New GM means new direction in Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers brass have opted to go in a different direction and have hired former New Orleans Saints director of football administration, Diabsoule. He had this to say upon officially becoming the new GM for a division rival: "The Carolina Panthers have been a strong franchise since first coming into the league. I am grateful for the opportunity presented to me here in Charlotte and will be aggressively pursuing all avenues available to us this offseason to get the Panthers back where they belong: on top of the NFC South and in Super Bowl contention".

There appears to be a lot of work ahead of him as the Panthers finished with the worst record in the NFL this season and hold the first pick in the draft. They are also without their second round pick (pick #33) due to a trade with New England last year. That has not deterred Diabsoule from speaking boldly about the future in Carolina. "We will be actively seeking trade opportunities to build this team through the draft. Right now we are not looking at trading the #1 pick in the draft but if a team blows us away with an offer then we will look into it".

There is no speculation right now as to who the Panthers are looking at with the first pick. "Right now, if we maintain the first pick in the draft, we will take Andrew Luck out of Stanford. He's a once in a lifetime product that can be the face of the franchise. We have conducted several interviews with him and absolutely love him as a fit for our team. He will be our selection if we hold onto that pick" said Diabsoule.

While it looks like they will be with that pick there are several teams that have called to inquire about the cost of the first pick due to Luck being highly coveted. "We have been in preliminary discussions with several franchises. Nothing has been established and if we do trade the pick then it will be for the best possible offer" Diabsoule was quoted as saying.

Lions extend OT Backus; CB Houston too

Chris McCosky / The Detroit News

Allen Park --Just days before the 2011 NFL Draft the Detroit Lions have announced contract extensions for two players.

Backus, who still has one year left on the six-year contract he signed prior to the 2006 season, signed a 2-year, $18 million extension. The deal includes $7.5 million in guarantees. The contract extension will keep Backus in a Lions uniform through the 2013 season.

Backus had the best year of his career this past season, allowing only 3.5 sacks and committing just three penalties all season. Despite having his ups and downs throughout his career, Backus has started all 160 games at left tackle since being drafted by the Lions in 2001. Barring a freak injury, it looks like he can add 48 more games to that streak.

Cornerback Chris Houston, who was acquired from Atlanta before last season for a sixth-round pick, was re-signed by the team. Houston signed a 3-year deal. The monetary terms of the contract were not immediately available. Houston is expected to be the #2 or the nickel cornerback for the Lions next year, depending on which direction they go in the draft.

Vikings announce new GMs and Head Coach

The Minnesota Vikings have announced who will lead their team into the future. The team announced today that Prock and marshallb will be the co-GMs. The two only said that they "were excited about the opportunity and were grateful to Zygi Wilf and his family and the whole Vikings organization for the chance that we're given." Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said that the GMs would have full say over the coaching search.

The co-GMs got together and talked over the situation, and came to the assumption that the team's best option moving forward was to stick with Leslie Frazier. Prock said "I like Frazier as our coach, the team plays hard under him, and defensive minded coaches love to run the ball, which is what this team is built for and should have been doing for a long time."

Flight of Fitz?

Rumors out of the Arizona is that Larry Fitzgerald may be on the trade block. While it would take a lot to acquire the star WR the team is considering all options for the franchise moving forward. GM Marcus Fenikz had this to say, "While Fitz is nearly untouchable we have to do a favor to ourselves as an organization to see what offers are out there."

Ravens GMs Back in Business

Baltimore, M.D - The Ravens are proud to announce that renowned Co-GMs A Perfect Score (APS) and TACKLE have retained control of the Ravens front office and are ready to participate in yet another NFLDC Forum Mock. Known for their aggressive style of drafting and willingness to move up or down depending on how the board falls, APS and TACKLE have shown a knack for manipulating the mock draft process and almost always end up with a stellar class of rookies. Back again, they plan to approach the Forum Mock with the same tenacity and determination they always do.

In other news, the Ravens have announced the unexpected resigning of offensive tackle Jared Gaither. Though it at first seemed as though Gaither would be shipped out for a pick, contract negotiations took a leap forward when Gaither agreed to stay in Baltimore if he was restored to his former position of left tackle. GMs APS and TACKLE agreed that famous lineman Michael Oher would be better utilized on the right side, and Gaither signed a 4 year contract extension worth approximately 36 million dollars. This signing helps restore the Ravens offensive line to its 2009 status as one of the best young lines in the league. With offensive guard Ben Grubbs also signing an extension, the Ravens look poised to continue with their powerful running games and hope to protect franchise QB Joe Flacco better in the future.

Furthermore, early word out of the Ravens organization is that both Cam Cameron and Greg Mattison will be let go in the near future. The Ravens have confirmed that former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips will take over the defensive coordinator job. No word on who will replace Cameron, if he is indeed let go. The Ravens were mum as to the future of their offensive coordinator.

