Default QB Pool

Add the Seahawks to the list of BIG need at the QB spot, looks like Whitehurst is an expensive backup.....However I think you can remove Cleveland from this list of QB BIG need. Teams with QB questions

-Buffalo Bills (Fitzpatrick is good stop gap, tutor)
-Carolina Panthers (Would they take Luck if #1 pick w/ Clausen aboard?)
-Seattle Seahawks
-San Francisco 49ers
-Arizona Cardinals
-Jacksonville Jaguars (Will Garrard return? Who is the future?)
-Washington Redskins
-Minnesota Vikings
-Oakland Raiders (Campbell and Gradkowski ar enot looked at long term)
-Philadelphia Eagles (Vick is a FA and Kolb's big starting money contract)

Teams who could suprise
-Miami Dolphins (Henne falls on a lot of the blame)
-Cincinnati Bengals (Cincy is falling in turmoil)
-Kansas City Chiefs (Will most likely restructure)

Look at the QB's who could find a new home (leaving out Palmer and Henne)

-Michael Vick
-Donovan McNabb
-Kevin Kolb
-Jason Campbell
-Alex Smith
-Matt Hasselback (cut?)
-Marc Bulger
-(R) Andrew Luck
-(R) Jake Locker
-(R) Ryan Mallett
-(R) Cam Newton (Have a feeling with all this bad news he is coming out)
-(R) Christian Ponder

Anyone want to take a stab at the musical chairs?

I think Philly will franchise Vick and trade Kolb to a team like the 49ers or Arizona who probably wants a veteran QB and not wait on a rookie and I see McNabb going to the other team. Some team will think they can re-make Alex Smith and give him a try.

-Seattle Seahawks-After giving up a lot to get Charlie Whitehurst, will Pete Carroll be willing to admit such a mistake so early?
-San Francisco 49ers-May be the only thing that saves Singletary's job
-Arizona Cardinals-If they have a shot at Luck, Locker or Mallett I think they have to take it
-Jacksonville Jaguars (Will Garrard return? Who is the future?)-I fully believe that as long as Del Rio has a job so will Garrard
-Washington Redskins-Like Carroll and the Seahawks, will Mike Shanahan be willing to admit his mistake so early?
-Minnesota Vikings-As big a need as any team in the NFL IMO
-Oakland Raiders (Campbell and Gradkowski ar enot looked at long term)-After this year I think they lock up Campbell
-Philadelphia Eagles (Vick is a FA and Kolb's big starting money contract)-I think they keep whoever is playing better at the end of the year

Teams who could suprise

-Miami Dolphins (Henne falls on a lot of the blame)-Id be surprised. Henne has some great tools and is still early in his development
-Cincinnati Bengals (Cincy is falling in turmoil)-Palmer IMO is close to done, but do the Bengals think that?
-Kansas City Chiefs (Will most likely restructure)-Despite not having great stats Cassell's play has improved and he has led the team back to relevance

Look at the QB's who could find a new home (leaving out Palmer and Henne)

I like Luck to Buffalo, Locker to San Francisco and Mallett to either Arizona or Minnesota in the first round of the draft. Whichever team doesn't get their QB in the draft will go for one of the FA QBs(my guess would be either Vick or Kolb if they are let go).
Newton I see declaring too but he is at best a 2nd round pick IMO and the likes of Ponder, Stanzi etc are the next in line

Arizona is highly unlikely to draft a QB after two last year, even if they end up with a high pick. Wisen is notoriously tough on QB's and I don't think would suffer another season of coaching up a youngster. So the Cards should be major players in FA there.

Palmer is 6th in the league in passing yards, 7th in passing Tds, and has an 80+ rating. If anyone thinks he's what's dragging the Bengals down they need to have their heads checked. How about no pass rush and poor effort from our receivers? Palmer's receivers have hung him out to dry this season.

