We got Glover Quinn at safety, Houston back on a 5 year deal, Levy back 3 year deal, Jason Jones 3 year deal, Bush 4 year deal, restructured Suh this year, tendered Young and Fox, re-signed Bel, Durham, Silva, Chapas and got Spievey/Osgood back at the minium with vet deductions included for a 400 K cap number.

Busy 2 days. Bush, Jones and Quinn make us better and getting Houston back long term was huge. Wide open for DE, CB or LT for the draft still.

Apparently Suhs restructure saved us around 9 million in cap room. I really wish I knew how the cap worked.

All they did was move his cap hit back. They'll have to restructure him again next year most likely because his cap hit is now going to be around 20.

Love the moves so far tho. Quinn is veey solid in coverage and durable. Starting to look more and more like Ziggy or an OT will be our pick. Jarvis jones the darkhorse

Hopefully a legitamite LT this time around. I'd love if we got Fisher.

Teams restructure and reduce the salary cap hit by converting basic salary into a Restructure Bonus which can be spread out over a maximum of 5 years or (if less than 5) the remaining years on the contract. The same rules apply for an Option Bonus or Signing Bonus.

A Roster or Workout Bonus is different in that all the money earned from these bonuses goes towards that year's cap and can't be spread out.

eg) Suh's contract ran from 2010-15 and these are real figures:

2013:
Base Salary $12,150,000
Bonus Money $6,022,500
Cap Hit: $18,172,500

2014:
Base Salary $11,550,000
Bonus Money $6,022,500
Cap Hit: $17,572,500

2015:
Base Salary $3,505,000
Bonus Money $5,897,500
Cap Hit: $9,402,500

2011 Roster Bonus: $7.195 million
All of this money went on the 2011 Cap

2011 Option Bonus: $17.35 million
Divide 17.35/5 = $3,470,000 each year's cap from 2011-15

2012 Restructure Bonus: $9.71 million
Divide 9.71/4 = $2,427,500 for each year's cap from 2012-15

2012-14 Workout Bonus: $125,000
Add $125,000 to each year's cap from 2012-14

**
Now, to keep the math simple, if Suh converts $9M of his 2013 Basic Salary of $12,150,000 into a Restructure or Signing Bonus then that $9M can be spread out over the remaining 3 years of his contract (2013-15) and his Basic Salary is now reduced to $3,150,000. Suh's happy because he banks that bonus money immediately. The Lions are happy because Suh's cap figure is reduced for 2013 which allows them just enough cap space to sign free agents. The downside however is that Suh's cap figure will increase in 2014 and 2015.

The new hypothetical figures would then be:

2013:
Base Salary $3,150,000 (reduced by $9m)
Bonus Money $9,022,500 (increase of $3m)
Cap Hit: $12,172,500 (reduced by $6m)

2014:
Base Salary $11,550,000
Bonus Money $9,022,500 (increase of $3m)
Cap Hit: $20,572,500 (increase of $3m)

2015:
Base Salary $3,505,000
Bonus Money $8,897,500 (increase of ($3m)
Cap Hit: $12,402,500 (increase of $3m)

In this example the Lions have reduced Suh's cap figure next season by $6m, which allows them enough room to sign Bush, Houston, Quin, Jones etc. The downside is they have to increase Suh's cap figure for the remaining two seasons on his contract - $3m for each year.

This is why teams who restructure too much to remain competitive year after year will eventually get caught with cap problems.

So the consensus seems to be that Avril is overrated.

He's a perfect scheme fit and the LEO position does not need to be a good run defender.

But I've been informed he played LE and will have to move to RE on first and second down.

I don't know how you can argue with his production though.

Thoughts?

Wow, just saw the Avril deal. 2 yrs 15 mil. He must be feeling stupid right now. He made 10 last year and that deal is still a lot of money but the Lions offered him double that.

It seems like a love-hate relationship between Avril & Detroit since the franchise tag. Always a backhanded complement to him from the brass, or a praise for the fans from Cliff with a zinger in there about how he could play more standing up in space(knock on coaches) etc in another scheme.

If Paul Kruger got 5 yrs/ $40M that set the FA market in 13 for DE. Avril is solid, i like his skills in this D. BUT Suh has assisted in his stats in almost always drawing double teams. but he can be replaced IMO, if he opts to go to Indy, or Tampa etc.

Jarvis Jones 1, Alex Okafor 2 would quiet things in the coming years about Avril & Durant.

They went to work, that's for sure! The energy in Allen Park today must have been amazing, they hit on every player.... Time will tell if this team will mesh & be a contender. Very interesting activity early on, the draft is sooooo key this year. I'm pumped (again!) but probably drinking the blue kool aid ;-)

I thought they had a great day today. No deals are outrageous. If they could fit in one more DB I'd be ecstatic.

I'm thrilled with all the signings. Houston and Quinn help a ton and allows our secondary to be better than last season since the rookies should only get better and Delmas was hurt anyway.

Bush's skillset will allow him to play at a high level for the next couple of years. I'd probably rather move him in the slot and 3rd down though for his last 2 years...hopefully he'll give us a Marshall Faulk threat.

Jones gives us a potential edge-setting/run stopping LE or rotational DT with decent enough athleticism and scheme knowledge.

Dline shouldn't be too far off, the LBing corps should be alright, and the secondary might actually be improved since Quinn played a higher percentage of snaps than almost anyone in the league last year.

Fisher/DE/S then C, WR, and maybe TE if we have to cut Scheffler.

Couple CB's in FA that would work for me in the D would be Antoine Cason &/or Keenan Lewis.

(Desmond Trufant in the 2nd round would work too)

I am very interested to see if we still get delmas back. That would give us a very good Safety duo next year

I have little doubt that we will need to restructure Stafford and Suh next year in order to just keep our own guys. Although I'm not sure who will be a FA, but we are definitley looking at a bad cap situation in the next few years.

We need to hit on some late round picks in order to alleviate some of this cap pressure

After the absurd contract Eric Wright got last year from Tampa, Houston is an absolute steal at that price.

Great day of signings IMO. Jones is a great scheme fit and the secondary is in better shape than I thought it woudl be heading into the draft. Quin is a very solid S and the pass D wasn't too bad when Houston and Delmas were both healthy. Now get me one or two more safeties. Delmas and a rookie would be nice.

If I could sign two more guys(assuming we have limited funds), I'd like Jackson back and I'd like Darius Heyward Bey. I'm assuming DHB would take very little to sign. I'd like to gamble on a WR with his size and speed though.

We need to hit on some late round picks in order to alleviate some of this cap pressure
We should have some flexibility. Hopefully less dead money on the cap and more cheap rookies. Suh and STafford will have to be extended soon though and we can restructure CJ if need be. Maybe Bush or Houston too.

Lions right now will be around 10.9 million under the cap in 2014 with 45 under contract(counting the 2013 draft and Suh restructure) less any Likely to be Earned bonuses . And if they extend Suh and Stafford we'll have a ton of room.

Pettigrew and Shaun Hill are the only important free agents besides extended Suh and Stafford. However, got to start thinking about upping Fairley too as 2014 is his last year.

I'll take 700 yards for several first downs, 5-6 TDs and don't fumble at 2 crucial times like in 2012. Plus some better run blocking.

Wonder if we will go find a LT since backups retired. I'd prefer we draft fisher.

Does anyone know what our cap situation is after these recent signings and restructuring?

Also, does Jahvid Best still count against our cap?
