres wasn't sharp and save for that awesome shot on the crossbar, they hardly created any real shots on goal. Most shots went over the goal, wide or nowhere at all. Villa's play was horrendous, that lob in the first half made no sense, he should have buried it and Silva played more like a swiss flank defender than a spanish winger at times. They looked good passing the ball around the way they did, but it led to nothing, until the 70th minute there was no sense of urgency in their play. A truly arrogant and uninspired performance.
Again I reference the game between teh Netherlands and Denmark, because it was very similar. Nobody expected a frivolous feast for the eyes, but the Dutch, as horrible as they played and as ugly as the game looked, got the job done. Spain played a similar opponent and did not. Shame on them.

I couldn't watch the game, but outside of finishing was there anywhere else Spain looked poorly?
I mean, they dominated the game in possession to the tune of almost having the most successful passing % in the history of the WC, had double digit chances to score, didn't really concede much outside of a few Swiss attacks. Was there somewhere else they did poorly besides finishing?
If finishing was their only problem, then I'd say that's a pretty good game. From all I've heard, they looked great except in scoring. Obviously that's the most important part, but just because they couldn't finish doesn't mean they necessarily played bad.
I don't think the Netherlands looked nearly as good as Spain supposedly did, but that may be a matter of opinions.

The whole standards (free kicks and corners) were poorly executed by Spain

they also did a fairly poor job tracking back on D. Yeah the Swiss goal had luck involved, but the leadup was nothing fancy; long ball by goaling, Swiss win a header, get it to the forward and have a 2 man attack going. There were a couple other good chances the Swiss got from long balls into a counter attack.

Wow, Khune got a red card for that? I'm not an avid soccer fan but have been watching the tournament pretty closely. That look of anguish on Suarez's face when Khune ever so gently grazed his foot just makes him look like a huge *****. I guess good job selling it though.

As a goalkeeper, I am disgusted with that red card.

It's understandable. Any time someone gets knocked down by the last defender, it's a red card. From the angle the ref had, Khune came in very late and had no shot at the ball and Suarez fell over.

Spain played extremely well apart from the final third. Fantastic display of passing, good defense (apart from one breakdown) and a **** load of chances. I agree with GOW that their crosses/free kicks weren't up to par, but they should have had 4 or 5 goals if they could finish. They got a bit unlucky in this game.

It is definitely a foul, maybe even a yellow, but that was a scam of a red card. He barely touched the mother ******. If that **** happened to me, I would not be leaving the field quietly, that is for sure.

It's ALWAYS a red card when the last defender commits a foul to prevent a goal. It's a weak foul, and Suarez might not have scored, but you have to call it.
