The Diamondbacks have agreed to sign free agent starter Bronson Arroyo, guaranteeing the veteran $23.5MM in total. Arroyo will earn $9.5MM each in 2014 and 2015, and the club has a $11MM option for 2016 that comes with a $4.5MM buyout.
What is that one player you expect to break out this year? For the Pirates, I say Starling Marte. He's in his second full season and it wouldn't surprise me if he makes an Andrew McCutchen type of jump.
I would say Danny Duffy, but the ******* Royals are putting him in the pen so Bruce ******* Chen can start. The #5 for the Royals is looking to be between Hochevar, Wade Davis, Brad Penny, and Yordano Ventura. I have very little faith that they'd let Ventura have it over those juggernauts.
For the Braves I'll go with Andrelton Simmons and Alex Wood.
Simmons is already the best defensive SS in the bigs, but I think he could take a step forward offensively and be an average hitter at SS. If he can become an above average offensive player, he'd become the best SS in the game. I think he'll fall just short of that this year and be merely one of the best.
Alex Wood might not even hold on to his rotation spot if Floyd and Beachy are both healthy in May, but if he does, I think he'll continue to surprise people and be a great SP. He's an injury risk with his funky delivery, but it's certainly been effective.
