I don't think he deserves all the love he's getting either, my guess would be because he had a good combine but IDK I just don't see the big time talent others see in Cox. I'm a bigger fan of Worthy than I am Cox.

Depends on what you are asking for. Do you want a guy who sits in his stance and lets the play move to him (a la Spears) or do you prefer penetrating lineman who knife into the backfield (Ratliff)?
If you ask Cox to sit in his stance and basically set the edge then I agree it's a bad fit and a complete misuse of his ability. Have him penetrating and attacking and he'll be an absolute monster. He has an excellent first step for a big guy and can drive through contact. If Rob is looking to generate pressure from his down linemen then he has to target guys like Cox.
That's why I have such a poor opinion of Brockers for our team. Do I think Brockers will go top 10 (provided he shows up at his pro day)? Absolutely. Do I think Cox would out-perform him based how my assessment of what Rob wants from his lineman? ABSOLUTELY.

I want a guy that can both anchor when he needs to and also become a playmaker when he needs to, I don't want a one trick pony and while Cox does have a good first step he too often gets overwhelmed at the point of attack when he's asked to anchor. There are going to be times in our defense when he's going to have to take on double teams and hold his ground, and I don't see him being close to those other guys when asked to do that.
And his reputation as a backfield disruptor is a little overblown, Worthy has been much more disruptive throughout his career with more Sacks and TFLs than Cox, and Devon Still had a whopping 0.5 less sacks than Cox did this past season.
And Brockers didn't have the stats to match up with those guys, but I'm sure you've seen him play like 10 times this year because it seemed like LSU was on every week, and he really shows up on game film. Just because he didn't have the numbers this year doesn't mean he wasn't being disruptive, those 2 Ends Mingo and Montgomery should give him 10% of their contracts because Brockers was a huge reason why they had so much success getting to the QB.

-_- So Cox isn't deserving of the spot because he doesn't have the stats but Brockers is because he doesn't have the stats :D Excellent.
I was referring to what I watched on tape with Cox which has little to nothing to do with stats. As I said in my post if I want a guy that an anchor then I 100% agree that Brockers is ideal. He reminds me of a quicker Marcus Spears.
Do I want to add another "run-stuffing" 5 tech that is limited rushing the passer? Hell no. We need to be able to collapse the interior pocket and make the QB uncomfortable. You are indeed correct that Worthy is another candidate although I see him as a late 1st-early 2nd value as opposed to a top 20 value.
Watch some videos of Cox (NOT HIGHLIGHT TAPES) and it gives you the sense that while he isn't a perfect prospect he is very different from the typical Wade Phillips/Bill Parcells 5-tech.
Also completely off-topic I can't wait to see Lissemore fighting for more minutes.

Wait, I want to know how Brockers is superior to Cox in any way?
More potential? There physical skills are equal. Hell, I'd rather have Cox because he is faster.
Cox is 6'4'' 300 pounds with 34 1/2 inch arms and 10 3/8 inch hands. Brockers is 6'5'' 320 pound with 35 inch arms and 9 1/8 inch hands. Cox's 40 time and 10 yard split (probably the most important thing when evaluating DL) were both significantly better. Cox ran 4.79 and 1.63 compared to 5.36 and 1.77 for Brockers. Cox also had 30 reps on the bench, and whether the 19 number is false or not for Brockers, if he didn't choose to do it then he's obviously pretty damn weak for a 320 pound man. What kind of 320 pound physical specimen declines to bench 225 pounds...? Are you kidding me? He should be able to throw it up 30 times like it's a peace of paper. Gotta question that guys commitment and work ethic.
Not to mention, Brockers was probably playing alongside 6+ future NFL players on the LSU defense, while I bet there are is one or two guys tops that will even get invited to an NFL training camp from Mississippi State's defense.
Couple that with more experience and better production, and Cox is the better player. I don't get the Cox hate, especially from you D-Unit... but then again it's probably just D-Unit making an assumption with nothing to back it up because he has a crush on Brockers after a few flashy highlights.

I love Lissemore too. Should definitely bring a more active presence on the DL. The one thing I worry about is that Jerry thinks highly of Lissemore so he doesn't feel the need to address pass rushing DL early in the draft. I hope I am wrong about that.

Difference in our opinion of Brockers is you think he's just going to be a space eating 5Tech like Spears, I don't share that opinion. He's a much better athlete than you're giving him credit for. His fluidity, balance and agility are rare for a 6'6 322lb Tackle. I know he underwhelmed at the combine but that is the reason why you can't put too much stock into it, combine hype is the reason why teams make the mistake of drafting workout warriors like Poe instead of believing what their eyes tell them with game film like Brockers. And this is directed more towards CBCD because I've noticed you put a lot of stock into 40 times and combine results... On a football field, Brockers is a superior athlete to Poe. I could care less what their 40 times, 10 yard splits, Pro Agility, or L Drills are because those scenarios will never ever play out on an NFL field, especially for interior lineman. I'm more concerned with hand usage, ability to shed blocks and just overall football instincts.

