Alphonso Smith for Gronkowski and pick...
http://twitter.com/michaelombardi/status/23000352520
Smith is a former second round pick (Denver gave up a future first). Gronkowski had a strong preseason and I'm sad to see him go. He would have been claimed on waivers so it is nice to use his value.

HA .. lol that's funny! One teams trash is another teams treasure. Our #4 TE for a depth CB, not so bad since both teams claim they were cutting their guy.
It seems to me Josh McDaniels is a very polarizing individual. If you are not on his page you are off his team. Smith clearly has skills but for whatever reason was not a fit in Denver. Hopefully the scenery change does him some good (for us) & the youth movement is on!! Cutting King, Wesley, Simpson & Bly going with Phillips, Spivey, Berry, Houston, Wade, Delmas & Smith ... all rookies or 2nd/3rd yrs guys in the league.
Don't know this stat so I'm speculating, but with the " roster purge" since Schwartz/Mayhew have captained the ship, Detroit has to be one of the younger teams in the NFL (outside of Backus, Dom & Hanson)

On Alphonso Smith ... I just read this in a Kowalski MLive article ... "Last year, the Broncos traded a first-round pick to move up in the second round to draft Smith with the 37th overall choice. Smith, who played at Wake Forest, didn't play much as a rookie and didn't appear to have a role with the Broncos this season either."
Can that even be true? Not that he was taken #37 overall, but they traded a 1st rd pick to move up ... so a high #2 pick to take him & a #1 pick traded to get there. Wow! With all that they had no plans to use him? Either McDaniels is a whack job or Smith is awful.

i like the trade. Mayhews plan is obviously to stay young with our secondary. Bly is not very good and smith could probably give us the same performance but actually has potential. CB is such a weak position and if we cant add a reliable guy we might as well add young guys with potential and see if we cant get lucky on them until we can actually add reliable players
with that said patrick peterson is scotts first mock!

He was a good talent coming out of college and to get him with a late round guy is a good value imo. This could possibly be a gem here, but i wonder if he didn't gel in denver due to the system or his talent/ work ethic.

I am one of the few Broncos fans that still thinks Phonz will turn into a good player. McDaniels gave up a lot to get him with the intention that he would be the nickel back right away, but honestly, he looked lost and timid last year (and got beat out by a scrub). He really struggled to figure out where he was supposed to be. He has been much better this off-season, but Perrish Cox has outplayed him, and SydQuan Thomson has been just as good (with much more to offer on special teams).
He has talent and works hard - hopefully he figures out the rest.

I'm not getting my hopes up. You don't just give up on a 1st round pick after one season, without great reason.

Smith has great ballskills, average speed, he's a decent tackler but nothing to be excited about. That said, he is still better than what you've had in recent years at CB

anyone find it odd that the broncos traded sheffler to the lions and then traded a CB they used a first round pick to get to the lions for another TE?
wtf is going on in denver?

First report I saw mentioned nothing of a pick. What pick did we give up?

I think it's worded wrong. They didn't trade up, they used a future first for the #37 pick out right, there was no other 2nd round pick or anything else that year packaged. It was stupid on them at the time to take less value out of a pick and it's blown up in their face even more now.
If Syd'Quan Thompson didn't look so good they probably would have kept him. From what I've seen of Smith he sucks, but you guys got great value for a former 1st rder, and with Spievey playing Safety you really needed the CB depth. All you can do is hope for the best, I like the risk though because you didn't give up much and your top 2 TE's are set.

The Broncos traded what turned out to be the 14th overall pick in the 2010 draft (Earl Thomas) to move up in the 2nd rd (#37) in 2009 and take Smith. Denver effectively turned that pick (which I think was one of the 1st rd picks they got from Chicago for Jay Cutler), into the Lions #4 TE, a 7th rd pick in 2009.

I think McDaniels runs the franchise like people normally run a Madden franchise.
The only problem is that Madden franchise strategies aren't worth a **** in real life, but McDaniels doesn't seem to understand that.
So Jay Cutler turned into Ayers, Moreno, Tebow, and a 4th string TE?

Who does dumb **** like this on Madden? Not me for sure.
My MAdden trades would be sending out something like Dan Gronkowski and getting back a 1st rounder.... wait...

Mayhew is dirty. I think he got some confidence early on with an easy INT and has been improving every week since. The defensive line's play has also helped out the secondary. Chris Houston had a really good game yesterday.

^ Wow really? Damn I didn't know he was balling out like that. 4 picks already? CB was one of you guys biggest weaknesses too, what a steal. Which is good anyway since you guys don't suck and your winning yourself out of position for Peterson now(hooray for Wade Phillips suckage) maybe you go after Prince, or another position outright of Alphonso keeps playing well and you snag someone like Aaron Ross in FA(who I think will be a great pick-up for whoever gets him).

I think if Prince or Peterson are on the board we're going to take one of them. Unless a LT shoots up the boards, but I think they won't feel confident going with Smith and Houston. Bother Prince and Peterson are special prospects and this is a team that has had CB as a top 3 need for the past 5 years but never had a prospect good enough to take

with the way the team is playing right now, we might end up with a draft aslot where those two top corners are gone, but we could end up with a LT... that'd be perfect for our offense, I think.
On the other hand we need a corner. Badly. Another one I mean. But Smith has played well thus far.

Im going to hold judgement until i see what they do against the jets. I'd be very surprised if we play ourselves out of the top 10. With the top end talent at WR QB CB and DE i think Prince should be there where we pick. But heck i'd be happy if we move out of it, sad because we cant get a great CB but happy with our performance.