BRUCE ARIANS FIRED

We have learned that offensive cordinator Bruce Arians has been let go of his duties for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Arians, the OC since 2007, had an inability to make in game adjustments and calls. His lack of points, despite high offensive numbers, were a real concern for Steelers GM HinesWardJr.

"We appreciate everything Bruce has done for our organization, but we are not where we want to be on offense. We wish Bruce the best of luck in his future."

HinesWardJr, Dan Rooney, and Mike Tomlin will be gathering a list of potential coaches for their vacancy.

Too Much Luck To Pass Up

Charlotte, N.C. -- Early rumors from inside the Carolina Panthers organization indicate that they will select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft.

Luck, the prototypical quarterback, possesses an excellent pedigree, super accuracy, strength, and touch, excellent build, and has played against elite Pac-10 competition while being coached by who many consider one of the best college coaches around.

While this may strike some as adding an unneeded luxury since Carolina drafted their supposed quarterback of the future last year when they selected Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame with their second round pick, Panthers G.M. Diabsoule has gone on record stating that Luck is a once-in-a-lifetime prospect that could turn a franchise around.

The Panthers have several trade possibilities open to them as many teams have been interested in trading up for the opportunity to draft the Stanford junior but Carolina holds the keys to the castle and rumors have it that they are demanding a king's ransom for the 1st pick in the draft, a ransom that not many teams, if any, are willing to pay.

Raiders Are Willing

Oakland Raiders GM RaiderNation has told the media today he is willing to trade for a veteran OT. "I feel that Veldheer can take the LT spot for us, but RT is still an issue. We are looking around for a veteran who can help in the run blocking. We plan to slide Langston Walker to RG if a deal can be worked out"

RaiderNation also address the draft plans. "Right now we are planning on letting the draft playout what we will do. If a certain player(s) fall we will contact teams. We have alot of needs but getting another impact rookie that can start from day 1 like (Rolando) McClain or (Lamarr) Houston or Jared Veldheer is what we need."

As for the trade block," Right now we have OLB Thomas Howard, DT John Henderson, CB Chris Johnson and RG Cooper Carlisle are guys we can trade right now."

Seahawks nab Norm Chow for offensive coordinator

Pete Carroll told media today that Norm Chow will be joining his staff. Chow was working as offensive coordinator at UCLA and worked for the Titans before that.

There are rumors the Seahawks are working out a trade for a former Trojan, stay tuned.

Raiders Trade for QB Jimmy Clausen

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Oakland Raiders have agreed to trade LB Thomas Howard and their 4th round pick to the Carolina Panthers for QB Jimmy Clausen. Jimmy Clausen was drafted last year in the 2nd round by Carolina, but after selecting the cant miss prospect this year in QB Andrew Luck, they decided to ship out Clausen. Clausen was thought highly of by current Raiders GM RaiderNation. He projected Clausen as a top 15 pick, instead he fell to the 2nd.

"We have brought in QB Jimmy Clausen today in a trade. Right now the QB job is open between Campbell, Gradkowski and Clausen. We intend to have Clausen as our QB for the future, and if he performs well enough in off season programs he could be the QB right now."

LB Thomas Howard who was once thought of maybe a Pro Bowl caliber LB was a back up last year, mostly playing on special teams. The Raiders changed defensive schemes, move toward more big LB's compared to Howard who is 240lbs and more of a pass coverage LB.

Seahawks trade for Vince Young, cut Hasselbeck

After a rough season in Tennessee it was obvious Jeff Fisher and Vince Young could not coexist any longer. The Titans found a taker for the 27 year old QB in the Seahawks. Seattle traded their 2nd and 5th round pick for Vince Young and the Titans third round pick.

At his press conference today Pete Caroll said "Seattle isn't winning very many football games and Vince just wins gamezzzzzz,"

The Seahawks hope Carroll's coaching style will help Young get his career on track. Carroll got a first hand look at what Vince was capable of in the 2006 Rose Bowl game.

To make room for Young on the roster the Seahawks released veteran Matt Hasselbeck. Back up Charlie Whitehurst was visibly frustrated by the move when confronted by reporters.

STEELERS LOCK UP WOODLEY AND TAYLOR, ALMOST HAVE A TRADE?

Steelers GM HinesWardJr announced today that they have reached a 5 year contract extention on Pro Bowl OLB LaMarr Woodley this afternoon. Financial terms were not released at this moment, but it's expected to be in the 60million dollar range, with 10-15 in guarentees. Woodley, 26, has 34 sacks since becoming the starting OLB in 2008.

Ike Taylor also recieved an extention of 3 years. Taylor, 30, has been the Steelers' best man to man cover corner over the last 5 years. He was due for a new contract and gotten one.

Rumors are surrounding Pittsburgh that the Steelers are close to an agreement for a trade with an AFC team. The team or player(s) have not been released at this time. We will release anything that comes up when we recieve them.

