Default Aldon Smith, DE / OLB, Missouri

What are your thoughts on him? how does he rank against the other top OLBS?

Saw a few clips and came away really impressed, but haven't seen him play in a game. He looks really natural and has some long arms. Does he remidn you guys of anyone in particular? I heard he's a boom/bust.

Thanks in advance.

Probably has the highest potential ceiling of the DEs in the class. Definitely higher than Kerrigan and the 3-4 guys. Think of him as the Jason Pierre-Paul of the draft, but honestly I think JPP's stock was what it was because of the school he came from, while Aldon has a few more questions to answer about whether or not he's a natural pro.

I wouldn't call him boom or bust, he's a high ceiling prospect that probably has a decent bust factor, I know that's almost rewording it but I wouldn't label him as such a prospect. we don't know if he's better suited for the 4-3 or 3-4 and his entire career path could depend on which defense he's drafted into.

I think Smith has some elite attributes that are better than any other pass rusher in the draft. He has an extremely rangy frame with huge branches for arms and can manipulate offensive linemen with them. He also has a very explosive first step. He needs to do a better job diagnosing plays and react quicker. Probably better suited to a 43 defense but does have the athleticism to translate to OLB.

I love him as a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 RE. In the games I saw, he diagnosed run/pass and play action superbly and was awesome in the open field. Instincts are absurdly underrated. I think he is one of the best players in the draft.

USF? yeah they're definitely one to hype their prospects [/sarcasm]. In all seriousness, there are a lot of similarities and some differences but Aldon had the production whereas JPP did not really.

I like Aldon, but JPP does alot of things more fluidly and stays extremely low for a guy of his size. I don't see as much of a freakish athlete in Aldon, but I do see alot of good things.

Mizzou and KC Chiefs fan. So guess who I'm hoping falls to 21 :)

Seriously, IMO, Aldon Smith is a pretty elite athlete given his size. I've read where some have compared him to Willie McGinnest as both play/played at about 6'5" 270. I think Aldon is in that same mold and can probably excel as a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB given his size and athleticism.

Guess the only question I have is what are the chances he's still there at 21 for my Chiefs to team with Tamba Hali?

When I said his school was the reason his stock was what it was, I didn't mean in a positive way. I meant that's what was holding him back from being a shoe-in for the first 12 picks.
