I would hardly call the late round picks splurging but you have to overpay for FAs, even 31 year old ones. As for Burleson, I think they're just desperate for WRs to pair with Megatron.

It's not huge... but $26 million with $10 million due in the first year for the 31-year-old defensive end got my attention.

I would be shocked if he played more than two years of that contract.

overpaying is only way you get what you want aboard. Lions need few solid veterans to help out the pathetic team.

I like it, actually. I am a real believer in Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Now if they draft Okung they have an opportunity to make a move toward mediocrity; which, by their standards, would be the best thing going on in Detroit since Barry Sanders.

No no no and no. Backus is not holding the Lions back, and he is the 2nd best offensive lineman on the team, significantly better than Gosder at right tackle (thanks Millen). Drafting Suh or McCoy would help this team much more.

I could see the Lions taking JPP now. They have their NT, UT, RE, now they need a LE.

I think you get in trouble not drafting higher rated players, JPP isnt close to McCoy and Suh to me. If you need to go in a differant direction then trade down. Drafting Okung or JPP at #2 is not too smart.

They should consider Lito Sheppard in FA. They need corners and he needs a team. Hes better than what the team currently has.

Detroit did a really nice job in free agency. I definitely like the direction they're going in under Schwartz (although I'd like it a whole lot more if they took Michael Oher over Brandon Pettigrew.) I would maybe look for even more veteran leadership though - Bulluck might not really fit although he does have the scheme/Schwartz connection, but maybe Antonio Pierce? Just throwing some names out there.