Vikings Move up to Grab Quarterback of the Future

The Minnesota Vikings traded up with the Washington Redskins, moving up from pick number 12 to number 9, giving up only a fourth round pick number 108; to snag quarterback Ryan Mallett from Arkansas. co-GM marshallb said that "it was something we felt we had to do. We knew that there was no chance that Ryan fell past both the Redskins and the Titans, so we got proactive and made our move."

It is believed that the Vikings are working out long term deals with several players, including Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice, and Chad Greenway, and maybe even more. Those deals are also likely to be announced at the team press conference this afternoon which will introduce Mallett to the media.

Red Birds Taking Flight

With the 6th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals proudly selected Heisman winner, Cam Newton, QB our of Auburn. GM Marcus Fenikz had this to say, "While most people only notice the amazing plays he makes every week with his legs, his arm is simply untouchable. That thing is a cannon, can throw 50 yards on a rope, reminds us a bit of Mike Vick. While he is a project to claim that any rookie entering the NFL doesn't need to to adjust is ignorant." Head coach Ken Whisenhunt had this to say, "The man is a winner you can see it on the field and you can see it in his eyes. The media can say what ever they want about him but if there is one thing I know is that nothing will stop him from winning". Arizona is still expected to bring in a vet QB to compete for the starting job.

Big Al Returns to AFC South

The Indianapolis Colts made an uncharacteristic move today, acquiring controversial defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth from the Washington Redskins in exchange for their 4th round pick (113th Overall). The Colts were desperate for defensive tackle help as many of their recent picks haven't worked out, Fili Moala, Quinn Pitcock, and Terrance Taylor to name a few. Haynesworth off-field issues are well-documented but the Colts brass feels that the veteran leadership and solid locker room atmosphere that they possess, as well as a return to a 4-3 scheme and the ability to play for a winner, will be able to keep Big Al in check and have him return to his former glory.

Ravens Stay True to Word, Get Aggressive and Add WR Jones

Baltimore, M.D - True to their pre-draft words, the Baltimore Ravens were very aggressive on the first day of the 2011 NFL Draft, trading up 15 spots to select Alabama WR Julio Jones.

"We really felt like Julio was a special player who could add a dynamic presence to our offense" said GM TACKLE. "He brings speed, playmaking ability, and most importantly a sense of physicality to our WR core." Worth noting is that this core already contains perhaps the most physical WR in the NFL, Anquan Boldin. The Ravens hope Jones, who is raw in some technical aspects, can learn from Boldin and become a true #1 target as he progresses, allowing Boldin to slowly transition to a #2 role where he has shown an ability to succeed in the past.

The Ravens traded picks 27, 91, and 123 to the Redskins for pick 12, which they used on Jones. The Ravens also sent OLB Jarrett Johnson, a starter, to the Redskins in the deal. "We felt the value was very good on the trade up. We asked around, and some teams had asked for our second round pick in the deal, and I was very reluctant to give it up. This draft has value into that round, so we decided to find a trade partner who would accept some later round picks as compensation. We're sad to see Jarrett go, he was great for the organization and we wish him the best in the future" said GM APS.

It is believed that the Ravens will shift ILB Jameel McClain to his more natural position of OLB while letting former UDFA Dannell Ellerbe start alongside future Hall of Famer Ray Lewis.

Jets stay at 26 and draft Miami Hurricanes Defensive Lineman, Allen Bailey.

Bailey taking down Clemson Qb Kyle Parker in 2010

After rumors of the Jets trading down, the Jets decided to stay put and draft DE Allen Bailey from Miami (FL). When Coach Rex Ryan was asked about the selection he said, We got our guy. Hes big, tough and physical. Hes a Jet. I expect him to be starting opposite Shaun Ellis in 3-4 sets. Were going to have some fun moving him around the line in our 43 sets. I cant wait to coach him. The Jets wanted to make a splash early in the draft and they certainly did so with the selection of Allen Bailey.

POUNCEY BROTHERS UNITE

Coming into the 2011 NFL Draft, Michael Pouncey did not know where his future may lie. Later on in the evening, he soon found out. Michael, Maurkice Poucney's twin brother, was selected 30th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team Maurkice plays for.

"It's a dream come true playing in the NFL. It's also a dream come true to be playing along side my twin brother once again. I am truely blessed and thank the Pittsburgh Steeler organization for drafting me to play. I will give them all I have", Michael says.

Pittsburgh Steelers GM HinesWardJr says, "Michael brings toughness, skill, and hard work to our organization. Along side Maurkice, our offensive line is 100 times better. We now will be able to run the football the way we want to. I am proud to be a Pittsburgh Steeler with this selection of a great young man."

Pouncey is expected to start at RG at his time in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has had a tough time filling that spot once Kendall Simmons got diagnosed with injuries and diabetes.
