If you look at what happened, Sage was on his way to REPLACING Carr when he got hurt. So said the Houston Chronicle
Sage Rosenfels would've been the Texans' starter for the final month of 2006 if he hadn't fractured his hand, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The Texans' staff seems to believe Rosenfels, who completed nearly 70 percent of his passes in limited action last year, is now worthy of a shot to start. We suspect it'll be against Jake Plummer and/or a first-day rookie.

I don't know that Sage is the answer, neither do the Texans but they were getting ready to find out when he got hurt and they had to continue (as a lost cause) with carr. Had they gotten more of a look at Rosenfels, and he impressed, Schaub would probably not be here.
