Default RaiderNations 4/14/11 2 Round Mock

Last mock I am doing before I do my final one. There are some surprising picks so I hope you are entertained.

Round 1

1 Carolina Panthers- Cam Newton QB Auburn*
It looking more and more like the Panthers will take Newton, who is a rare athlete at the QB position that can transform this franchise. That’s if he doesn’t have any more off the field problems.

2 Denver Broncos- Marcell Dareus DT Alabama*
Dareus will give Denver a building block for the defense at DT, he can be effective against the pass and run with the combination of size, strength and SEC experience. Dareus could be a huge boost to this bad defense.

3 Buffalo Bills- Nick Fairley DL Auburn*
Buffalo has made some questionable picks the past 2 drafts and here’s another. Fairley’s stock fallen some but he will replace Stroud and provide the pass rush they are looking for. Fairley could work out at DE in their 3-4 defense.

4 Cincinnati Bengals- Patrick Peterson DB LSU*
Johnathan Joseph future with the team is in question, and Peterson is the #1 overall prospect and could be too much to pass up on. Peterson will provide the Bengals with not only a very talented DB who can play CB or FS, but also as a return specialist.

5 Arizona Cardinals- Von Miller OLB Texas A&M
The Cardinals land the pass rusher they desperately need. Miller has had a great off season rising the boards with his performances at the combine and Senior Bowl. Miller will likely replace Joey Porter who should be released.

6 Cleveland Browns- AJ Green WR Georgia*
With no go to guy for McCoy, the Browns land Green here, who is the most talented WR in the draft this year. I can see them going DL here as well but Greens value is too high to pass on.

7 San Francisco 49ers- Robert Quinn DE/OLB UNC*
Very hard pick here but I think they want to replace Lawson who was a disappointment. Quinn could be the second coming of DeMarcus Ware and will give this defense a major boost. Quinn has some health issues but he might have too much potential to pass up.

8 Tennessee Titans- Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri*
It’s clear to me that the Titans want to add a franchise QB with the firing of Jeff Fisher. I’m not as high on Gabbert as others but he fit’s the mobile QB the Titans look for. Gabbert never had a standout season like most 1st round QB’s, but does have high potential.

9 Dallas Cowboys- Tyron Smith OT USC*
I don’t see Dallas staying at 9(trade up for PP or trade down) but if they do stay Tyron Smith is a big possibility. Tyron’s stock has risen over the past weeks with his great workouts and you know Jerry Jones wants to protect Romo better after last year.

10 Washington Redskins- Julio Jones WR Alabama*
The QB situation is unclear in Washington, and they will likely bring in a guy through the draft. With that plan in mind, adding a talented WR like Jones will only help that young QB succeed with this struggling franchise.

11 Houston Texans- Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska
Houston’s secondary was one of the worst ever last season, and with new DC Wade Phillips coming in you know they will provide him with talented. Prince is a steal here for the Texans and will give them a true #1 CB to build around.

12 Minnesota Vikings- Da’Quan Bowers DE Clemson*
Bowers stock is slowly falling, after his recent workout where he didn’t show great athleticism. Bowers could reenergize the dline and replace Edwards if he leaves through free agency.

13 Detroit Lions- Cameron Jordan DE Cal
No value in the secondary and OT for the Lions here, so they decide add a versatile DL who can make an impact at DT or DE. Jordan could be a monster next to Suh and should give the Lions more talent on defense to work with.

14 St. Louis Rams- JJ Watt DE Wisconsin*
The run of DE’s continue here with the Rams and Watt. Steve Spagnuolo loves versatile DLmen and Watt fit’s the bill at 6’6 292lbs, along with a non stop motor , 7 sacks and 21 TFL he recorded last year.

15 Miami Dolphins- Mark Ingram RB Alabama*
With Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both aging and contracts up, RB becomes a huge need. Mark Ingram could be a instant upgrade over the 2 and give Miami an experienced SEC RB who knows how to run the wildcat.

16 Jacksonville Jaguars- Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue
Jacksonville showed last year that if they like a prospect, they will draft him even if it’s a reach(which is the case here with Aldon Smith still being on the board). Kerrigan doesn’t stand out as a great athlete, but he still is able to get to the QB and could replace Kampman.

17 New England Patriots(f/OAK)-Mike Pouncey OL Florida
It’s no secret the Patriots like Florida prospects after the last years draft where they drafted 3 prospects who impacted the team. Pouncey likely will be another, who can help the Patriots interior OL regain dominance.

18 San Diego Chargers- Aldon Smith DE/OLB Missouri*
With Shawn Merriman now gone and Larry English not producing, a pass rusher could be what the Chargers look for here at 18. Smith could be very nice fit at OLB and is very good value here.

19 New York Giants- Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin
Hard pick here since the Giants don’t have 1 glaring need, so they go with one of the safer picks with Carimi. Carimi doesn’t have All Pro potential, but I think he can be a long time starter at RT and potentially LT.

20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Adrian Clayborn DE Iowa
The Bucs added 2 young interior DL last year, and here at 20 they should add a DE to complete the DL. Clayborn didn’t have the type of senior season most thought he would, but his stock is still high after some good workouts.

