The draft in baseball is so much different than in other sports. Until the recent CBA, teams were playing by Scott Boras' rules when it came to signing prospects. The problem was that small market teams decided they were not going to bow down to him, while big market teams decided that they would. As a result, you see Jered Weaver dropping to the Angels when he was one of the top 5 players in that draft. Not all of it is thanks to Boras, teams miss on talent evaluating just like any other sport. That's just for American players, international players is a different story.
Signing international prospects used to be a free-for-all (until the new CBA limited how much they could spend). The teams that built the best facilities overseas also got great players. That's how the Rangers became the powerhouse they are now, by building plenty of baseball facilities in the Dominican and other places. Getting talent works much differently in baseball.
Getting talent is one thing, developing players is the hardest part. There are some players who are so used to success, they have no idea what to do when they start failing. They could be hearing different things from different coaches so they would have no idea. It also takes several years for a prospect to make it to the majors, where that's a whole new ball game. The players have to constantly adjust.
And of course the most important variable, injuries. Pitchers get their careers cut short thanks to injuries, prospects get their development stalled. If they take too long, they will no longer be considered prospects.
There are way too many variables for rebuilding in baseball. The teams that suck at it pay for it.

Ned Yost has Mitch Maier on the bench, but uses Brayan Pena to pinch hit for Humberto Quintero... GTFO of town, Ned. GTFO!

Chris Getz is leading off tonight.
Getz
Gordo
Country Breakfast
Hos
Frenchy
Moose
Pena
Maier
Escobar
Getz has a .270 career OBP from that spot (.200 avg). A child could look at baseball-reference.com and figure out the lineup for this team.
Just going ot BR and checking each player's best spot in the lineup
Getz - 7th (.312/.356/.425) 9th is #2 (.283/.348/.319)
Gordon - 1st (.289/.371/.506) (2nd & 4th had decent numbers but small sample)
Butler - 3rd (.315/.368/.506) (5th was close)
Hosmer - 4th (.302/.331/.481) (5th was #2)
Francouer - 5th (.289/.330/.483) (easily)
Moustakas - 6th (.317/.361/.471) (easily with small samples from other spots)
Pena - 7th (.293/.320/.437) (easily his best)
Maier - 7th (.271/.346/.409) (Maier has the most experience in the #2 hole and doesn't have a terrible OBP there (.340), so he'll slip in there to allow everyone else to be in their ideal position in the lineup).
Escobar - 8th (.280/.333/.370) (easily)
So with the child making a lineup from BR using the players Ned's deciding to trot out there tonight (in slot OPS):
1. Gordon (.876)
2. Maier (.664)
3. Butler (.874)
4. Hosmer (.812)
5. Francouer (.813)
6. Moustakas (.832)
7. Pena (.758)
8. Escobar (.703)
9. Getz (.667)
That's pretty solid. How ******* hard was that? And if you don't want Maier at 2, just move him down to 6 and just smush all the good hitters together.
And just a fun stat to throw out there: Johnny Giavotella was a .985 OPS batting #2 last year. They sent him down to the minors in favor of Chris ******* Getz. Not that I hate Getz...he's just...Chris Getz.

He'd still need 4 more years of 200 hits to get there.

the Red Sox are going to have a big decision on their hands over the next couple days. Last night the Sox had Bard come in from the Bullpen and he shut down the Twins in th 8th.
They claim he is still the #5 starter but currently Aaron Cook is tearing it up down in tipple A. The biggest problem is that Cook can opt out of his contract if he is not on the big league team by May 1st. Not to mention Dice K is going to be coming back in 1-2 months.
It will be interesting to see if they move Bard back into the bullpen to become the closer until Bailey comes backs back and slot Cook in the #5 starter role or if they just move Cook into the bullpen.

I wouldn't say Bard shut them down. He got the outs, yes. But one was a bullet hit directly at someone. But I do think he should be in the bullpen.

I mean yeah but with a man on 3rd and only 1 out he kept them off the score board with only 11 total pitches (4 being an intentional walk). The main thing is that I don't think that Aceves can handle the closer role. He actually said it himself that he isn't comfortable in that role.

Probably has an inflamed rotator cuff.
That's just my guess. You lose a lot of velocity, and you tend to leave the ball up a lot and walk a lot of people cuz you can't follow through with the pitch.

Bay and Pelf to the DL on the same day. It looks like Pelf is going to need Tommy John from the early news.