Does anyone believe SJ and JG about the team drafting BPA? I think the team has done a pretty solid job of depth filling so far. They got their big fish, a safety with system familiarity, an insurance policy at IlB, and experience at guard. Other than the Livings deal, I give a thumbs up to everything done so far.
Everyone on this forum has jumped on the 5tech bandwagon and while I agree that someone who can pressure along the line would be nice idk if I see anyone who pops out as WOW we have to have him more then anyone else on the board.
Brockers is a guy who passes the eye test but isn't an elite athlete and Beat college lineman with size rather than technique. Will he potentially be a plus player who can occupy blockers ... Maybe. Do I think he will be someone who is game planned against and capable of blowing up double teams... No. Supporters argue that he is young and a starter on a top 3 NCAA defense. If developed properly will become elite with the addition of technique. My argument is that same defense has produced 3 top prospects in a similar mold who haven't lived up to the hype. LSU clearly scouts for the same attributes and their success may be systematic to an extent.
Cox is a guy who is gleaming after a great showing at the combine. He looks fast and explosive coming off the snap which his triangle numbers confirmed. On the downside he get washed out of running plays and better suited for one gap responsibility. He profiles better as a 3 tech in a 4-3 where he can attack while having help from a NT against the run.
Still even being considered at #14 makes me laugh.. He has all the ability in the world... Great balance, the explosion to shed blockers, and short area range to wrap up players in the backfield. On the flip side, he is slow at diagnosing plays, fatigued quickly and looks uninterested for big chunks of games. He is basically a one year wonder who waited for his senior year to show the talent recruiters knew he had coming out of HS. This defense doesnt need a guy who needs babysitting to light a fire in his ass.
The one guy I would feel most comfortable with is the guy scouts question the most, Dontari Poe. Poe is a rare athlete who has the size and speed to play anywhere on a 3-4 line. His technique lacks and he didn't dominate lesser competition. The thing that I like is he wants to be better, he wants to be great. His dedication shows in the weight room, with strong veteran leadership he WILL develop. Overachievers like Sean Lee and Ratliff could potentially crack the giants potential by teaching him in the film room.
Everyone listed could possibly be there at #14 and each one has has a downside. I don't think anyone is in the same league as JJ Watt or Ngata as elite players and probably won't be the best player on the board. The team has shown the ability to pluck plus 5 techs later in the draft. Guys like Raliff, Bowen, Canty, and Hatcher all drafted on the second day or later. I'm not saying the d-line shouldn't be addressed but if the team truely goes BPA, someone else will be available who is a better value.

Nice post and breakdown. Can't say that I really disagree anywhere badly enough to criticize anything. The fun part about all of this is that it's a mystery on what will happen. ...and we all get to choose sides first. :)

What are the odds Houston would trade us JJ Watt for our #1? I say slim, but its who we all want at DE, and they got a few holes with their FA losses. I am a total homer for him though, i know his uncle pretty well, and they really thought he was gonna be a Cowboy from what he says.

^ To the above: 0%. Disruptive 5-techs are very hard to find.
:) I agree 100% on us taking BPA I was simply comparing the top tier of 5-techs and whether I would want them at 14. They harped on it all off-season and admitted they would be filling all holes in free agency so that they would be free to draft value.
*excited*
The draft should be a lot of fun. Not knowing EXACTLY what we are going to do is a pleasant experience.

Did he really give me an infraction for calling you out? That was not a personal attack at all. I said you made an assumption with nothing to back it up as usual.. whatever man.
Anyway, the one thing that is concerning me that I forgot about is OLB depth. Sure we're fine right now with Ware, Spencer franchised and Butler, but both Spencer and Butler are in their last year of their deals, and I doubt we keep either of them. Butler is gonna go somewhere he can get a real shot at starting, and we probably won't pay Spencer the money he will command. God forbid DeMarcus gets hurt for a long period of time.. and he is turning 30.
That is still a sleeper position in the 1st. I could see this team still taking Melvin Ingram with the free agency we just had, or trying to trade back and take Curry/Mercilus in the late first.
As long as it isn't Upshaw who really is more of a 3rd round pick in quality but is pushed up because he went to 'Bama and there is nothing else at the position.

