And he responds the way you expect him to, failing to break 500 yards in his first season in Tampa. And then, BOOM! back-to-back-to-back 1000-yard receiving seasons in his mid-thirties. And then, finally, he gets the nagging foot injury. And after that season, is the old guy who eventually can say he played for four teams the last four seasons and is old enough to be a rookie's father. Or Ricky Proehl, just quietly latching onto a team for a few years to catch two passes a game...forever.

"What's that gray thing in the corner locker?"

"Ricky."

"What's he play?"

"He's a receiver. He's as slow as the punter. He sneaks in on third downs and confuses the nickel back."

He played for 7 teams! Why is someone who's good enough to play until he's 38 not good enough for any one team to keep? Good teams! If I remember correctly, he caught passes in..two Super Bowls, wasn't it? For the Panthers, and then the Colts. ****, was he playing for the Rams when they went, too? anyways, you get my drift. It's weird.

I'd accept Amendola and one of the Rams' second rounders for Welker, but I wouldn't trade a second-round pick for Amendola and then rescind the tag on Welker like what was discussed earlier.

Have fun continuing to be awful Cleveland.

Quote:
Holmgren said Thursday that he trusts in the system the Browns have in place and believes McCoy has plenty of room for growth in that system, especially with a full offseason this year.
Quote:
Browns General Manager Tom Heckert is also talking up McCoy.

We do think Colt has a big ceiling,” Heckert said.
Blatant lies or extreme lack of sanity?

McCoy is maxed out as a guy who averages 5.0 YPA and should be nothing more than a backup. If that.

To be fair, I think that Colt McCoy is a great player for the system. I just think that the system is 15 years obsolete.

The game has passed Holmgren by.

Colt McCoy is not a great fit for any pro system because he's got arm strength only slightly better than Ken Dorsey and Kellen Moore. I'd put him about a 2 on the scale of 1-10. 3.5 is the "Kyle Orton Threshold" and is generally believed to be the requirement to run a functional pro offense at he most basic of levels.

My thinking was that he could have worked out in the early-to-mid-90s, when every WCO team became a contender and LBers ran 4.8 forty times.

Today, he's Ty Detmer. At best.

That. That is the problem with weak armed college QBs who get by in college spreads thanks to great accuracy.

You get to the pros and suddenly everyone on the defense is faster. The holes in coverage close much faster and if you don't have the zip to fire it in there, you're going to be reduced to throwing picks and check downs.

Too many people associate arm strength with the ability to chuck it deep, which is only an extremely minor part of it. It's that velocity on the short and intermediate stuff you need to succeed. That's what guys like Brady and Brees and Rodgers have. No one is going to confuse them with JaMarcus Russell in terms of launching the ball to the Mach 3 speeds, but they get plenty of zip (and have the requisite accuracy) on the short and intermediate throws to be effective.

And just having tons of arm strength doesn't cut it either, as we've seen with guys like Russell. He could throw through a brick wall...if he could hit the wall. He had no touch or accuracy.

You all may very well be right about McCoy, although I hope not. But Heckert is far from an idiot. He's turned the defense around in two seasons. What did you expect him to say?

"Well, we missed out on RG3 but we are going to do whatever we can to bring in anybody at the QB position because our current guy sucks nuts."

But it's an obvious lie to be like "Colt McCoy has a high ceiling and is a great fit for our system!"

That's why I laugh. McCoy's head is firmly against his ceiling.

I don't mind you laughing at the comment, I just don't know what else he's supposed to say there.

I suppose I just took exception to the "idiot" comment when Heckert is by far the most competent GM we've had in Cleveland since '99. I think the progress on defense speaks to that.

In fairness to McCoy he's started more games and had more success than the vast majority of third round QB's given that he has no threats at reciever. He's not a superstar but he's not a complete failure.

Justice and McGlynn not to bad they'll probably end up sticking.

Shipley will get cut, if not you guys are really really desperate.

The only reason he hasn't done anything is because he has zero versatility as he can't play OG and backups need to be able to play multiple spots anymore. He needs to win the starting C job for anyone to stick with him and I think he'll get a chance.

If he is given the chance, I think he'll be a decent starting C. Maybe not great, but decent.

In today's age of massive NTs across the league, you need to have a center capable of handling them.

For example, look at the Ravens/Pats playoff game. Matt Birk is a smart, heady center but leaves a bit to be desired athletically. Wilfork flat out dominated him and had a huge game that day.

That's why we're seeing more value placed on the position, and guys like Pouncey, Mangold and Mack are being drafted higher and higher.

With Manning FINALLY telling the Dolphins they are out of it, word is they are taking the money they would have spent on Manning and putting the full-court press on getting Flynn out of Seattle and trying to sign Mark Anderson
