And it's terrible, I know, but at least he didn't punch her in the gut or something, not injuring the baby. A busted lip and swollen face, horrible as it is, doesn't hurt the developing baby.

Hmm, hadn't thought about that, just went straight to the firsthand physical damage.

True, there are tons of cases where a mother's cravings, feelings, and stuff do actually affect the baby. Hopefully everything's all right.

You aren't thinking this through enough. A 300lb man hitting a pregnant woman in any fashion is dangerous to the fetus. Punching or slapping her in the face could easily send her to the ground, hitting her belly on the ground or some furnature.