Chad's effort has been all over the place & he's making rookie mistakes each week. He's not getting open, he's dropping passes, he's running the wrong routes, and he's whining about it. Shipley and Gresham are both still making rookie mistakes & have had communication errors with Carson (however, both of those guys work their ass off and put in the time with Palmer.) As for T.O., he played well last night & has good statistics on the season, but you've got to wonder if the team wouldn't have been better off without him. He's not putting in the time with Carson and he's shown extreme laziness on the field. If he doesn't think he can catch the ball, he won't go after it. Every ball needs to be thrown perfectly & put on his body; if he has to reach to get it or really use his hands, Owens won't bother. He leads the league in drops, he cuts off his routes, and there are a good 2 Ints (at least) that wouldn't have happened had T.O. either gone after the ball. Not to mention a few of those drops have come at the worst possible moment and he has no concept of being a team player & fighting for first downs; he acts like he's above everyone. Never before have I seen such a big receiver avoid contact to this extent, he simply won't go for 50-50 balls. A key Ochocinco drop turned into an INT and a game-winning drive for Tampa Bay.

Palmer has panicked this season when he doesn't see anybody open, he's forced a couple throws. However, that's probably 2-3 Ints and a couple blown 3rd downs. Sometimes he just seems a bit off. Likewise sometimes he's on and threading the needle, controlling the pace of the game, and doing everything Carson Palmer should be doing. He hasn't been perfect, he's been far from elite, but right now he also looks like the only reason we're even in games. Like it or not, he's still an upper tier QB in this league. If he were getting some help Cincy could just as easily be 5-3 instead of 2-6. He's still a good starting Quarterback, but he needs some help from his WR/TEs, his pass-blocking, and his defense. He really is a bright spot compared to the rest of the team.

T.O. and Chad will be out next year leaving Shipley & Gresham as the teams building blocks. Receiver, Defensive End, Linebacker, and Safety all could be 1st Round needs. Palmer's picked up his game since the Carolina game (week 3) and has shown he can still absolutely be an NFL starting QB. I wouldn't be opposed to a Christian Ponder or Ricky Stanzi in the 3rd. I would fully expect Cincinnati to go WR or DE if they landed in the Top 12, which looks likely.

We only drafted one (Hall was a UDFA). I agree that the Cards will definitely look long and hard at any potential veteran QBs but I wouldn't rule them out from drafting a QB. Hall is not the answer and Skelton is long term project.

Iwould think that McNabb is the likely choice because of his training and home in Arizona

I just wanna throw his name out there, Kyle Orton? I'm not sure if he's signed to a long term deal, but I was certain he is suppose to be a FA this offseason? Any chance McDaniel trades him and go with Tebow next year?

My guesses for which player will start the majority of games for each team next year:

-Buffalo Bills - Andrew Luck
-Carolina Panthers - Jimmy Clausen
-Seattle Seahawks - Charlie Whitehurst
-San Francisco 49ers - Ryan Mallett
-Arizona Cardinals - Donovan McNabb
-Jacksonville Jaguars - David Garrard
-Washington Redskins - Michael Vick
-Minnesota Vikings - Jake Locker
-Oakland Raiders - Jason Campbell
-Philadelphia Eagles - Kevin Kolb

I think the most interesting team when it comes to QB and a possible top 10 pick is the Bengals. Not the Cowboys, not the Panthers, not the Bills, not anyone else.

I have seen Carson Palmer play this year. I don't care what his stats say, he is not good anymore. Maybe he isn't terrible, and maybe he'll return to better form at some point...but really, he's been in a downward spiral ever since his knee got destroyed.

Even if they stick with Carson, their back up is Jordan Palmer. I'm sorry, but that is terrible. They better pick a quarterback at some point in the draft

If the vikings win a few more games i'm extremely confidant that Locker wont get by the Seattle pick, and i would say your guess that Whitehurst (or even Hasselbeck) would be the starter is right too while Jake sits a year.

I admit I don't watch every Bengals game, but I follow them as close as I can. I like Palmer. He seems like a solid guy, but I think the Bengals should make a change at QB next season.

Am I wrong on this?

Pudge, do most Bengals agree with you and think that Palmer's not a big problem for Cincy?

I can't believe Seattle spent that much for Charlie Whitehurst, the dude is awful. They need to admit they were on drugs and take the best Quarterback available.

I wouldn't do it....I know Locker has fallen for so many people, but there is just something to Mallett I don't trust. I know how NFL teams think in that he's got tools and can be molded, but I'm still so wary of him.

Michael Vick-Oakland Raiders
They outbid everybody and get Vick. He is a good fit there and I'm not just talking about his 40 time. They won't want a rookie, they get a big arm, and the best quarterback they can get to forget about Russell.

