Vince Wilfork - 5 years - $40 Million - $8 Million/Season (2010)
Eric Weddle - 5 years - $40 Million - $8 Million/Season (2011)
Troy Polamalu - 4 years - $36.5 Million - $9.125 Million/Season (2011)

Ahmad Brooks - 6 years - $44.5 Million - $7.42 Million/Season (2012)

Brooks' deal isn't bigger any of those guys.

bhaarat has part of the answer down, but quality depth is also a factor. besides one can never have too many quality pass rushers.

When does free agency actually start? Saturday? Also, should we create a new free agency thread since this is a new year?

His contract is in their range... that's not a good allocation of funds.

All of those other deals were signed before this year when there was less money to throw around. I feel like I try to explain this to people every time someone signs a contract...

Dan Connor would look sexy playing the MIKE for Big Blue but I feel like Jerry is going to bring Goff back on a 1 year deal :-/

The Weddle deal is HIGH as is the Polamalu deal since he's one concussion away from retirement or worse.

The Brooks deal is a good one because there's no one else that would have been available who's as good or better. People will say Williams but he's going to get Julius Peppers type money and that would be far worse. Also, we havent seen the actual contract details yet for Brooks. A lot of times, contracts look better than what they actually are. And even if Brooks gets all that money, if he plays as good or better than he did in 2011, he'll easily be worth it. I'm happy with the re-signing of Brooks. Hopefully, Goldson is next followed by Alex Smith.

Concussion? Pfft....Polamalu is about 2 seasons away from not even having a place on the football field. He's never been great in outright coverage, but now he's abysmal. He's like a tiny, long-haired LB right now. If he's not "roaming" while the defense gets pressure for him, he's sucking.

Seriously, watch him the next time he has to cover a zone. I haven't seen someone more lost than late-career Adam Archuleta back there.

He will still make the Pro Bowl every year.

You know I agree with you to a point about Troy. But his game is based on film and guessing/jumping the route. When he was younger he could make a mistake and recover with his speed, kind of what Deion did. But prime time had abundance of speed even at like 35.

Troy's speed is diminishing quickly from all the hap hazard play, he needs to start playing the smart play and stop route guessing.

Against the Tebows he saw the TE crossing the field and Tebow rolling, so he jumped it, but they were ready for that and the TE instead went up field. After that play he quit trying to jump it and instead just played the TE over the top.

Still a good box/run stop safety, but needs to play coverage safety. Make the sure play, let Ryan Clark lay people out.

This is the nice way of saying "he's getting old and starting to suck."

Anymore, it seems like the ratio of plays made vs. plays given up is getting closer and closer to even for him.

So word is Peyton and Wayne are looking for a package deal. Bringing in Peyton could be more of a head ache than Favre was. He is going to demand a lot of things from a team.

But, if he's even 75% of his usual self, you're still instantly getting a top 10 QB in the league. For teams like Arizona and Miami who don't have much else otherwise, you may as well go for it.

75% Manning, with Wayne, Fitz, is pretty good for playoffs it would seem.

LMFAO. Why is he being compared to 2 safeties and a defensive tackle? Hell, his contract looks like a steal when you compare it to quarterbacks. Jesus.

Maurkice Pouncey was a first team all pro too, doesn't mean he's an elite center.

Weddle had a great season, he didn't get it off of reputation alone like Pouncey.

I'm more than happy with his deal. He's still young and has improved every season.

He got it partly on some reputation. Kam Chancellor deserved recognition over him and didn't get it, simply because half the voters probably aren't aware he exists. I'm not saying it's a bad deal, and Weddle's fine in the current depleted world of safeties, but I still wouldn't call him elite at this point.

That doesn't make sense. Weddle didn't have a reputation before this season. His extension was probably the most panned deal of the offseason last year.

I'm not saying Weddle is Jack Tatum or anything, but he's very very good.
