It's been pretty well-established that most of his problems were in regards to picking up the zone-read offense after coming from Cincinnati's simplified systems. He'd be running an out route where Brady expected an in, which would lead to some head-scratching throws. I wouldn't call him a lock or even likely to make the team, but if Belichick thought he was done physically he wouldn't be getting that shot this year. Athletically he's way ahead of Deion Branch at this point.

The Patriots still haven't addressed the disaster that is their defense. I just don't understand that team.

Does Belichick even realize his defense is dogshit? I just can't wrap my mind around it.

I don't think he really cares at this point. He knows he can win despite it.

Hmm, like signing Eric Wright or those serviceable free safeties on the market?

If Michael Griffin wasn't tagged, I could would be pulling my hair out if we didn't at least try to give him a tryout.

But really, pass rushers and corners are extremely overpriced and safeties, especially free safeties, are non existent.

Ehhh, I find it unlikely that they get to the Superbowl again with the 31st ranked defense. Them or anyone.

I think the lockout contributed quite a bit to that since it gave an advantage to teams with coaching and QB consistency. (More than usual at least.)

So, your point is that there was NO ONE that could have been an upgrade that made monetary sense? I don't think that defense is in the position of passing on defensive upgrades in favor of saving a few million dollars. I mean, they keep throwing away money on terrible receivers. They could have easily bundled some of that money and upgraded just about any position on that D (excluding NT and ILB).

The Saints, Packers, and Patriots were the bottom three defenses in the NFL in 2011. That pretty much sums up how valuable building on defense is nowadays. The NFL's rule changes have basically rendered defenses completely ineffective against all but the most incompetent offenses. Besides, the defenses of the three teams mentioned seem worse than they are because of the significant amount of garbage time that occurs during their games. Drop 35 points on a team early, and go into prevent defense seems to be the strategy these days. All of the above teams allowed a ton of late touchdowns and extended drives with the game already well in hand.

I was hoping for Manny Lawson or Adam Carriker, but Carriker was overpaid and Belichick seemingly doesn't like Lawson. Kendall Langford would have been nice too. The Patriots were outbid for Red Bryant and Mark Anderson. Not much was available on the free agent market this year. Hopefully Luis Castillo is signed.

It is tough to understand a team that went to five superbowls in ten years. Yes this is one of the only times I will gloat publicly in this thread about my team haha.

BB is just a stubborn asshole. Every draft players we all drool over fall to us only for usto watch us trade down or pass. I mean he keeps winning with a **** defense, which means he just will continue the same way he has been.

One good year and you are out of hibernation. NFC championship appearences are awesome, but sucking for 10 plus years before that is pretty embarassing especially considering how you used to have an awesome franchise last millenium. Maybe if you didn't take Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers it would be a different story.

What does that have to do with Jvig43 telling Borat, a 49ers fan, that it is tough to understand a team that went to 5 Super Bowls in ten years? (losing two of them).

I don't know it just seems that what we have been doing for the last decade or so has been working pretty well, it might not make sense in FA but whatever. I'd rather win 3 Super Bowls and make it to 5 in a decade then have far and away your best season in 15 years end in losing the NFC championship game.

I think the point was that the Patriots have been successful for so long that criticizing Belichick's team-building strategies seems unreasonable as long as the team is still winning.
