You can't compete with an infield THAT bad.

It's bad. But the infield listed earlier I don't think will be the infield that actually plays. Not sure who else is available but I bet someone else is signed. They obviously won't be great but it's competition. Also I think Nunez will play 3B.

I tend to agree. It is awful right now.

However, despite there being a ton of ifs, if they can sneak into playoffs and the pitching breaks right (Tanaka is a stud, CC's down year was just a blip, Kuroda's poor second half also a blip), they could easily ride those 3.

Plus, they are back to not giving a flying **** about money. You have to think they'll continue throwing money and prospects around to improve the IF.

Headley could be available for some of our outfield prospects?

Nunez is even worse than any of those options. He's incredibly awful.

Is it that time of the year again where we overrate Yankee prospects?

That doesn't have anything to do with the strees and mileage Japanese kids put on their arms at such a young age. I don't think any American teenagers were throwing 750+ pitches in two days in the fifties or sixties. It has nothing to do with pitch counts in the major leagues. It has everything to do with the added chance that your arm will get injured the more stress you put on it at a young age.

They have one of the best outfields in the game and one of the best hitting catchers in the game. They can absolutely compete if they pitch well.

They also have Brendan Ryan who's obviously nothing on offense but will solidify SS if Jeter can't go. Plus he'll play there when Jeter DHs.

Plus if Tex is healthy they're only really weak at one spot.

Where is that proof? I mean it seems logical, but where is the actual proof. Kuroda is still pitching well enough. I read some of that article and while it may be cruel to treat a teenager that way, where is the correlation with arm injury?

There is none. Nobody has the capacity to predict arm injury....it is, at this point, more or less random.

Research and studies...

Quote:
A 1996 survey conducted by the USA Baseball Medical & Safety Advisory Committee (USA Baseball News, 1996) showed that most experts believed pitch counts should be kept for youth pitchers as well. In response to this charge, the committee sponsored an epidemiological study by the ASMI to look at this issue. This study -- published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine in 2002 -- showed a significant relationship between the number of pitches thrown and the risk of shoulder and elbow pain in youth baseball. It is the opinion of ASMI and the USA Baseball Medical & Safety Advisory Committee that joint pain indicates the early development of a potentially serious joint injury. Thus, pitch count limits are recommended for youth baseball. If -- for some valid reason -- a league is unable or unwilling to enact pitch count limits, the league should limit the number of batters faced.

The players in question are all past youth baseball now.

That's a crazy deal for the Yankees. Not sure it'll work out for them, but worth the risk.

Anyways, I'm getting excited for the new season. Pitchers and catchers report in less than 3 weeks.

Tanaka missed some of 2012 with shoulder soreness which I would find worrying considering this opinion.

Regardless, I'd be shocked if you could find a doctor who says it's smart for a pitcher to throw 750+ pitches as a teenager and 160 followed by a bullpen session in two day and that it doesn't increase the risk of injury.

$155 million and they didn't have to give up prospects or draft picks as compensation? Some of you guys are overreacting.

If he gets injured, he gets injured. As Rob said, it's all random. Who would've known that Jamaal Charles would stay healthy this season with the workload he had? It's not like his mechanics are screwed up.

Surprised he got a major league deal, though for sure he'd be a minor league flier.

How could anyone be excited about signing Grady Sizemore as anything more than a hotdog vendor?

I always liked Sizemore. I understand that the guy has been on the DL more than Pavano or Prior but for 750k and the slightest possibility that he can perform has me excited.

Considering we are going into the season penciling Bradly into CF with really no other choice if he stinks helps me see the benefit of having Sizemore in the mix.
