of course they can. i'll go back to my motto. draft good players.

if they draft good players there is no reason they can't be great.

Ben is only 30 years old so regardless of what they can retool I see no reason why he won't have them in the playoff hunt for the next 4 seasons and if they make it in they are as good as a bet as anyone to pull off a run. They might not be a dominant team, but I see no reason they won't be a 9-10 win team for the next 4 years and when Big Ben is your QB any playoff run could turn into a SB trip.

This draft is obviously important for them, but they'll be fine until the end of Ben's run.

But when you have guarenteed money tied up to players for the next few years, and some are players on the decline, how can you cope with that? They will need to resign some players soon, right? But they wouldnt be able to. And draft picks need to develop.

I understand the Big Ben can lead a team, its just difficult to understand how forfeiting money into the future helps when its to older players.

Because they have enough players on the team right now to vie for a playoff spot this year and beyond, and last I checked they weren't stripped of any draft picks. It's not like they traded away all their picks.

Remember how fast the Dolphins turned around? 1 win to 11 in a single off-season. There is no evidence that the Steelers have ever been terrible for a long period of time and I don't see how that would happen now with a HOF QB still in his prime.

Does that mean they will make the playoffs the next 4 years? Certainly not. But there is nothing proving the Steelers will be a bottom dweller so I can't see it happening.

They really don't have that much money tied up, and the money that they do have tied up is in guys that weren't going anywhere anyways... They put it all into Woodley, Timmons and Ben. Its not like they were throwing it all at Polamalu, Harrison, Hampton and Ward. People totally over reacted to the Steelers cap situation. They have so many people they can cut easily that aren't even great players, and they didn't put all of that guaranteed money into the pockets of their old players that won't be around much longer.

The only reason people even noticed was because of Wallace's free agency situation. The Steelers will probably be swimming in cash in a couple years when all of their older guys are retired and the new TV deal kicks in.

What kind of motto is this? Are there teams in this league that don't go by this motto? Do teams go into the draft saying "Hey, let's draft ****** players."

That was Matt Millen's philosophy.

Trading Tony Scheffler to the Lions was a terrific decision.

Josh McDaniels didn't draft guys like Tebow, Thomas, and others because he thought they were ****. He drafted them because he thought they were good. The fact that they turned out to be **** is just the problem with this motto. Every team wants to draft good players. But there just aren't enough good players to go around. That is why we have Rex Grossman Tarvaris Jackson, and Curtis Painter starting football games when they should be working at Foot Locker.

They'll rebuild sure. But it will be a 1 to 2 year rebuild. Max. Then they'll be the Steelers again. It's why they're such a great organization. When you know how to draft, you're always going to be a competitive team. The Steelers can draft with the best of them.
Maybe. The Steelers weren't very good in the eighties for quite some time. I think they missed the playoffs four straight years or something. That isn't that big of a gap I guess. But all franchises fall even after a long degree of success. The 49ers were good for like 16 straight years, but of course they fell too. Before Favre, the Packers hadn't been to the playoffs in about ten years.

McD had the same problem as Mangini. They tried to be Bill Belichick without actually being Bill Belichick. They tried to make "genius" moves despite the fact that they were not geniuses.

Dwight Freeney is apparently on the block. I hope we at least get a good pick in return for him. This is the worst offseason ever.

This made me lol:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...e-guy-whimper/

Quote:
The Jaguars announced Friday morning that they have re-signed offensive tackle Guy Whimper to an undisclosed contract extension.

Whimper, who turns 29 in May, was forced into the starting lineup for 15 games last season. He struggled noticeably and mightily to protect quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

The Jaguars will presumably hope that Whimper returns only as a backup in 2012. They need Eben Britton to get healthy.
Orlando ******* Pace would struggle mightily to protect Blaine Gabbert. An impenetrable forcefield would struggle to protect Blaine Gabbert.

Get it? Because Blaine Gabbert sucks?

In a few years you'll be looking at this year as the best offseason ever.

Guy Whimper has always been a little underrated. Great backup swing OT, and a solid RT if need be as a starter. I was actually hoping we could re-sign him back for cheap. Never understood why we cut him.

Because that type of guys you can always get cheaper in the draft. We have one in Beatty. But unfortunately next year, he might be starting again.

Whimper was dirt cheap to begin with though. And to be honest, I think he's better than Beatty. I think Beatty is awful. Whimper is passable.

Beatty is awful. And it doesn't look like the Giants will be bringing back McKenzie. And I don't know how much longer you trust Diehl at LT....

So Beatty will probably be starting soon.
