After further research, I found out the money doesn't start coming in until 2013... or is it 2015? I forget.

Regardless, it wasn't the money that kept the Rangers out of the race. ...and that was what people were claiming the Rangers shortcomings would be.

Seemed to me like the Rangers didn't get Lee because a) they didn't represent the place where Lee most wanted to go(obviously Philly and b) they couldn't offer the most money

Seems like the Rangers were a distant third to be honest.

You must not have been following this accurately then. The Yankees were out before the Rangers. ...and money wasn't what Lee wanted most.

...and Jon Daniels said if the Rangers offered a 7 year deal that Lee would be a Ranger.

Pirates signed Lyle Overbay to a one year deal. He'll hit a lot of doubles that could be homers in PNC and play good defense. Not flashy, but I like it. Hopefully they go out and sign one more starter.

I wanted to point something out. Lee actually got $120 million over 5 years, not the originally reported $100 million. That's $24 million per year, which is the highest per season salary of any pitcher and more money per season than either the Yankees or Rangers offered. The deal also includes a $27.5 million vesting option for a sixth year. The option vests if he pitches 200 innings in 2015 or 400 innings between 2014 and 2015. So if he stays healthy in that last year this is a 6-year, $147.5 million deal. That's by far the best deal he was offered.

Anyone surprised that the Yankees offer was really the worst of the three teams? Sure, they guaranteed him the most but both the Phillies and Rangers offered him a chance to make more money.

George Steinbrenner sure as hell would have been. Very odd for that organization. First time in awhile they've put all that energy into a guy and not come away with him.

Not really surprised there was more to the deal. Taking $20M instead of $23M or whatever the Yanks offered per year doesn't make much sense given that the chance at a WS was pretty much the same. But yeah, really surprising that the Yankees just didn't give him a blank check and say call us in a week.

I believe the Yankees eventually guaranteed his 7th year. With the 7th year I don't think either the Rangers or Phillies offered him a chance to make more money.

Yankees offered 7/$148
Rangers offered 6/$138 with a vesting option that could make the contract 7/$161
Phillies offered 5/$120 with a vesting option that could make the contract 6/$147.5 million.

Technically, the max value of the Yankees offer is $500,000 more than the max value of the Phillies offer. However, he'd have to play a whole extra year just to make that half million. If he's able to pitch in 2017, he's going to make more than $500,000.

I am a little suprised it was only 7/148. I figured it would be up closer to 160. I had not seen the exact figures.

Not only does that not rhyme, but it's absolutely devoid of any actual creativity or effort on your part.

That's understandable, but would you be willing to risk 27 million dollars on you being healthy enough to pitch a full MLB season five years down the road, at 37 years old?

Idk, it doesn't seem like he did it because ultimately it was a better deal financially, but because it provided the best situation for him and he didn't really give up all that much money either. I don't think he ever really considered New York, and used them more as leverage.

The insiders mistagged Lee if thats even a word. They had him as a guy who was looking for every last cent. Which they said was part of the reason why the Phillies traded him in the first place. But in the end he was never really that guy.

In some alternate reality where Prior doesn't kill his arm, this is the story of the offseason.
