Panthers WR Steve Smith Breaks Arm
Panthers WR Steve Smith Breaks Arm
Quote:
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm playing in a flag football game this past weekend, according to multiple reports.
ProFootballTalk.com editor and SN contributor Mike Florio reports Smith suffered the injury while playing in an adult flag football league and not at a children’s camp, as
ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter first reported.
Smith, 31, will likely miss Panthers training camp, scheduled to begin July 26, because of the injury. But he is expected to be ready in time for Carolina’s season-opener on Sept. 12 against the New York Giants.
"I’m not trying to play doctor, but I don’t think he’ll miss any games due to this injury," Panthers coach John Fox told ESPN. "He did this while trying to play with and help the kids."
Smith broke the same arm in the Panthers’ Week 16 game in 2009.

Oy.......if I was being paid millions based on my athletic ability, I think I'd stay far away from activities that could take that away.
Plenty of time for playing flag football, riding motorcycles, practicing MMA...etc....when your retired at 35.

Bummer. Gotta love his passion, but coming off a serious injury you have to hope he'd make smarter decisions.

Steve Smith is a rock head.
Poor Jimmy. Don't be in a rush for that starting gig just yet.

He's a warrior, he'll be back in no time and full go. Still though, it's concerning that he was doing ANYTHING physical if it wasn't close to being healed, I know it's flag football, but I wouldn't of wanted him doing anything remotely close to something that could end in him falling awkwardly.

He was playing fraking flag football, don't say he's an idiot for doing something like that. It's not like he drove around without a helmet on a motorcycle.

I don't know how I feel about this. Do NBA players play in pick up leagues during the off-season? Not to mention he broke the SAME arm during week 16. Was he fully rehabbed? I'm leaning towards this being a bonehead move.

It's still an unnecessary risk....like I said, play your 10-15 years, earn millions, then goof off when your retired super young (by real world standards anyway.)
If you want to coach at a camp or something, fine...just don't take the unnecessary risks doing something like playing a pickup sport.
What if it if wasn't just (just?) a re-broken arm? I think people would be in more of an uproar if he tore up his knee doing it. Luckily for him, he didn't, but the risk is always there and he was just adding to it doing something he didn't need to be doing.
I'd be pissed with him if I were a higher up on the team...

So basically, just don't have any fun whatsoever while you're under contract? All he did was play flag football and had a freak accident, there is absolutely no reason to call him an idiot.

Play video games....buy a hot tub/pool and spend all day in it......go for a drive one of your many awesome cars (not drunk)....go hunting/fishing......host a tv show.....pay your friends to do stupid things.... All **** a multi-millionare can easily do and theres far less risk in any of those and still a ton of fun to be had.
Everyone is making flag football seem harmless, but you could very easily bust yourself up real good. I tore up my knee throwing a disc in ultimate frisbee...no one anywhere near me, it just gave out. And I got made fun of when I told people how I did it, but when I saw a sports medicine doctor finally, he told me it's common. Said that 80% of sports related knee injuries happen in non-contact situations. Flag football certainly presents that risk greatly.
And if you absolutely must spend your time having fun playing little pick up games on the side....don't play a professional sport. If your going to make millions of dollars doing something that requires you to be physically fit and healthy, don't screw around on the side. It's stupid and just exposes you to unnecessary risk of injury. If you can't go 10-12 years without playing pickup sports while you make tens of millions of dollars, then you apparently aren't very bright and are willing to risk your future earning potential.

I'm sorry I just can't take anything you say very seriously when you're suggesting driving some awesome (and probably very fast) car and playing with firearms is safer than playing a no-contact sport.

OMG.... Not once did I suggest doing anything unsafe with either of those things. I knew as soon as I put "hunt" in there it's spark someone off.....but yes, if your not stupid about it, you'll never get hurt hunting. In fact, 99.9% of hunting is sitting in the woods doing nothing. Secondly, anyone with 1/4 of a brain in their head can be around guns safely. Anyone who shoots himself cleaning his gun is ******** and shouldn't have had a gun to begin with.....
Regardless....there are plenty of things to do in this world to entertain yourself without putting yourself at unnecessary risk of injury. Flag football is not amongst them.
I guess my basic point is, when your a retired millionare, do whatever the hell you want. When your still active, being paid millions to play a rough sport, don't do anything on top of that to put yourself at risk.

I don't think there is anything wrong with flag football at all, but if you just broke your arm in week 16 I do. Most players I could care less about stuff like that, but I would be against it for a guy like SS. Obviously it wasn't healed nearly enough if he broke it off of contact with the ground, so it wouldn't have been the craziest thing for him to just pass.
It's one thing to tell all athletes don't play pick-up sports, or flag football games, but it's another when a guy just had a serious injury at the end of the regular season.

He broke the same arm, but in a different part of the arm, all reports are saying he should be back before the regular season, no big deal imo.

A few years ago, Greg Oden was playing in a pickup game and the Blazers flipped out about it. He was coming off knee surgery so different circumstances. I remember there was a thing where Monta Ellis got hurt in a pickup game or something, anyway can't remember the exact details. Found a little article on it though a lot if it deals with international play.
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/feature...ame/index.html
It's a tough situation, but the players really shouldn't be doing these things. Actually, I would consider it up to team management and agents to get it into these guys heads that injuries can and do happen in games like that. That article I linked talks about NBA teams putting it in players contracts that they are restricted from high risk activities and must receive the team's permission to play in certain things like charity events and etc. Going to guess NFL has something similar in some players contracts.
And I can second BeerBaron on that you'd have to be a complete idiot to get hurt hunting if you have the slightest clue of your doing, there's very little risk at all.

It's not that big of a deal although it would be nice to get some reps in with his young QB's.

It's pretty ridiculous that teams want to stop players from doing so many things that are possibly dangerous yet they want to have 18 games in the regular season.
