Would he give Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka? How about Alfonso Soriano for Brad Wilkerson or give Chan Ho Park a 5 year, $65M dollar and proclaim him to finally be that ace they were so desperately looking for...? hahaha. If Minaya had brought Johan Santana to Texas, he'd be a God.

Except Minaya only ever got flashes of the Santana in Minnesota. Plus Daniels brought you maybe the leagues MVP and Cliff Lee. LIke you said not all GMs only make good moves. But some definitely make more than others. If you don't think Daniels is important, there are a ton of other teams that would love to take him off your hands.

Umm it was leaked after the Mets already made a hire. Again how would that impact Daniels getting more money when the team he would use as a "ploy" already hired someone. It makes 0 sense.

It's nice to see others being jealous. It really is.
Go Daniels! Go Rangers!

...and by saying he was interested in the Mets makes the Rangers feel less comfortable about their chances to sign him for cheap. Thus, driving up the price. If no one was interested in Daniels and Daniels was not interested in even giving thought to leaving, then Texas would have more comfort in offering him a cheaper contract.

What you're saying now is correct but it has nothing to do with what you originally said. You said Daniels had no interest in really becoming Mets GM and that his agent had made up the fact that Daniels asked the Mets through back channels to wait so they could interview him. That would not drive the price up since it came out after we already made a hire. Yes the previous stuff could have driven the price up but that's not what the original argument was about. You're debating something totally different from where we started. Of course I know an agent would want to cause a bidding war with a franchise that is desperate and would be willing to spend big money but that's not what happened in this situation. The original media speculation made sense but we did not have any corraboration from anyone related to Daniels including his agent until after it didn't matter anymore.

Reread what I said. I didn't say it wasn't true. I just said I don't think there is any substance to it. Sure, Daniels may have inquired. I didn't deny that. Doesn't mean he wanted the job. By inquiring, he relays the exact message that he wanted to relay to the Rangers that he's not an easy sign. That's ole agent game I was talking about. Even if this news comes out after the fact, it sends a message to the Rangers that Daniels is going to look out for his best interests too... whether that is with the Rangers or not. If you ask the posters at DC, Daniels apparently would be loved by many teams. Not just the Mets. hah.

In the end, I think Ibanez for a third year and $10.5mm will prove to be a better value than the 5 year, $80mm guaranteed deal that Werth will sign. Werth will be a bigger anchor on his next team by the end of the deal than Ibanez will be next year. And Ibanez will be a monster anchor next year. The only redeeming aspect is that he will be done in Philly after 2011. An aging Werth has 2 good years left, then he's due to decline. All those years catching + the fact that he's 6'6" + the fact that his speed will go down, thereby reducing his fielding efficiency and his value on the bases means that his big contract will be tough to swallow long term.
