People are worried about weather impacting the NY Superbowl in a few years, but I guarantee you they will be better equipped to handle any snow than Dallas right now. They're just clueless.

In Minnesota, you need a lot more than 4-5 inches to shut ANYTHING down. If we get 4 or 5 inches, no one even blinks. We make a big deal with we are getting a foot or two.

To be fair, considering how many accidents are caused by snow in the northern US I'd say they probably should shut down more schools and businesses. It's just people are stubborn and think it's no big deal because they drive around it all the time.

And honestly, I live in a place that gets a ton of snow in the northeast and people still freak out anytime they see snow in the weather report. You should see people at the grocery store the day before snow storm stocking up on food and salt.

In this most recent big storm that hit basically the entire eastern half of the country, I got calls over the course of about 2 days from newspaper pages looking for their weather pages from us so they could move up their print time and get out early.

There was one from Indiana that I recall getting.....and all of the 20493385 others were from down south. (Virginia southward I'd say.) Places that were getting like...2 inches at worst.

Meanwhile, here, we got a layering of ice that made it so you damned near needed a pick axe to get the ice off your car. Me and one of the meteorologists were standing there bullshitting in the parking lot until our car defrosters managed to melt the layer of ice enough to scrape it off...

We didn't shut down. Penn State didn't shut down. No Pennsylvania northward newspapers called for early deadlines.......and the roads were actually reasonably well salted and plowed.

It snows and people worry, but we still get our **** accomplished. Mostly because we're equipped to handle it. We aren't sprinkling sand on the roads and the like...

Congrats, whatever-state-you-live-in deals with a lot of snow each year! Little known fact about North Texas: we don't get much snow. In fact, over the past three years, Dallas has probably had more snowfall than the 10 prior to that. So, yes, let's spend a whole lot of money on equipment and labor hours! That way, people in other states won't result to childish name calling due to a lack of understanding how things are run in Texas!

But this isn't some random occurrence. It seems to happen more and more over the last few years. Maybe it's time to at least have a better plan in place.

The amount of snow we get around here means absolutely nothing to businesses and schools staying open, it all depends on when the snow is falling. If it snows over night, by morning plows have everything under control and there are no problems. If the snow starts in the early morning and continues into morning traffic hours that is when things start to get canceled and even then there needs to be at least a foot of snow or a massive amount of ice for anything to happen.

We get maybe 1 outright schools closed day per year here (had one on Wednesday this week...), usually they just leave everything open and cancel the buses though so its like go to school if you feel like it or your parents make you.

Glad I'm in university now though, they close shop so much more easily than public schools because they don't have the same over-night, early-morning on campus snow clearing capabilities that the city does for the public schools.

Don't they use large 2 or 3 axle dump trucks for patching those Texas roads, laying gravel, and picking up dead armadillos? Can't cost that much to order a plow blade for each one and fill the backs with salt.

Well, considering I can bare witness to how things are going in the area, it's quite all right. It's just easy for people to whine and moan about what's going on here because there is a Super Bowl being played. This is the worst winter storm in N. Texas since 1984. When it does snow those couple days of the year, it's never more than 3-4 inches. Last year, we had a freak storm that dumped a foot of snow on the area in a 24 hours period. They said that the weather calculations for that were astronomically improbable. All we deal with that slows people down is ice. So, we throw sand on it for traction and **** works just fine. I know this because I live here.

More importantly, this is a state with ridiculously low taxes. No one is going to pay extra so that the city can buy a bunch of **** for the couple days of the year we get ice.

Is there really this great of a disconnect in America?

Again, it wouldn't be worth it. All they close are schools because so many cars are in such a small area and there are too many around here to deal with conditions around them all. We have two bad weather days in the school year, rarely is more than one used.

Alright, I admit that my rant was kind of angry.....I apologize.

Part of it comes from how much work I have to do whenever the south gets snow, which is more frequently than given credit I think.

Like, a newspaper, say from one of the Carolinas will call....they want to move their access time up like 6 hours so they can print early and include cancellations and get their employees out safely.

....but they're getting like an inch of snow. I fill out the form, give it to all the departments who need to do something with it to get the page out...and they laugh and joke how big of pansies the area is being for shutting down. It's honestly kind of ridiculous.

And like....your hosting the Superbowl. That is probably one of the biggest things an area of this country can do in terms of wha they will make in profit.

I'd be willing to bet that people there would be spending millions of dollars more, pumping money into the local economy, if there wasn't snow or if it was dealt with intelligently. Instead it's falling on people, the roads are a mess, it's icy and slushy and nasty from everything I've read......that's terrible for business.

They should have had a better plan in place.

This wasn't foreseen until maybe last Friday or Saturday. And, even then, no one thought it was going to last the entire week. And of course this weather is bad for businesses, what ice/snow isn't? More importantly, what plan should they have? You would have to rather crazy or stupid to think that this winter event was expected. As I said before, there is no point in wasting the little tax money they collect on something that is best dealt with by simply letting it run its course.

I mean, if you're hosting the Superbowl...prepare for everything. Don't most of these towns have committees with tens of millions of dollars on hand to first lobby to host it and then to make sure everything goes smoothly?

"Rent" some extra slow plows from neighboring states or areas...have contingency plans with local companies to be ready for something like this.

They pay to have police escorts for the teams and much of the media, they have Homeland Security and other government organizations on hand in case of any kind of terrorist activity.

I think it's making them look bad due to unpreparedness. I doubt anything affects the actual game, but the entire region is losing much more money than it otherwise would if they would have had even some minor plans in place. Nobody sat there and thought "hey, perhaps it snows? I know it's rare, but it's not impossible."

Yes, again, when it snows here it's usually one, maybe two days a year. During which, this state is just fine. What's not normal is nearly half an inch of ice on everything and a few inches of snow. I am sure someone did think, "hey, it might snow" but I would put money on there being little concern that the worst storm in over 20 years was going to hit. It someone guessed this was going to happen, they're probably out buying lotto tickets. It makes this area "look bad" because people from other regions are here covering the game and aren't used to how things are done. These are the same people who complain that it's over 100 degrees and 70% humidity in the summer.

It all depends on the how your city functions I guess. We have no choice but to salt the roads here, we can't just shut everything down. There's way too much going on around here for everyone to just sit at home and drink some hot chocolate, ppl need to use the roads all the time.

If we were to just shut everything down, the loss of money from businesses etc would far exceed the money it would cost to invest in some salt and plows.

Things are just more laid back down there. I call down south some times to order equipment for our lab, and I noticed you guys talk sooooooo slow. It actually annoys me a lot haha.

But yeah, different strokes for different folks. It's not better or worse, just different. *shrug*