21 Kansas City Chiefs- Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College
There’s no value at NT, pass rusher and WR here so the Chiefs go with Castonzo to replace O’Callaghan/Richardson at RT. Castonzo’s combination of physical attributes and intangibles makes this pick make even some sense.

22 Indianapolis Colts- Nate Solder OT Colorado
It’s no secret the Colts need to start upgrading the OL, which will only make Peyton and the offence better. Solder is a project at LT that could have huge benefits in the Colts pass happy offence.

23 Philadelphia Eagles- Brandon Harris CB Miami*
With Ellis Hobbes retiring and the lack of depth already at CB, Brandon Harris is a very logical pick. Harris has everything you look for in a starting caliber CB and should see playing time early in his career.

24 New Orleans Saints- Cameron Heyward DL Ohio State
The next “Ironhead” is added to the Saints with Craig’s son Cameron Heyward here. Heyward would be a instant upgrade over the Saints lack of talent on the DL and pairing him with Ellis.

25 Seattle Seahawks- Jake Locker QB Washington
Even though I think Hasselbeck will return, a QB of the future still needs to be added. The Seahawks will have a lot of pressure to draft Locker who is a hometown favorite who still has some stock after falling from the #1 prospect of the draft to a mid 1st grade.

26 Baltimore Ravens- Jimmy Smith CB Colorado
The Ravens do love drafting senior players and Smith will be the next if he falls here. Smith fits in the Ravens man to man defensive scheme, and will replace one of the injured CB’s from last year.

27 Atlanta Falcons- Allen Bailey DE Miami
Other than John Abraham and Jonathan Babineaux, the Falcons have had little to no impact DLmen. Allen Bailey would give the Faclons high potential player that can see time at DE and DT.

28 New England Patriots- Muhammad Wilkerson DL Temple*
Since Richard Seymour was traded the Patriots defense has missed having a franchise type player at DE. Drafting Wilkerson here will give them youth and more talent to work with on the Dline which will make Belichick happy.

29 Chicago Bears- Corey Liuget DT Illinois*
With the recent release of former Pro Bowler Tommie Harris, its clear the Bears will likely add a DT this off season. Liuget is a local talent that compares to Tommie Harris during their last Super Bowl run.

30 New York Jets- Stephen Paea NT Oregon State
Kris Jenkins future with the Jets is unclear and he could retire, and even though Pouha has performed well at NT, it wont hurt to add another. Paea is definitely strong enough to do the job and could also see him as a DE in some fronts.

31 Pittsburgh Steelers- Derek Sherrod OL Mississippi State
I am sure Big Ben has told the front office he is tired of running for his life on pass plays, so expect a OLmen to be drafted early. Sherrod is good value here for the Steelers, and could fit at every position on the Oline except Center.

32 Green Bay Packers- Justin Houston OLB Georgia*
Clay Matthews might be the best pass rusher in the NFL after last years efforts to help this team win the Super Bowl, but they do still need a guy opposite of him. Justin Houston already has experience in the 3-4 scheme and has produced in the SEC.

Round 2

33 New England Patriots(f/CAR)- Brooks Reed DE/OLB Arizona
Pass rusher at OLB to help this Patriots defense regain form.

34 Buffalo Bills- Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA*
Talented OLB that could give the Bills a pass rusher they desperately need

35 Cincinnati Bengals- Ryan Mallet QB Arkansas*
Similar QB to Palmer, who’s days in Cincinnati are likely over.

36 Denver Broncos- Kyle Rudolph TE Notre Dame*
Big weapon for Tebow to develop with, that’s if Rudolph can stay healthy

37 Cleveland Browns- Christian Ballard DT Iowa
Fills the need at DT in their new 4-3 defense, Ballard has the measurables but still lacks consistency on the field

38 Arizona Cardinals- Aaron Williams DB Texas*
Fits as either a CB or FS for this bad defense, Williams is great value here at 38

39 Tennessee Titans- Marvin Austin DT UNC
Questionable pick here but could have great results at the end of the day, Austin could be the new Haynesworth in Tennessee

40 Dallas Cowboys- Rahim Moore DB UCLA*
Dallas’s secondary needs a lot of help, Moore gives them a starter at FS

41 Washington Redskins- Christian Ponder QB Florida State
It’s not a matter of if, but when they will go QB, Ponder seems like a great fit in their west coast offence

42 Houston Texans- Sam Acho DE/OLB Texas
New defense means they will need players to fit the new scheme, Acho seems like a great fit as a pass rusher

43 Minnesota Vikings- Andy Dalton QB TCU
Dalton’s stock has risen a lot since the end of the season, Vikings add their future QB here

44 Detroit Lions- Danny Watkins OL Baylor
For the Lions to be able to make the next step as a team they will need to protect Stafford, Watkins can be a instant starter for them

45 San Francisco 49ers- Ras-I Dowling CB Virginia
Clements could be gone and they don’t have much talent at CB, Dowling needs to stay healthy though to make this pick work out

