Craziest thing that ever happened as a delivery driver -

I had been promoted to shift supervisor (I had the ability to open the cash register and make change - $1.25 extra an hour - no huge deal), anyhow...

A driver comes back with the pizza and says the crazy guy who ordered it refused it. When I asked why, he said because he didn't order from us (Pizza-Hut), he ordered from Dominoes. He cussed the driver out and told him to leave. I said give me the pizza and left to deliver it. As I pulled up at the house, I took off my hat and Pizza Hut shirt. I handed him the pizza and he asked why it was in a Pizza-Hut box. I told him we ran out and had to borrow some. He asked " Are you serious?" I told him it happens all the time and we borrow from each other on a regular basis. He handed me the payment and that was the end of it.
I was hoping somehow your story was about a sausage surprise pizza being delivered to a cougar.

I'm actually at one of the best retail positions. I've seen a lot worse. I have good co-workers for the most part. I just simply don't like the work is all. There is only so much "good" retail can get and to me even the best of the best is still trash. Might just smell a little better, but still...

Durring my college career I had three jobs.

First was in retail a supermarket deli. Luckily I live in upstate New York so rarely we have a really asshole ish customer but most people were awesome. The hours sucked and people would call off all the time which was lame as hell. Hours sucked and pay was good for retail but not much. Plus I was forced to try each product at least once and a confirmed carnivore who loves cheese That was great too.

Then I had a job as the wedding bar tender that was awesome. You work hard one day a week and have a 12 hour pay check plus epic tips if you suck up to the right people.

The third was a lab job. While it started out great it became mind numbing fast. Lots of labeling and storing without much research.

I worked at a local surf shop for a couple years. It wasn't that bad for me, the pay was pretty nice and the manager was really chill with scheduling and working out problems. Weirdest thing that ever happened was a guy trying to walk out with a longboard from the store, that we just put on display earlier that day, and claiming he brought it into the store with him and it was his.

I was a bus boy at an Italian Restaurant, I only made 4.23 an hour, but as a tipped position I usually got 10 - 11 dollars an hours.

Hours were long (4:30-11:30), and late since I had school. Overall was not a bad job at all. I learned a lot about the business, learned a lot about the food, and it was fun talking to random people. Yes there was the occasional ***** customer, but all in all most people were nice, to me. I was about to become a waiter until they found out I wasn't 18 =( then I couldn't because I have to serve alcohol.

However, I took off for spring football, but I am not planning to return. I have long hair now, I'd probably have to cut it to start working there again. Anyone have any ideas for a similarly paying job that doesn't care if I have long hair?

Work in a surf store if you have long hair. I only just got a job at one and my hair looks pretty much like Sawyer from Lost.

Also you Americans don't get paid very much. Poor guys.

In contrast if you show your pessimism (which I'm sure you do), you'll be stuck in the same position for years.
"Quickly" is a broad generalization. Your 20-year old District Manager friend was not only a dedicated worker but also, by my experience, in a tremendous position to succeed. The 2 retail places that I've worked at didn't promote in any such fashion.

Remember the blessing of your situation. I am a behavioral counselor in a secure, lock-down facility for high-risk juvenile males. It's a Bachelor's degree or higher position. You make more than a dollar more an hour than me.

I personally love it, but that's because I'm still in college and don't have as many bills to pay.

Converse is an awesome company, extremely fun to work for. If any of you are ever in Boston, stop by the flagship store so you can see what it's all about.

This was in '98. I pretty much told the manager that he could pay me the 1.25 extra and I would still deliver pizza (two jobs for the price of one) or I would quit and the guy he'd be left with would steal twice that much.

I've worked overnights for Target and Walmart at some point. You have your good days and bad. It's actually not bad for the short term. It's all pretty lax and you'll normally be with a bunch of kids around your own age. Assuming you're in that 18-25ish range or so. Walmart/Target hires damn near anyone, though. But this kind of job has the tendency to wear on a person rather quickly. There can really be some stressful days, especially with all the turnover at these places and work force shortages/freezes. Both of the stores I worked for were grossly under staffed and each place would try to shuffle too much work on their employees. After a few months, it was just hell to me. It's really not worth it, especially when you're in an under staffed locale. $9 an hour to do the work of 3-4 people? No thanks. I only lasted 8 months at Target before quitting and a year and some change before quitting Walmart. I really want to be done with the retail jobs. I also absolutely hate every warehouse job I've ever had as well. bleh. Some might as well have been sweat shops. Yay general labor jobs. :/

There was one funny moment out of all the shifts I had. Perhaps two.

The first was when a woman came in to look at some Vibram Five Fingers (toe shoes). It was obvious she had just been running as she was sweating and had some of her running clothing on. So after a brief chat I retrieved the shoes and she was having trouble getting them on. She was sitting on a bench. I leaned down to see how the fit was working out for her and she kept trying to get the shoes on while having her eyes closed with her head tilted back and sweat rolling down her head. Given that she was fairly attractive as well and making a slight moaning sound while trying to get the shoes on, from my perspective looking from the bottom up, it seriously seemed like I was watching a porno being filmed and I had the best seat in the house.

Another time I was helping a woman look for some specialty clothing for hiking purposes. I told her straight up "These are going to be the BREAST type of - I mean....best type of..." She kind of laughed. I'm just glad she took it in stride and didn't have a low top or something that day.

I've avoided retail luckily, I've worked construction remodeling walmarts, so I had to kinda do what Walmarts needs us to do since we're remodeling the insides. I've had a little taste of the retailing for walmart having to talk to customers while being there. Now I'm working at the media depart on campus in an office and do nothing. No weekends is good stuff.

Construction jobs are pretty legit if your a good worker and show up on time. I think my dad has been in drywall for 22 years and makes around 30 dollars an hour. When I started out I made around 9$ which was epic for when I was in high school.... and it was the least stressful job I have had.

Physical labor for me > Dealing with people.

I currently deliver pizzas and work 5 days a week, getting 20 hours a week. Tips really do make me most of my money though. On Friday-Sunday I usually get $45+ and I've gotten $75+ a few times. It's pretty easy, just have to be a good driver and know where your going.

I worked at Steve and Barry's when they were still up and running as a company. I quit right before they declared bankruptcy. But working retail was a pain in the ass and was never worth the money i got paid. I was hired to be a cashier, but I worked the floor and all I would do is fold clothes for like 5 hours straight. I didn't really have any asshole customers, the only one i can remember was on Black Friday but I was an ass right back so it all worked out.
