It was a bit confusing, so I was really curious to see how he'd take to being a 2-down 43 SLB and how he'd do with his hand in the ground. This game basically answered my questions. We saw him do everything. He sprinted downfield step for step with Greg Olsen, disrupted his route, and saved a touchdown. He utterly owned Chris Williams with both edge and inside rushing. We may be looking at the most dynamic front 7 player of the 2010 Raiders.
Stop it, you're giving me wood.

I never worried about Wimbley in pass coverage cause he is so athletic He is really responding well to the move to SLB in the 43.he is by far our best LB and I would of said that 3-4 weeks ago and he seems to be a very smart player too.

Ro looks like he is thinking to much instead of just reacting but im not worried about him.

Love that Veldheer got some first team reps against Peppers cause it will benift him alot and also played good

And I don't think Howard will even make the team. Now they have Mike Mitchell playing the 3rd down LB.Man Howard has certainly feel off hard.

I don't see why they wouldn't keep Howard. He's cheap and he's easily the best 2nd string linebacker we have (nonwithstanding Mitchell playing nickel LB).

You guys think Stanford Routt will win out the 2nd string position? From what Ive seen Johnson hasn't looked as good as Routt.

Johnson hasn't even played enough to garner much of an opinion and I haven't read anything to suggest he's been excellent enough in camp to overcome that. The best he can hope for right now is to split duties with Routt once the season starts.

Ya even though Howard isnt getting the playing time he used too he should still end up on the team. One injury to Scott or Mitchell and Howard would step in easily for them.

When will he ever see the field tho? The Raiders will do anything to get Mike on the field and that coast Howard his only chance to see the field.I haven't payed attention to him on special teams to say if he is good at that or not and R.Brown and that rookie from ASU are far cheaper and play good special teams.

If we can get a 4th round pick or trick someone to give us a third which is doubtful why not trade him?he is only under contract for this year and will walk next year why not get something for him and let him play and contribute on another team that he can start at and two a team that he fits at.like Colts or tampa he will the a excellent cover 2 LB for ether of those teams.

Very few teams are looking to trade for a player with only 2 preseason games left and Howard is pretty far from expensive considering he's due less than 2 million this year.

Also, let's be honest, we don't have a hell of a whole lot at linebacker behind the starting trio. Mitchell seems to have found a home playing nickel linebacker next to McClain (with our base OLB's manning both DE spots), but we'd be kidding ourselves if we said he wasn't still a bit rough playing that close to the line. He's strong in pursuit, not so much in plugging gaps. Quentin Groves seems to have been largely a dud to date (besides for getting in fights in TC), and guys like Nixon and Norris are nice special teams players but will hopefully never touch the field as defensive starters and while Ricky Brown plays as hard as anyone on the team he's probably our least athletic defender. Goethel has been way better than I thought, but that's not saying much. Having a guy who is strong in coverage, is one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL, plays the flats well, and can handle both outside linebacker spots is a bonus, not a negative.

I'm more excited about this Raider defense than any in recent memory. With the pass rush being a major plus so far in preseason and a strong defensive backfield, this is likely to be the best rated pass defense Oakland has had in 2006 and the run defense in general looks stronger. Having good backups is part of being a great defense, and you'd be delusional if you thought Howard wasn't clearly the best non-starter linebacker the team has. The fact that he isn't good enough to start indicated good things about this team more than it indicates him being irrelevant.

Do you guys think McClain can become a top 5 MLB in the league?

For sure I think so. I had McClain as my 4th ranked prospect coming out and thats very high for a LB. The guy has all the physical tools at 6'3 255lbs with 4.5 speed. He has looked good in coverage so far in the pre season, run defense has been so so as of now. We have to remember he is still 21 years old and is taking alot of pressure being the leader of the defense calling out plays and assignments.

Ya cause I think him, Seymour, and Asomugha will be the main guys on this defense this year, I think we have a real shot at having a solid defense this year. The other starters have looked pretty good especially the d-line.

Bad news....

Quote:
Coach Tom Cable indicated Monday that Chaz Schilens may need to undergo surgery to repair a knee injury.

The knee problem developed due to Schilens' overcompensating for the foot injury that has plagued him since last summer. Cable suggested that Schilens could return for the opener if it turns out to be just a scope, but that's overly optimistic. It's time to take Schilens off redraft cheat sheets. He won't help the Raiders early in the season. Louis Murphy, though, enters the picture as the late-round flier of choice in Oakland
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Hea...=NFL&hl=179049

Rumor is Seattle may cut Deion Branch if they work out a trade for Vincent Jackson. Could be a win win for us, sign Branch and Jackson is out of the AFC west

I highly doubt Owens would have signed with us unless we massively overpaid him.

