Casey Hampton is going to get tagged, but it hasn't been announced yet.

Green Bay Packers placed their franchise tag on DT Ryan Pickett. The DT franchise tag is $7 million. Pickett not going anywhere.

So that's four 3-4 NTs that have been tagged.
What happens if there is a fifth? How does the top 5 salaries get worked out?

All tag numbers are determined by the salaries from the past season.

For the non-exclusive tag it is, for the exclusive rights franchise it's the top five at a certain pre-determined day this year

Apologies if this has been posted before but here are the franchise and transition tag values for 2010.
CORNERBACK: $9.566 million (franchise), $8.056 million (transition)
DEFENSIVE END: $12.398m, $10.193m
DEFENSIVE TACKLE: $7.003m, $6.353m
LINEBACKER: $9.680m, $8.373m
OFFENSIVE LINE: $10.731m, $9.142m
PUNTER/KICKER: $2.814m, $2.629m
QUARTERBACK: $16.405m, $14.546m
RUNNING BACK: $8.156m, $7.151m
SAFETY: $6.455m, $6.011m
TIGHT END: $5.908m, $5.248m
WIDE RECEIVER: $9.521m, $8.651m
Does anyone know why DEs and DTs are listed separately while all Offensive Linemen are lumped together? Seems a bit unfair on the DTs when guards and centers can benefit from the salaries of Left Tackles (Not that any team would fork out $10.731m for an interior lineman).
I believe July 22 is the deadline date for franchise players to be traded or sign a long term deal.
Take Vince Wilfork for example.
If Wilfork is still unsigned after July 22nd:
1. He can only sign for the Patriots in 2010.
2. He would not be able to sign a long-term deal - only a 1-year deal with the Pats for the DT franchise player amount of $7.003m.
Under such a scenario Wilfork and the Patriots would only allowed to start talking again about a long-term contract once the the 2010 regular season has been completed.

It's only a couple million and we are working on a long term contract with him.

83.3 kicking percentage is great. When half those kicks are in Pittsburgh thats outstanding.

He's also clutch. Yeah he's a little bit of a douchebag and a drunk, but he's one of the better kickers in the league and possibly the only kicker I'd trust with the game on the line in Pittsburgh.

I think that if a team tenders an offer to a restricted free agent or tags a guy they should have to take out a massive insurance policy in the players name in case they suffer an injury that limits their ability to to play in the future. That always seems to be the argument, wanting financial stability, so the team buys a policy and the player is covered to some extent. It doesn't seem fair to essentially force a guy to sign a contract that he isn't comfortable with. It's almost comparable to a form of indentured servitude in some lights.

Which is pretty much what the draft does as well. After a player finishes his rookie contract it is the first time he really has any say in where and with whom he wants to play and the franchise tag stops them from doing that. Plus it opens up the possibility of being traded somewhere you don't want to go, look at all the **** people gave Peppers last year when he dared to list the 4 teams he would go to.
