Default Heisman Snub Thread

I will make this into a poll of the worst 5 in my opinion, but feel free to add others and discuss.
I still think Suh deserved it this year.

2003 WINNER- JASON WHITE, QB, Oklahoma
SHOULD HAVE- LARRY FITZGERALD, WR, Pitt

Larry had 87 catches for 1,595 yards and an unbelievable 22 TDs.
319-253 was the final first place vote score for White, and he had a good year admittedly on a great team.

White played great during the season, but sucked in the Big 12 Conference Title game losing to Kansas State. But as we know with the Heisman voting, there is too much early (lazy) voting that doesn't take into account the biggest game(s) at the end.
Jason White was 265-of-414 for 3,738 yards, 40 TDs, 8 INTs. Great numbers, but we've seen better numbers in that same conference not win the Heisman.
Fitzgerald set an NCAA record with touchdown catches in 18 straight games.

1992 WINNER- GINO TORETTA, QB, Miami
SHOULD HAVE- MARSHALL FAULK, RB, San Diego St.

Faulk finished in the top-9 in voting for 3 years in a row for the unknown Aztecs (1991-1993).
In 1992, once again we had a case, like with White, where the big and best team was led by a good QB, so they gave him the Heisman. Toretta's stats were not Heisman worthy whereas White's were very good stats of course.
Toretta only passed for 19 TDs for the Canes that season. Not that the NFL thing matters, but Torretta was a forgotten man on draft day and didn’t hear his name called until the seventh round, when Minnesota selected him. He never played a down for the Vikings, or the Lions, 49ers or Colts, who all picked him up for insurance. In fact, he only threw 16 NFL passes, all while a member of the Seahawks in ’96.
Faulk led the nation with 1,630 yards rushing, and added 15 touchdowns—even though injuries late in the year kept him out of one game and hampered him in two others. In the process, Marshall joined Herschel Walker as only the second running back in NCAA history to rack up more than 3,000 rushing yards in his first two years. The voters went with the better team, and the QB, screwing over Faulk.

1975 WINNER- ARCHIE GRIFFIN, RB, Ohio St.
SHOULD HAVE- CHUCK MUNCIE, RB, Cal

Archie was the defending Heisman Winner on a powerhouse team. He rushed for only 1,357 yards, and a total of 4 touchdowns in 1975. But because he was the defending Heisman Winner, and because Ohio State was #1 and on national TV a lot early, he picked up the votes early again and many voters didn't even watch any Pac-10 games.
Another reason why Archie didn't deserve it is that his teammate Pete Johnson rushed for 25 TDs and rushed for 1,059 yards himself. Which guy was better that year?

Chuck Muncie rushed for 1,460 rushing yards, with 13 touchdowns and averaged 6.4 yards per carry as Cal tied for the Pac-10 title.

1967- GARY BEBAN, QB, UCLA
SHOULD HAVE- OJ SIMPSON, RB, USC

Beban threw for only 1,359 yards and 8 touchdowns. He rished for 227 yards and plunged in for 11 TD rushes.

OJ won the UPI Player of the Year Award in 1967.
Simpson led the nation in rushing in 1967 when he ran for 1,451 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. (He also led the nation in rushing the next year)

In 1967, he starred in the USC vs. UCLA rivalry game.
His 64 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter tied the game, with the PAT the margin of victory. This was the biggest play in what is regarded as one of the greatest football games of the 20th century

1956- PAUL HORNUNG, QB, Notre Dame
SHOULD HAVE- JIM BROWN, RB, Syracuse

In 1956, Notre Dame went 2-8. Yes, 2-8.
On the season, Hornung rushed for 420 yards and threw for another 917, down from 9 TDs the year before.
In comparison, Brown rushed for 986 yards and 14 scores – in 8 games – to lead the Orange to the Cotton Bowl.
Brown didn't necessarily deserve a Heisman with those stats, but Hornung sure didn't.

Jim Brown not getting that Heisman is was an absolute crime and it was after that point that Dick Schaap never voted for the Heisman Trophy again.

Of the list, Larry Fitzgerald was the strongest Heisman snub.