Unfortunately i don't think we sniff .500 if we don't improve on a Murphy/DHB starting lineup.

Any ideas on the WR market out there? Vincent Jackson has no chance of coming here, only guy I can think of is Patrick Crayton from the Cowboys.

Also I hope we continue to see Tyvon Branch and Mike Mitchell on the field together more and Huff used more for passing downs. I just keep seeing week 1, CJ2K breaking a long run and Huff missing the tackle just like what happend with Forte. Branch as a FS and Mitchell in the box as a SS could make our improved run defense even better

Quote:
– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. Coach Tom Cable was not sure how long he would be out.

– Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey returned to practice and looked the better for sitting out four practices with “fatigue,” making a few plays after dropping off in the sessions that preceded his absence. Running back Darren McFadden was also back on the field.

– Alex Daniels is once again a defensive lineman. He was back to wearing No. 71, instead of 39, and Cable said after practice things hadn’t progressed as the staff had hoped.

– Right tackle Langston Walker (lower back) and defensive tackle Richard Seymour (triceps) didn’t practice, nor did center Samson Satele. Cable said Satele’s ankle injury, sustained early in the Bears game, did not look serious.

– Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will see considerable action in the last two preseason games, although Cable would not commit as to whether he would go in as No. 2 or No. 3.
http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraider...d-dhb-returns/

Good to see DMC and DHB back in practice, hopefully they can impact in saturdays game. Also nice to see Gradkowski getting to play in the pre season now the last 2 games. Im sure we will see a good amount from him. Schilens should be back soon hopefully.

I hope/expect Schillen to be back at week 2 which would be a 3 and a half week recovery.

Not a bad question, lets get Marvin Harrison out of retirement...

No but seriously I wouldn't mind Crayton but it would have to be a trade, doesn't he want out since he is now the 4th or 5th option in Dallas? Haven't heard much from that situation in awile but if he was to come here he would get alot more looks since he is more expierenced than ANY of our starters. Kevin Curtis might be out there but he has no knees.. Marty Booker might be out there but a little old for my likings and just can't get it done anymore. One site said that Holt got cut by the Pats, not sure about that but would love to sign him to a 1 year deal.

Let's not be overly optimistic here. Week 3, mostly likely 4, would be a safer estimation. This is Chaz Schilens after all, and his injury history and slow recovery periods are issues that have followed him since his college days at SDSU.

If there is any optimism with his situation, it would be that Jay Richardson had a similar procedure done a couple of weeks ago and he's anticipating a return by week 1.

Heres something that surprised me...

Marcus from San Jose writes: Are there are any veteran receivers Oakland could have its eye on?

Bill Williamson: I think Oakland will definitely look at receivers on the waiver wire after the Sept. 4 cut day. The Raiders are young and green at the position. They could use some veteran help. I have a name to keep tabs on: T. J. Houshmandzadeh. There has been some chatter that Seattle could cut him. If so, I think Oakland could pounce on him. His skills are dwindling and he will be 33 soon. But he’s a veteran who could help this unit. Again, he’s not available yet. But if he becomes free, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Raiders pursued Houshmandzadeh.

TJ would be perfect for us. He is older but thats what we need, a guy who can show the younger guys the ropes and give Campbell somebody else who is reliable to throw to other than Miller. Would cost much to get him too since he would get a fat pay check if he is released Im sure

I would love him but as far as I know, he is Seattles best receiver and they probably feel like they are right there with SF as far as division winner but we all know that is a dream scenario for Pete Carroll. The Seahawks won't just get rid of him but if they do... suit up, Housh in the black and silver.

Im thinking they only get rid of him if they work out a trade for Vincent Jackson which would only make the situation even better.

Veldheer practiced at center with the first team o-line. Should be a great test against a very good 49ers defense.

I'm conflicted on whether I'd like to see Veldheer at center or tackle long-term. I could see him as a dominant force in the middle of our line, and a possible Pro Bowl type player at the center position, in spite of his lack of experience there, based on his sheer size and strength advantage to most interior defensive lineman. When in his proper stance, he maintains a better pad level and lower center of gravity than most lineman of his stature, so I don't foresee that being much of an issue if he does ever make the switch.
