Larry Foote? I guess Dick Butkus wasn't interested.

Sherman posted on his blog that he has signed an extension worth 4 years for a total of $57.4M with $40M guaranteed

Quote:
Seahawks signed LCB Richard Sherman to a four-year, $57.4 million contract extension through the 2018 season.

The deal includes a whopping $40 million guaranteed, blowing the $26 million guaranteed Aqib Talib got from the Broncos to set the new cornerback record out of the water. His $14.35 million annual average on the extension is also the new high-water mark among corners on multi-year deals, besting Brandon Carr's $10.02 million. Sherman has one year left on his rookie deal at $1.389 million for 2014 before the extension kicks in. He'll hit the open market as a 31-year-old. With Sherman's deal out of the way, the Browns and Cardinals can get to working on new deals for Joe Haden and Patrick Peterson, respectively.

How does Seattle's cap situation look like now? I know they have a bunch of guys ending their deal, but they also have to lock up Russell Wilson and others.

Wilson and Wagner. The rest are either already signed, or easily replaceable role players.

I think Okung would be a higher priority than Wagner.

We've found a way to replace Okung for about half of his injury riddled career already. He'll either get overpaid somewhere else or sign for cheap in Seattle.

If they choose to keep Lynch and Mebane, they probably won't be able to do much next offseason after extending Wilson and Wagner.

If they cut Lynch and/or Mebane, they'll be able to make pretty much any big move they want.

They have 30M in cap space right now, which I'd guess will go down to about 10M once W and W are signed. They can then save 5.5 by cutting Bane and 7.5 by cutting an old Lynch. The only real question mark is if Maxwell gets a huge offer from someone else (which is possible). They might lose him, but if they reallly want to keep him, they can make it work (although that would cost them Irvin or Wright down the road probably). I'm assuming Avril is gone and they draft a DE this year or Irvin moves back there for 2015 season.

The purge people are waiting for just isn't going to happen. It already did by losing Bryant, Clemons, Browner, and Thurmond.

Next offseason they MIGHT lose Maxwell.

The following offseason they MIGHT lose Wright, Irvin, and/or Okung.

They'd probably be able to keep two of those players. They just managed the cap brilliantly.

They obviously have to draft well to keep replenishing. They can't make James Carpenter and Chris Harper picks and continue to be the best team in the league.

But there isn't some horrible purge that is going to kill them.

The sad reality for the rest of the NFL is that for the next four years these guys are locks to be on the Seahawks:

Russell Wilson
Earl Thomas
Kam Chancellor
Richard Sherman
Percy Harvin
Michael Bennett
Max Unger
Bobby Wagner

They'd have to mess up pretty bad in the draft and FA and almost try to regress so badly in player development (think Baldwin) to not be a contender with that core, assuming they stay healthy.

This is an important draft though. They have to find a starter or two this year.

KJ Wright, Doug Baldwin, Byron Maxwell, Malcolm Smith and Cliff Avril next year aren't exactly throwaway players. I don't suspect you'll lose all of them, but it wouldn't surprise me to see all of them get $5 million APY on the open market.

Seattle was so good last year because of it's roster depth. For as good of a core as Wilson, Sherman, ETIII, and Wagner is, it's not like it's unrivaled across the league. Seattle's advantage came in the form of wave after wave of talented guys on rookie contracts.

We've already seen some attrition in the form of Tate, Thurmond, Browner, Giacomini, Rice, and Bryant. While I still think Seattle has a significant edge in roster talent, that will erode bit by bit every year like it has in SF and GB unless you can continue to draft abnormally well.

It is very important for Seattle to have a good draft this year and for Harvin to work out. Getting more contributions from last year's draft class would help too.

Do we have any reason to believe Carroll and Schneider will suddenly stop finding talent in the late rounds? I dint see a reason to. I mean just look at the attrition list. Thurmond and Browner have been replaced already by Maxwell and Lane. Giacomini is average at best. Rice was injured during the superbowl run. Bryant is a 1 dimensional player who was terrible before Carroll found a spot he could excel in that hid his weaknesses.

I don't expect it to fall off a cliff, but it's unrealistic to expect them to pick studs at the same clip that they have been. No team has ever really strung along 5-10 drafts like the Seahawks would have to do to keep this going. There are plenty of teams that have had 3-4 really hot drafts in a row, but the draft is inherently cyclical. Baalke looked like he was on fire for awhile, but he's cooled off significantly, BB stunk from 2006-2009, the Packers last few drafts haven't been that great.

You're still going to find some value players, but if you expect to replace every quality guy with a recent draft pick your roster will eventually thin out. Like gpngc alluded to, you're not going to stop being a contender any time soon, but in terms of being the clear cut #1 talent team, it'll be really hard to stay that way.

I think the Seahawks have a very unique way of finding talent. They are all about quantity. They go after as many players as they can with skill sets that fit the system and let them all compete. They constantly signing and releasing guys from the P.S. on a weekly basis. They have the most roster transactions of any team every year.

They sent out a brochure to agents showing that they give more preseason snaps to udfa's than any other team. This is why they strike gold so often and why I dont expect that to stop, they might not be able to find guys like Sherman all the time, but luckily for them he's already signed long term.

Sure. I'm praying for Richard Sherman right now not to ever get hurt.

$40 mil guaranteed is QB money. Hope he's prepared for the next up and coming corner in the league to declare he's better than Sherman because he got more INTs in a season.

40 mil guaranteed on a 4 year contract?

Whaaaaa?

I'm calling shenanigans. I bet 20 mil of it guarantees as a roster bonus after the first two years or something so they have some protection.

He's keeping the last year of his rookie deal so that bonus money is spread over 5 seasons.