Others; 1964 - Huarte (ND) over Dick Butkus -3rd - (ILL),
1987 - Tim Brown(ND) over Don McPherson (SYR),
1995 - Eddie George(OSU) over Tommie Frazier(NEB),
1997 - Charles Woodson(UM) over Peyton Manning(UT),

Agreed 100%. Suh was the best player in the nation last year, and I don't think it was really close. Shutting down entire teams running games, leading his team in tackles as a DT, demanding double teams all the time and consistently beating them, and being one of the most dynamic pass rushing forces we've ever seen from his position....Suh was flat out dominant last year. I've never seen games completely dominated to the degree Nebraska games were last year by a DT, but Suh did that.

That being said, I don't think it was the biggest snub ever. Ingram had a hell of a year last year. Though he didn't deserve it, Suh not winning doesn't compare to some of the snubs of the past.

Who else is down with moving the awards ceremonies AFTER the bowl games? I mean you really get a gauge of the best players on the big stage.

Charles Woodson had arguably the greatest season ever for a corner back in 1997 and also made impact plays at receiver and punt returner. Peyton Manning was barely the best quarterback in his conference (Tim Couch actually had more TD, yards, and a better completion percentage on a less talented team, despite throwing more picks). Woodson pretty much carried Michigan to an undefeated season and a National Championship. While Woodson was busy dominating rival Ohio State, Manning was trying his hardest to cost his team victory against winless-in-the-SEC Vanderbilt (Tennessee ended up winning despite a terrible performance from Manning).

Manning really didn't deserve the Heisman that year (and the large discrepancy in votes showed that). It's easy to look at what he's done as a pro and wonder why he never won college football's biggest award, but that doesn't mean he deserved it.

Plus, Woodson is football Jesus, so there's that.

Also, I never knew Archie Griffin had such a poor 2nd Heisman year in comparison. In looking at that, I can't believe he won it a 2nd time. I went with him slightly over Toretta.

Hornung was a travesty though.

Archie didn't get a bunch of TDs b/c fullback Pete Johnson was the goal line back in Woody's system and he was the school's career scoring leader until Mike Nugent passed him in 2004. I wouldn't call his senior year "poor" though in comparison to anything. Guy was unstoppable and finished as the career rushing leader in NCAA history. A big reason Archie won that year was b/c Ohio State was undefeated going into the Rose Bowl and playing for a NC.

I went with Archie over Muncie.

My reasoning: that is a VERY poor way to make history.

Yea, but the Heisman has nothing to do with career accomplishments. Or at least it shouldn't.

Not to mention, while I don't mean to say that Archie was bad or had a poor season, when another back is able to rush for over 1000 yards and 300ish yards less than you, then it sort of puts rushing for 1300 yards in a different perspective. Even if Johnson took the goal line carries, how do you only score 4 touchdowns? That means that Griffin scored 4 times outside of the 10 yard line essentially. That's not that impressive.

Also, as mentioned, in hind sight it's a pretty poor choice for making history. Sort of like if Tebow was given the Heisman either of the past 2 years.

I'm a Cane (obviously) but can't believe no one listed one of the worse I've ever seen: Eric Crouch over Rex Grossman in 2001.

Eric Crouch that year threw for 1500 yards, 10 interceptions and only 7 TDs. Yes he ran for 1100 yards for 18 TDs, but those are some horrible passing numbers and 2600 total yards with 25 touchdowns don't make up for more INTs thrown than TDs, and come nowhere near Grossman's sublime Sophomore year when he threw for 38 TDs (12 ints) 66% accuracy and over 4100 yards. Really not even close.

What about Adrian Peterson's freshman year second place finish to Leinart?

Or to a lesser degree Bush over Young? Maybe it was the right call but looking closer at it the gap in voting was much bigger than it ought to have been

How the hell is White over Fitzgerald winning this poll. White had a 40/8 TD:INT ratio on a BCS championship finalist. Most years that's a runaway Heisman victory. Paul Hornung over Jim Brown should win this in a landslide. Notre Dame went frickin 2-8 that year!

Also, since it involves the chosen one, I should mention that Charles Woodson (PBHN) was 39048231432940324x more deserving of the Heisman than Peyton Manning in 1997.
