I'd move him back to situational pass rusher. Why not? He was good in that role.

He can't stop the run but he won't have to as a situational rusher. Let him play SAM in the base and let him play LEO in the nickel. That's what he was drafted for anyway.

Because he played well as a linebacker and the passenger rush was much better with Avril playing his role. When Clemons went down in 2012 and Irvin took over at LEO, he completely disappeared, there was no pass rush.

Why not use him in a similar role as Von Miller then? Play SAM in the under in the base D, and as a stand up edge rusher lining up wide in a nickel package?

Because they don't have to do that. Denver does because they don't have near the amount of quality LBs and DL. Seattle is a very lucky team. They get peak performance from their talented subs. Most teams don't get half of the production their depth gets them. Michael Bennett wasn't even technically a starter at times last year lol.

I do suspect they'll use him as a pass rusher more than they did last year because they have 3 other quality pro LBs (Wagner, Wright, Smith) and two young stud athlete LBs (KPL, Toomer). With Irvin that gives them 6 possible LBs. You don't need that many in today's league. I think they might move him back to DE, but it's a hard sell given how good he was at SLB last year. He made plays in coverage and spied Kaep. He's just too talented to not be on the field and the truth is that last year he was an inferior pass rusher to Clem/Bennett/Avril so they utilized him elsewhere. We'll see what happens this year.

If they moved him to DE and didn't teach him SLB, he would have played limited snaps. It was a good move for last year.

With Clemons gone, I think he'll rush the passer from the edge a lot. But they love a few young guys in Mawoya and Schofield too.

It's a great problem to have.

The more I think about it, the more I think the defense is going to be just as good as last year, which is just scary. The only regression I'd expect is from Sherman (people don't realize how incredibly he good he was last year - it's like a hitter hitting .390 - he HAS to regress - no way he makes that many plays in single coverage again this year), perhaps Maxwell (he was ridiculous too), and nickel without Thurmond. So I think they'll get beat a bit more, continue to have some bad stretches against the run, but other than that the pass rush will still be great and the LB play will be stellar and the safeties will be tremendous as usual.

When I read it, I thought passenger rush was some sort of football X/O technical term {LOL}.

Isn't the edge (elephant) linebacker in Seattle's defense meant to be a run stopper as opposed to a great pass rusher? Before Irvin it was K.J. Wright who played there, and he's a run defender and coverage guy.

KJ is the Sam(LOLB). He plays on the strong-side. The 'Leo' is basically the rush end or 'elephant' I guess in old school vernacular. Its the right DE to be put it plainly. Carroll defense is basically a 4-3, with 3-4 princples and alignments sprinkled in. The 'Leo' is like the ROLB in a 3-4.

Yeah. I don't like the name LEO because it has "LE" in it and it's technically simply a right end.

I also don't really like "elephant" because there's nothing elephant-like about being a dynamic, pass-rushing right end.

Glad we all agree now that Irvin isnt proven. Main thing about him last playoffs was he getting blasted by Pierre Thomas with one of the first plays of the game.

Irvin was a first round bust, but the Seahawks still built their defense into the best in the league. The Legion of Boom is like the secondary version of the 1960s Los Angeles Rams Fearsome Foursome defensive line (especially since both of those units have nicknames).

yes in the sense that they are a defensive group with a nickname! rawr

I'll take the 4 horsemen, nothing like a biblical nickname. 99% sure legion of boom is a DC comics reference.

When you type it as LEO, then you'd speak it conversationally as "L.E.O." as if they were initials. Since it's spoken as "leo," just type it in as "Leo" and that'll solve your...issue.

Originally, Elephant wasn't a position but a formation. When a base 3-4 DEF lined up in a 4-3, they were in their Elephant formation. Eventually, it developed into the position name for a 3-4 OLB who could move to 4-3 DE when the defense lined up that way, although there are other names like Buck, Jack, and Bomber Man. So when you look at it's origins, it makes sense. Regardless, while the positions may share some of the same characteristics, Elephant is a 3-4 term and is a linebacker, so calling a 4-3 DE as such would be a misnomer. Plus, Leo is so much sexier than "4-3 equivalent of an Elephant."

When I first heard the term "elephant" relating to the Hawks D I thought it was Red's position, ya know, cause he fat.

Bust?

Having 8 sacks as a rookie and in his first year ever at LB starting for one of the best defenses in history does not make him a bust lol.