Totally on-board for Ingram. His tape is just as solid as his workouts. At this point I'm down to 3 positions for our pick.
1a. DeCastro
1b. Ingram
3. 5-tech

Round 1: Whitney Mercilus | OLB | Illinois
Now that Jerry and Co. have addressed the CB position in FA with bringing aboard Brandon Carr, the next move to improving our defense should be improving our pass rush. Enter Whitney Mercilus. The 2011 NCAA Sack leader terrorized offenses all season long racking up a whopping 16 Sacks, 22.5 TFLs, and 9 FFs on his way to earning All-American honors. I see Mercilus as a very similar player to former 49ers 1st Rounder Aldon Smith, both possess a rare combination of length, strength and speed and use all 3 when getting after the QB. A natural pass rusher with the arrow pointing up, Mercilus will be an immediate upgrade to Spencer on passing downs and will eventually take over as the successor.
Round 2: Billy Winn | DE | Boise St.
After improving our edge rush I now turn my attention to our inside pressure. Billy Winn is a relentless interior lineman with the athletic ability to create mismatches against Guards and Tackles in the passing game. The leader on Boise State’s defense, Winn played his best in the biggest games like Georgia on opening night. The 6-4 300 pounder is an ideal fit at 5-Tech for Rob’s unique 3-4 and gives him someone along the defensive line who can cause havoc in the backfield.
Round 3: Phil Blake | C | Baylor
With the signings of Mack and Livings I have a feeling the Cowboys are comfortable with the current group they have a Guard and will let those guys battle it our in TC. However, Center is a difference story. I do think Peter Konz will be in play for Dallas but if they decide to address the D early then they must do what it takes to make sure they land the other Center they’re fond of in Blake later on. He’s an immediate starter at Center who should bring some stability in the middle of a unit that has had some issues the past few seasons. Like the first 2 picks, Blake is a RKG and has been described as a hard worker by teammates and coaches alike, attributes that Jason Garrett covets.
Round 4: Leonard Johnson | CB | Iowa St.
Leonard Johnson has seen his stock fall over the past few weeks due to questions about his top end speed. But if he falls this far I’ll be happy to scoop him up because his tape says he deserves to go a round higher (check out his tape against Justin Blackmon and how he battled all game long). A feisty physical corner, Johnson is the kind of guy that Rob loves to have playing in the slot and helps continue to change the culture of our defense.
Round 5: Ryan Broyles | WR | Oklahoma
You knew there was going to be an injured player in here somewhere. One of the most prolific WRs in Oklahoma’s rich history, Broyles could be a steal for whoever decides to take a chance on him. He will probably have to redshirt as a rookie and let that leg heal, but when healthy he’s easily the best slot receiver in this draft and should have been a 2nd Round pick.
Round 6: Ron Brooks | CB | LSU
Criminally underrated but that’s alright with me, Brooks was the odd man out in LSU’s talented secondary but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a player. He’s a guy that’s willing to do the dirty work for you and plays hungry. Very, very good special teams player and is a guy you won’t have to worry much about if asked to play Corner in a pinch. Should be a definite depth upgrade over Alan Ball and Frank Walker. These are the kind of guys you want to fill your roster out with.
Round 7: Levy Adcock | OT | Oklahoma St.
http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images...jpg?1308628217
The team likes Parnell but it wouldn’t hurt to try and add some more Tackle depth, Adcock could be a serviceable backup at the next level.

Round 7: Levy Adcock | OT | Oklahoma St.

The team likes Parnell but it wouldn’t hurt to try and add some more Tackle depth, Adcock could be a serviceable backup at the next level.

not to be harsh but i hate the top of your draft, i've watched whitney mercilus play don't see a great pass rusher, of what i've seen of him he a strong and gets to the qb with effort but he doesnt have any moves to beat nfl tackles and he's not explosive at all, of the 4 games i saw most of his sacks have come from the qb just holding the ball too long, he would be a terrible pick at 14 imo i'd be shocked to see him in the top 25 he somebody teams would target late 1st or early n the 2nd could target, this guy is NOT aldon smith and billy winn is a straight reach in the second, i see him as a 3rd or 4th round guy
i see the premise of your draft, draft guys with production, but those to guys are not good value at 14 and 45 other than that i like picks 4, 5, 6

I think that we should do a joint mock draft for the first round once the remaining top free agents sign. (where Peyton lands is important) Find out how many people want to participate and draw straws for teams. Say ten of us are committed each person gets three teams to mock with a short explanation. We will automatically subtract the Colts and Skins since they are pretty much locks. I think it would be fun and something to pass time.

I really hope we are targeting Trumaine Johnson. He is basically Kirkpatick but can be had possibly 2 rounds later. He makes perfect sense. This year he could sit back as the #4 CB/back-up FS and adjust to the NFL game. If Jenkins leaves we plug him in as our #2 CB on the outside. Him and Carr on the outside would be two big, physical corners who are still athletic and can run, and we can keep Scandrick in the slot. If we manage to re-sign Jenkins, which should be our most important objective turning training camp and the season so we get him at a reasonable price, then Johnson can take over at free safety after Pool's contract is up and our coverage is instantly upgraded immensely.
I know this is obvious, just felt like posting an idea while i'm bored. Has anyone seen any connections with him and our team? Did we interview him at the combine?