Donovan McNabb-Minnesota Vikings
Don't have enough money to sign a top guy, won't pick high enough to get a top 3, so they sign McNabb and live with his bad accuracy because he has a big arm to get it to Rice and Harvin and has experience.

Kevin Kolb-Philadelphia Eagles
Andy Ried goes with Kolb.

Jason Campbell-Arizona Cardinals
They aren't ready to draft another QB just yet, aren't confident enough in the top free agents to pay more than everyone else, so they settle for Campbell, a compromise with some experience, some upside, maybe long term starter, maybe loses job to Derek Anderson.

Alex Smith-Carolina Panthers
They bring in Smith to start but are hoping/expecting Clausen takes the job and Smith seamlessly transitions to career backup.

(R) Andrew Luck-Buffalo Bills
Luck declares and goes #1 to the Bills, starts day 1.

(R) Jake Locker-Cleveland Browns
They like McCoy but they love Locker. McCoy either is an afterthought and a backup for awhile or he pulls a Drew Brees (to a lesser extent) and the Browns trade him.

(R) Ryan Mallett-San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco gets a big, strong armed QB to deliver the ball to some dangerous weapons they have been developing. They will like him for the old school kind of offense they are putting together. He can sit back in the pocket behind Iupati, Davis and co.

(R) Cam Newton-Cincinatti Bengals
They love his upside and aren't in any rush to push Carson Palmer out. If he' going to play any WR this makes a lot of sense as well, but I made the pick thinking strictly QB - I'm pretty sure the team drafting him will think the same way.

(R) Christian Ponder-Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars make the most sense to me as a team that will want a QB but not bad enough to spend a high pick on him and don't need a starter, just see if they can develop him behind Garrard and maybe motivate Garrard in the process.

Jacksonville hasn't selected a single QB in the draft since Leftwich was drafted. GM Gene Smith has all but come out and yelled from the mountaintops that they're taking a QB at some point in the first two rounds.

Didn't the owner yell that last year with Tim Tebow?

Could not agree more, i think a 5th for a guy who had never started a game in the NFL would have made more sense. Carroll has thrown an enormous amount of #### at the wall in the hopes that some of it sticks, this was not one of his better moves.

As for the attention given Whitehurst here i hope it didnt take the Giants game to open eyes to the problem there, Seahawks fans new it was a issue before that. In a perfect world they resign Hasselbeck for a year and draft Jake Locker with the plan to sit him for a year.

Just knowing how NFL teams tend to bungle these things, I'd say the more likely outcome is that they let Hasselbeck go, expect Whitehurst to hold the job while Locker develops, suck under Whitehurst, and then force Locker out there before they ideally would.

Good point, Charlie could play while the line gets better, actually the O-line might be pretty good next year, they didnt give up a sack against the Giants with a bunch of retreads in there and next year they'll have a healthy Okung, Unger and probably another fairly early pick or free agent plugged in.

I know there is sentiment that you dont draft a guy just because he's a hometown boy but Jake fits a huge need, he's probably approaching underrated status and i know for a fact that Pete likes him. It is also a given that Paul Allen likes him, he likes everything Seattle.

Am I wrong on this?

Pudge, do most Bengals agree with you and think that Palmer's not a big problem for Cincy?
I'd say you're wrong. Palmer hasn't been great, but he's been far from terrible. He's not at all what is holding the team back. Offensively the receivers have been far worse. If people don't know, how receivers play affects the QB in a big way. Could the team be winning with perfect QB play? Sure, anybody could. Would they be winning with good receiver play? Yea, they'd probably be 5-3 or 6-2 (depending on how some games would have closed.) Just because Carson isn't a Top 3 QB in football doesn't mean he's not a pretty decent starter, it's not a game of extremes. Palmer could start for at least 10+ around the league and I'm not talking about in 2005 form, I'm talking about this season.

He's thrown some ****** balls, like almost every QB that isn't elite. Carson put us in position to win every game but the New England game but the team has absolutely shot themselves in the foot. Jaws touched on it last night, sometimes he looks like one of the best QBs in football still. He'll catch fire and when his receivers catch balls this offense really gets rolling. He panics when he doesn't have anything available & has thrown some questionable balls. He's not fast, he's not elusive, and he needs a pocket to throw. He's not one of the league's best, but if anyone were to consider him one of the league's worse starting QBs it'd be an absolute joke.

