That'd be interesting to see. I don't know how well he'd do there now, or before hand, it's not all that different, but I think staying in a 3-4 as a pass rush specialist may be the best for him.

It's hard to get pass rushers on the field in spot duty as easy as you can in a 3-4, and he's gonna have to play vs the run alot more which he was never a slouch at, but hard to tell if this would be asking to much to change positions.

I mean of course if the price is right he's worth the risk, but he's had enough time to recover from his initial injury vs the Titans, and all he's done since is have other injuries continue to pile up and be a liability on the field.

If he can get healthy, and that's a big "if," then I think he can still be an effective pass-rusher.
I think these latest injuries are all being faked so he can collect a paycheck without really doing anything.

I'd be willing to try him out at DE across from Peppers if the Bears could get him for the league minimum.

I mean, we have Charles freaking Grant on the roster right now.

The odds of Merriman signing with New England are remote, regardless of their need for an impact pass rusher, because Merriman isn't an impact pass rusher. He's not even a decent pass rusher at this point - ever since he got off of the steroids, his body has been breaking down and he's just not the same player anymore. Don't forget the bad blood that exists between Merriman and the Patriots owing back to some of the comments he's made over the years as a member of the Chargers. Most importantly, Robert Kraft has pretty much a zero-tolerance policy for players with legal issues, specifically domestic violence. Add Merriman's likely contract demands on top of all of that, and I'd be very surprised if he's a Patriot at any point.

I'd take the gamble on him. He won't be expensive, he's only 26, I trust the HC and the defensive coaching staff on the Jets, knee surgery usually takes a couple years to come back from, and the steroid issue is lame to me.

Merriman should be able to become a good player again. People have come back from the knee surgery he's had before, and I like the fact that he acknowledges that he wants and needs to reinvent himself as a player. The Rex Ryan Jets' D could use a guy with his talents when he's healthy. Any team could use his talents if they're willing to let him get healthy and get his head on again. It sounds like big obstacles are in his way, but he's too young and talented to not turn into something again. If he's as hungry as he thinks he is, then this should end well for him.

Does that mean Larry English is starting yet?

How the mighty have fallen.

I remember back after the 2007 season, I crunched the sacks-per-start on the top pass rushers in the NFL. The best guys came in around .8, but Merriman was all alone at the top with something closer to 1.1. He was the most dominant pass rusher in the NFL and it wasn't even close to close.

Has CC posted? Is Merriman done or is he just spending too much time on the trainer's table?

But yeah, Merriman was scary back in '07. Dude was unblockable. I'll probably always remember that Merriman...

You guys know where else he'd be a great fit? Tennessee. :)

Don't you mean 2006? Merriman in 2007 was good but nowhere near dominant anymore IMO. He had already been busted for PED's, and while he was active and making plays the 12.5 sacks, 2 FF's and 4 Pass Deflections in a full season was nowhere near the guy who racked up 17 sacks, 4 FF's, and 7 Pass Deflections in 12 games the year prior.

He was still a very good player, but he wasn't the unstoppable pass rushing force like 2006, or honestly 2005. That player was gone the moment he was busted for PED's.

That's because he had Ted Cottrell as his DC. The guy had Merriman in coverage for half the season. Look how much different Ware is playing under Wade as opposed to under Parcells.

If the Giants can resurrect Shawn Andrews' career, maybe they can do the same for Merriman.

How insane would the Giants D be if they could get Merriman added to that line playing at even 80% of his 2006/2007 level?

:( It's not that long ago that the Jaguars were good.

He could come to Buffalo and sit on the bench next to Maybin...
It would be the greatest "Once was" pass rush EVER.

I hope he gets his career on track. Much as I think he's a dbag, and hate him as a Charger, I also hate seeing great careers derailed by injuries.

I'd take him on the Jets. Maybe not to play, but the threat of getting slapped by him would probably keep most female reporters out of our locker room for the year, keeping further controversy to a minimum.

You know what, I wouldn't take him on the Ravens. Just cause all you silly bastards want him on your team and I want to be different.

And it wasn't revisionist history that that hit destroyed his knee. He tore his MCL because of that hit, and ended up playing the rest of the season to the AFC Championship game with it torn like that. I admit his mistake was waiting so long to get surgery after the season was over, which is one of the reasons AJ Smith was so upset with him. But it doesn't change the fact that it was the injury and not the lack of juicing that made him what he is today.
Oh come on . . . "essentially ran into Merriman and nearly knocked himself of the game" is a weak description of that hit. Merriman put a clean looking "cheap shot" on Vince and the Titans returned the favor.
