Of course. And to the same degree the playoffs are a different animal, the the 9th inning of the playoffs are a different animal for Derek Jeter. He suddenly is able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound.

Right Mr. Advanced Stats?

What? The playoffs are a crap shoot, even your GM acknowledges this.

I regret never seeing him play. Arguably the best pure hitter since Ted Williams.

RIP Tony.

I only caught the tail end of his career, but even that was awesome to watch.

He was the Greg Maddux of hitting, he could hit the ball where he wanted.

Speaking of, Gwynn faced Maddux 107 times in his career. Tony hit .415 and didn't strike out once

In 1995, he struck out just 15 times in 577 Plate Appearances

remarkable hitter

In 10,000 + AB across 20 seasons he struck out 434 times, which is less than some players have in two seasons.

Making my first trip to Wrigley on Friday for the opening of the Pirates series. First road game of the season, and one of the destinations I've been dying to get to. This'll take care of all of the NL Central Parks for me.

I know we belittle batting average but this is a really cool statistic about Gwynn. He actually hit .400 over a 162 game stretch that encompassed the 1994 strike season.

Well this game got out of hand REALLY fast.

But that's what happens sometimes when you are forced to give you 9th starter a bunch of starts.

As for Gwynn, it is terrible to hear of his passing. He was truly studly. That man could use the bat in a way very few can.

And suddenly there's a little more intrigue to the game. Not that I trust anyone the A's could bring in as a stopper right now. And it would be stupid to bring in one of their key relievers.

Matt Adams is on a tear right now. And Jon Jay is starting to hit like he did before last season. The team looks to be finally putting it all together.

Now that I say that, they'll lose 3 straight.

Tony Gwynn's death causes me to question why we as humans and maybe specifically Americans choose to do things that harm us.

At the time Gwynn broke into the big leagues, I don't believe we knew about the possible effects of chewing tobacco, but here we are in 2014 and still about 30% of major leaguers chew.

In no way am I saying Gwynn is responsible for his own death, please don't get me wrong. It's tragic that he ended up suffering of cancer of the mouth.

But tragic stories mean nothing to the masses unless we learn something from them. And here we are and we still see young people take up smoking, chewing is still prevalent in America and we choose to clog our arteries with fried and fatty foods.

We are poisoning our own bodies, playing Russian roulette because we like the flavor or the experience. Or maybe we just aren't mature enough as a race to make sacrifices of things we find enjoyable in order to experience greater benefits in the long term.