I know the Bengals pretty well, they won't be rushing Carson out at the end of the season... that will be Chad and T.O., neither of whom I'd expect back for another season. Unless Owens makes huge strides and actually cares to put in the time to build trust with his new QB, I really don't see anyway it'd work out. Funny, but WRs has cost us more games this year than the Quarterback. Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Miami, and Atlanta all come to mind when thinking of games that could have been won if not for bonehead penalties (yes, on the receivers), ill-timed drops, and mis-run routes. It's really tough for a QB to be on point when his receivers are just doing what they want to do. Carson just needs that control over the team back, and thats as easy as getting T.O. and Chad out of the huddle.

Carson definitely has shown signs of age, he really doesn't move how an NFL QB needs to be able to these days. He's still a very accurate, strong-armed passer who is capable of threading the needle and putting the team on his back. It just seems like the Bengals are in the midst of a power struggle between the coaching-Carson Palmer and Ocho/T.O. who prefer to be the face of the team (yet isolate themselves on the sideline.) Our face of the team are the least involved players on the team, they work hard for each-other, not for their teammates.

Those of you who have seen just clips of Bengals games, or one/two on the season will think a QB to Cincy makes sense. Still, I'd say the only chance of that happening is if Carson absolutely tanks the rest of the season. People want a reason for the Bengals' slide from power with no major injuries. Point to the pass-rush first (7 sacks in 8 games) and then miscues from our pass-catchers. Somewhere down that line is Carson not playing his best football all the time, but as I said, it's absolutely down the line. If the Bengals wind up with a Top 10 pick, look for a DE or WR. If Carson lays an egg in 2011, then you go QB from there. Palmer's definitely shown he's got enough left in the tank to play good football.. he just needs some help from his running game, his receivers, his OL, and his defense... none of which have been close to what people expected.

Also Dan LeFevour is the Bengals backup.

No, he said something along the lines of "He could help out the ticket situation..." and then everyone including Scott Wright took off with that, not realizing that he doesn't factor in to the draft process. Gene Smith makes the picks.

this is so hard because so much depends on coaching changes. Guys like Del Rio and Chilly that may or may not get fired affect this greatly. If Del Rio stays, you gotta believe Garrard will probably keep his starting job and they will probably wait to draft a guy til the 2nd. I could see Chilly not taking a QB and letting Tavaris have another shot...

If I had to guess, these are what I'd guess for players who start the most games based on team:

Buffalo Bills - Fitzpatrick/Luck - I'm guessing Fitzgerald starts out the starter but they go to Luck after Fitzpatrick doesn't get anything going in the win column but I could see an even 8 starts a piece.
Carolina Panthers - Jimmy Clausen? This one depends so much on the coach who replaces Fox. I'm going to guess Clausen will get his shot to beat out a veteran like Pennington or Bulger regardless of who takes over but its not like whoever comes in has a ton invested in Clausen. They could easily draft another QB early, second round picks aren't hard to part with (see Miami and John Beck/Pat White).
Seattle Seahawks - Charlie Whitehurst - I think he'll get his chance and if it doesn't work out Carroll can get his guy next year (Barkley).
San Francisco 49ers - Michael Vick - They have the weapons, why gamble on another rookie QB when you can get a real one now?
Arizona Cardinals - Donovan McNabb - Don't really like the fit in Whiz's offense but they like Skelton and Hall enough that they'll pursue a veteran over drafting someone new.
Jacksonville Jaguars - David Garrard - Ryan Mallett will be behind him for the whole year.
Washington Redskins - Jake Locker - fits what Shanahan likes in a QB and as of now I'd say they are looking at Sexy Rexy as their starter for next year...
Minnesota Vikings - Tavaris Jackson - For some reason, I see the Vikings finishing strong enough for Chilly to keep his job and that means Tavaris Jackson because I don't see McNabb or Vick tying their last contract to Chilly.
Oakland Raiders - Jason Campbell - If he keeps playing like he has the last couple of weeks, he'll get an extension. Possible Newton destination.
Philadelphia Eagles - Kevin Kolb - He'll get his shot eventually. If they sign Vick to a long-term deal, look for Kolb to be in another uniform, Cardinals would be a perfect fit...