46 Denver Broncos(f/ MIA)- Johnny Patrick CB Louisville
Champ Bailey is getting older and they need some depth at CB, Patrick could develop into a very good CB

47 St. Louis Rams- Titus Young WR Boise State
Bradford had a great rookie season even though he had bad WR’s, Young could give Bradford a stud wideout to develop with

48 Oakland Raiders- Martez Wilson OLB Illinois*
Very athletic LB that fit’s the bill as not only the type of prospect Al will draft, but fits as a pass rusher at OLB

49 Jacksonville Jaguars- Mason Foster LB Washington
Foster is one of my favorite prospects in this draft and is a steal here, Foster will give the Jags a starter anywhere at LB

50 San Diego Chargers- Leonard Hankerson WR Miami
Even though Jackson is back for another year I still think they add a playmaker at WR, Hankerson has helped himself a lot this off season

51 Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Greg Jones LB Michigan State
Tampa’s defense is getting younger and better, and Jones would only keep it going as a good fit at LB

52 New York Giants- Drake Nevis DT LSU
Good value for Nevis here, who would give the Giants some youth and depth at DT

53 Indianapolis Colts- Clint Boling OL Georgia
Another OLmen to help protect Manning, Boling seems like a good fit at either LG or RG

54 Philadelphia Eagles- Marcus Cannon OL TCU
Cannon has checked out medically and is still a 2nd round pick in my mind, he fit’s the big bodied type of guys the Eagles like on the oline

55 Kansas City Chiefs- Phil Taylor NT Baylor
I don’t expect Taylor to fall here, and KC is likely the favorite to trade up for him

56 New Orleans Saints- Mikel Leshoure RB Illinois*
The Saints need a young healthy RB to help stabilize this offence, Leshoure had a great junior season and could be a ROY candidate

57 Seattle Seahawks- Brandon Burton CB Utah*
With little talent and depth at CB, expect Seattle to go CB early, Burton has the size and speed to succeed in the NFL

58 Baltimore Ravens- Jon Baldwin WR Pittsburgh*
Some of the WR’s are free agents this year and they really need some youth, Baldwin doesn’t need to be a huge impact player at first but could be a seen as a steal here down the line

59 Atlanta Falcons- Jerrel Jernigan WR Troy
One of the best fits in the draft for what ATL is looking for, Jernigan can be a Percey Harvin type guy for them

60 New England Patriots- Orlando Franklin OT Miami
Another olinemen to develop as the eventual RT, Franklin could also help early as a LG or RG if needed

61 San Diego Chargers(f/NYJ)- Ben Ijalana OL Villanova
At times Rivers looked like he was running for his life in the back field, Ijalana can be a RT or OG for them

62 Chicago Bears- Rodney Hudson OL Florida State
The oline started to play better toward the end of the season last year, but adding a guy like Hudson as a future C or OG could be a very good pick here

63 Pittsburgh Steelers- Kenrick Ellis NT Hampton
Casey Hampton’s play is getting worse year after year and a future NT needs to be added, Ellis could be that guy

64 Green Bay Packers- Curtis Brown CB Texas
Woodson is getting older and adding some more depth seems like a good idea, Brown is a well rounded CB that projects as a starter at CB

The Bengals won't draft Peterson because they don't know Joseph future they were trying to bring him back before the CBA ran out. Bring in Peterson would ensure that Joseph would not come back. I don't see that pick happening.

Mallet is a terrible pick he is not a WC QB and with no mobility will get him killed in Cincinnati. He is like Carson but they want to get away from the Carson type QB and bring in a some what mobile QB.

even if Joseph does resign - how sick would their secondary be having peterson at FS.

The Lions would have to wait to the third to address their top two needs with this mock but I really like the two players you gave them. They need to build the lines up. Good mock.

The Seahawks have been linked to Dalton and Mallett - not Locker. Pete Carroll recruited Locker as a safety. He's going to bet his second NFL job on a guy he didn't think could play QB in the Pac-10? Doubtful.

Love Quinn in the first for the Niners. I see Dowling as more of a safety though, but either way you hit on positions of need.

Cam Heyward is solid, but I would prefer Kenrick Ellis in the second. I am just not high on Leshoure. In fact, I find myself not high on any of the top three prospects out of Illinois this year. If we miss out on Ingram, I am willing to hold off getting a back.

63 Pittsburgh Steelers- Kenrick Ellis NT Hampton
Casey Hampton’s play is getting worse year after year and a future NT needs to be added, Ellis could be that guy
Sherrod would be a solid pick. Fills a need and has a chance to contribute day one.

Ellis is not a need. Hampton had one of his best years last year. I agree a future replacement for 2 or 3 years down the road would be nice. But I wouldn't look for a replacement before OT, CB, and DE were all sured up. Curtis Brown or Jalil Brown would be a much better pick with Powe, Fua, Ian Williams, Chris Neild, or Anthony Gray later would be a better draft. Because after CB, then the Steelers will be looking DE not DT.

JJ Watt seems to me like the second coming of Adam Carriker in the Rams 4-3. Kerrigan and Smith are the better fits, there.
